A domestic evening
The Fragile Price of a Brooklyn Charm
The penthouse was far too quiet, and for Steve Rogers, silence was never a good sign. Usually, the air was filled with the soft, melodic hum of Tony puttering around the kitchen or the rhythmic tapping of his small feet against the hardwood as he hurried to greet Steve at the door. But today, the silence was heavy, oppressive, and smelled faintly of ozone and old, cold tears.
Steve paced the length of the living room, his heavy boots thudding against the rug. His Brooklyn accent was thick and jagged as he muttered to himself, his alpha instincts clawing at the inside of his chest. "Tony? Sweetheart? Where’d ya hide yourself?"
He’d been looking for nearly an hour. He’d checked the bedroom, the bathroom, even the small closet where Tony kept his silk robes, but the omega was nowhere to be found. Steve’s heart hammered a frantic rhythm. He knew he’d done something wrong, but his thick, stubborn head was still trying to justify it.
Yesterday, they’d gone out to that fancy steakhouse in Midtown. The hostess, a lithe little omega with a floral scent, had been dragging her feet about their reservation. Steve, wanting to get his boy fed and seated, had leaned over the desk and turned on the charm—the old-school, sleazy Brooklyn charm. He’d winked, called her "doll," and let his scent flare just enough to make her blush and scramble for a table. To Steve, it was just business, a way to get what he wanted. But he’d felt Tony wither beside him, the omega’s scent turning sour and sharp with sudden, agonizing insecurity.
"I was just gettin' us a seat, Tony," Steve grumbled to the empty room, his guilt manifest as anger. "I didn't mean nothin' by it. She was just a means to an end."
He turned the corner toward the guest wing, the area Bucky usually occupied when he stayed over, and stopped dead. The scent of woodsmoke and gunpowder—Bucky’s alpha scent—was thick here, but it was laced with a protective, jagged edge. And beneath it, the unmistakable, heartbreaking sound of a muffled sob.
Steve pushed the door open, his frame filling the doorway. "Tony? You in here?"
The sight that met him made his blood run cold. Bucky was sitting on the edge of the guest bed, his metal arm wrapped firmly around a shivering, curled-up bundle of cashmere and lace. Tony was tucked into Bucky’s lap, his face buried in the crook of Bucky’s neck, his small hands clutching the alpha’s leather jacket like a lifeline.
Bucky looked up, and for the first time in seventy years, Steve felt a flicker of genuine fear at the expression on his best friend’s face. Bucky’s blue eyes were icy, his jaw set in a hard, uncompromising line. He looked less like a friend and more like the Winter Soldier standing guard over a precious, broken thing.
"Don't you come another step closer, Stevie," Bucky rasped, his voice a low, dangerous growl.
Steve froze, his hands held out in a placating gesture. "Buck, c'mon. I was lookin' for him all mornin'. Tony, baby, come to Alpha."
Tony didn't move. He only let out a fresh, broken whimper, burrowing deeper into Bucky’s chest. The sound hit Steve like a physical blow to the gut.
"He ain't comin' to you," Bucky said, his metal fingers stroking Tony’s hair with a tenderness that made Steve’s chest ache with jealousy and shame. "You really did it this time, ya big palooka. You went and broke the one thing you were supposed to protect."
"I didn't do nothin'!" Steve burst out, his accent slipping into a defensive snarl. "I was just talkin' to that girl at the restaurant! It didn't mean a lick! I was tryin' to get my omega a damn steak!"
"Is that what you call it?" Bucky’s voice was like a whip. "Flirtin' with some girl right in front of him? Lettin' her think she had a chance while your bonded omega was standin' right there feelin' like he wasn't enough? You’re a real piece of work, Rogers."
Steve flinched. He looked at the way Tony’s shoulders were shaking, the way the omega looked so small and discarded. "Tony... sweetheart, look at me. I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. I’m a dumb, thick-headed brute. I didn't think."
Tony finally lifted his head, his face a mess of red splotches and tear-streaks. His brown eyes, usually so full of adoration, were clouded with a deep, haunting hurt. "You... you liked her," he whispered, his voice tiny and fragile. "You were lookin' at her the way you look at me. Like I’m just... just one of many."
"No! Never!" Steve stepped forward, but Bucky’s metal arm shot out, a silent warning to stay back. Steve growled, his alpha dominance flaring, but he forced himself to subside. He couldn't fight Bucky, not while Tony was like this. "Tony, listen to me. She was nothin'. A bug on the windshield. You’re my world. You’re my prize. I’d trade a thousand of her for one of your smiles."
"Then why'd you do it?" Bucky demanded, his gaze unwavering. "Why'd you make him feel like he had to come cryin' to me because his own Alpha was too busy playin' the field for a better table?"
Steve slumped against the doorframe, his bravado finally crumbling. He looked at his boots, feeling every bit the reckless, selfish punk from the back alleys of Flatbush. "I’m a sleaze, Buck. I know I am. I got used to gettin' what I want by throwin' my weight around. I forgot that my boy is a sensitive thing. I forgot that he sees everythin' I do as the gospel."
He looked back at Tony, his eyes shimmering with his own unshed tears. "I fucked up, Tony. I’m a reckless, stupid alpha who don't deserve a sweet thing like you. I spent all mornin' lookin' for you 'cause the house felt like a tomb without you. I don't want no one else. I just want my good boy."
Tony sniffled, wiping his nose on the sleeve of his expensive sweater. He looked at Bucky, seeking permission, seeking guidance. Bucky sighed, his expression softening just a fraction, though he still kept a firm grip on Tony’s waist.
