"Aoi Aoi" Is My Name!
The Weight of a Heartbeat in the Water
The bedroom was bathed in the pale, milky light of a Saturday morning, the kind of light that felt slow and unhurried. It pooled across the duvet, highlighting the tangled mess of ginger and purple hair against the white pillows. Aoi was the first to stir. She shifted slightly, a soft grunt escaping her lips as the weight of her eighth month made itself known. Her body felt like a vessel full of stones, heavy and anchored, yet her heart was light.
Beside her, Akane was still asleep, his glasses sitting on the nightstand next to a half-empty glass of water. Without the frames, his face looked younger, the sharp lines of his professional persona softened by the vulnerability of rest. Aoi reached out a hand, her fingers hovering just above his cheek before she decided to wake him in a much more traditional, affectionate way.
She leaned over, her belly pressing into the mattress as she pressed her lips to his.
Akane’s eyes fluttered open, blinking against the sudden intrusion of light and love. It took him only a fraction of a second to realize where he was and who was hovering over him. His arms wound around her waist instantly, pulling her down into the soft expanse of the bed. They didn't speak; words felt like an unnecessary interruption to the quiet gravity of the morning. Instead, they shared a long, slow makeout, their breaths mingling in the cool air of the room. It was a kiss that tasted of familiarity and the deep, abiding peace they had fought so hard to earn.
"Good morning, my beautiful time-thief," Akane whispered against her lips, his voice husky with sleep.
Aoi giggled, pulling back just enough to see the amber glow in his eyes. "Good morning, Akane-kun. Since it’s your day off, I was thinking... would you like to take a bath with me? My back is aching, and the warm water always makes Nekoyashiki calm down."
Akane’s smile faltered for a moment, replaced by a look of intense, protective worry. "A bath? Together? Aoi, are you sure? I mean, you’re so... you’re carrying so much right now. What if you slip? What if the water is too hot for the baby? What if I accidentally bump into you?"
Aoi placed a soothing hand over his mouth, her eyes sparkling with amusement. "Akane-kun, you’re doing it again. You’re worrying about the future instead of enjoying the now. I’m quite sturdy, I promise. And I miss being close to you without all these layers of cotton and wool between us."
Akane sighed, his shoulders relaxing as he leaned his forehead against hers. "It just feels like a crime to see you so vulnerable, Aoi. You’re like a sacred treasure. I feel like I should be standing guard outside the door rather than intruding on your space."
"It’s not an intrusion if I’m inviting you," she countered softly. She sat up, the duvet falling away to reveal the white nightgown that strained against her curves. "Besides, there’s something I’ve been wanting to show you. I think you’ve been a bit oblivious lately, honey."
Akane sat up as well, rubbing the back of his neck. "Oblivious? To what? I notice everything about you. I noticed you changed your shampoo two days ago. I noticed you’ve been craving pickled plums again."
"Silly Akane-kun," Aoi said, a mischievous glint in her eyes. "I’m talking about my body. I’ve actually been carrying very large ones since last month... maybe you could help me with them a bit in there? Please."
Akane blinked, his brain momentarily short-circuiting. "Huh...? But they looked kind of normal under those loose sweaters and the maternity smocks. Or, rather, compared to your big bump, everything else just seemed... proportionate?"
Aoi let out a playful huff, standing up and offering him her hand. "That’s because I’ve been wearing very supportive bras, Akane-kun. But today is a day for honesty. And for relief. Please, come with me."
The bathroom was already steaming by the time they entered, the scent of expensive bath salts—something with hints of yuzu and cedar—filling the air. Akane moved with practiced caution, testing the water temperature three times before he was satisfied it wouldn't harm his wife or daughter. He helped Aoi out of her nightgown, his movements reverent, almost ritualistic.
As the fabric pooled at her feet, Akane froze.
He had seen her pregnant body every day, of course. He had rubbed lotion into the silver-pink stretch marks on her belly and kissed the curve of her hips. But seeing her now, standing in the soft steam without the distraction of clothing, the reality hit him anew. Her breasts were indeed much larger, heavy and veined with blue, looking almost too heavy for her petite frame to support. They were a testament to the biological miracle occurring within her—a preparation for the life that would soon depend on her entirely.
"Aoi..." he breathed, his face heating up to a shade that rivaled his hair.
"See?" Aoi said, stepping into the oversized tub with his steadying hand on her elbow. She lowered herself into the water with a long, shaky sigh of relief. "The weight is so much, Akane-kun. Especially when I’m standing. It feels like I’m being pulled forward all the time."
Akane stripped quickly and joined her, settling behind her so that she could lean her back against his chest. The water rose around them, warm and buoyant. He wrapped his arms around her, his large hands naturally finding their place over her stomach, but Aoi reached down, guiding his hands upward.
"Here," she whispered. "They’re so sore. The skin feels so tight."
Akane hesitated for a heartbeat, his breath hitching. Even after all their years together, the sheer intimacy of her request made his heart race. He began to massage her gently, his touch light and cautious, as if she were made of the finest porcelain. He could feel the heat radiating from her skin, the density of the tissue, and the way she melted back against him at the contact.
"Is this okay?" he asked, his voice barely a murmur against the shell of her ear. "I don't want to hurt you."
"It’s perfect," Aoi sighed, her head falling back onto his shoulder. "You have such warm hands, Akane-kun. It’s like you’re taking the ache away just by touching me."
"I’d take every ache you have if I could," Akane said fiercely. He closed his eyes, focusing on the rhythm of her breathing. "I look at you and I see so much strength. It’s overwhelming. You’re literally building a human being, Aoi. You’re making a soul."
"We made her together," Aoi reminded him, turning her head slightly to kiss his jaw. "And she’s going to be so loved. Can you feel her moving? I think she likes the warm water too."
Akane shifted one hand back down to her belly, waiting. A moment later, a sharp, distinct thump pressed against his palm. He laughed, a short, breathless sound of pure wonder.
"She’s a little fighter, isn't she? Must take after her mother. You were always the strongest person I knew, even when you were pretending to be a delicate flower at Kamome."
Aoi smiled, a bit wistfully. "I wasn't pretending to be delicate, Akane-kun. I was just hiding. But I