"He’s gotta earn it, doll," Bucky murmured to Tony, though his eyes were on Steve. "What are you gonna do to make it up to him, Stevie? Talk is cheap in Brooklyn. Show us what you're worth."
Steve didn't hesitate. He dropped to his knees right there in the doorway, a position of absolute humility that no one but Tony and Bucky would ever see him take. "I’ll do anythin'. I’ll throw away the phone, I’ll never go to a restaurant again, I’ll stay right here and scrub these floors until my hands bleed. Just let me hold him, Buck. Please."
Bucky watched him for a long moment, the silence stretching thin. Finally, he gave a slow, reluctant nod. He eased Tony off his lap, guiding the omega toward the door. "Go on, then. See if he means it."
Tony moved slowly, his steps hesitant until he reached Steve. He looked down at his Alpha, his lower lip trembling. Steve didn't wait; he reached out and gathered Tony into his lap, burying his face in Tony’s stomach, inhaling the scent of his omega like a drowning man gasping for air.
"I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry," Steve muffled into the cashmere. "I’m a dog, Tony. A stray dog that don't know how to act in a palace. Please don't be sad no more. It’s killin' me."
Tony’s hands found Steve’s hair, his fingers stroking the blonde strands with a slow, forgiving rhythm. "You promise? No more looking at other people like that? I’m your only one?"
Steve pulled back just enough to look Tony in the eye, his expression fierce and possessive. "You’re the only thing I see, Tony. Everythin' else is just background noise. I’m gonna spend the rest of the week provin' it to you. I’m gonna buy you everythin' in those catalogs, I’m gonna cook every meal, and I’m gonna keep you so close you’ll forget anyone else even exists."
Tony let out a long, shaky breath, the tension finally leaving his body. He slumped against Steve, his head finding its rightful place on Steve’s shoulder. "Okay, Alpha. I believe you."
Bucky stood up from the bed, stretching his arms over his head. The tension in the room had shifted from hostile to thick, cloying devotion. "Alright, enough of the waterworks. I’m starvin', and since Stevie here is a useless flirt, I guess we’re orderin' in."
"I’m not useless," Steve grunted, though there was no heat in it. He stood up, carrying Tony effortlessly, the omega’s legs wrapped around his waist. "And we ain't orderin' in. I’m makin' that pasta Tony likes. The one with the cream sauce."
"You better not burn it," Bucky warned, walking past them and ruffling Tony’s hair. "And Tony, if he acts up again, you come find me. I’ll show him how we handle bullies in the 107th."
Tony giggled—a small, watery sound that made Steve’s heart soar. "I will, Mr. Barnes. Thank you for looking after me."
"Anytime, doll," Bucky said with a wink.
The evening was a slow, domestic healing process. Steve was a whirlwind of attentive, overbearing energy. He didn't let Tony’s feet touch the floor for more than five minutes at a time. He sat Tony on the kitchen counter while he cooked, feeding him bits of cheese and bread, constantly leaning in to scent Tony’s neck and mutter sweet, possessive things in his ear.
"You’re my prize, Tony," Steve whispered, his breath hot against Tony’s skin. "My pretty, perfect little treasure. I’m gonna make sure you never have a reason to cry again. I’m gonna keep you so spoiled you won't even remember what a restaurant hostess looks like."
Tony leaned into the heat, his eyes half-closed. "I like it when you're like this, Steve. When you're all focused on me."
"I’m always focused on you, sweetheart," Steve promised. "I just got a loud way of showin' it sometimes."
After dinner—which Steve served while Tony sat in his lap, the alpha refuse to let him sit in a separate chair—the three of them migrated toward the massive master bedroom. The bed was a sprawling sea of high-thread-count sheets and heavy down comforters, a nest built for the comfort of a kept omega.
Bucky didn't even ask; he just followed them in, kicking off his boots and climbing onto one side of the bed. Steve settled into the middle, pulling Tony down into the space between them.
The weight of the two alphas was immense, a physical barrier against the rest of the world. Tony felt small, protected, and utterly cherished. He was tucked under Steve’s arm, his head on Steve’s chest, while Bucky’s heavy metal arm draped over both of them, his hand resting protectively on Tony’s hip.
"You okay now, doll?" Bucky asked, his voice a low rumble in the darkened room.
"I'm perfect," Tony whispered, his voice thick with sleepiness and contentment.
Steve squeezed him tighter, his nose buried in Tony’s hair. "He’s more than perfect. He’s mine. And I ain't ever forgettin' it again."
"You better not," Bucky muttered. "Or I’m takin' him to Brooklyn and you ain't never findin' us."
Steve let out a low, warning growl, but it was playful, a sign of his returning confidence. "Like you could keep him away from me. He loves his Alpha too much."
Tony smiled against Steve’s skin, his eyes fluttering shut. He listened to the steady, synchronized breathing of the two men who owned his heart and his life. The world outside the penthouse—the boardrooms, the cameras, the other omegas—it all felt like a distant, fading dream. Here, in the heat and the scent of sandalwood and gunpowder, Tony was exactly where he was meant to be.
"Goodnight, Alphas," Tony murmured.
"Night, sweetheart," Steve rumbled, pressing a final, lingering kiss to the top of Tony’s head.
"Sleep tight, doll," Bucky added.
As the city lights twinkled outside the floor-to-ceiling windows, the three of them drifted off into a deep, unshakable sleep. Steve held his prize close, his subconscious already planning a dozen different ways to spoil Tony the next day, ensuring that his omega would never doubt his place as the most important thing in Steve’s world. The Brooklyn boys had their treasure, and they were never, ever letting go.
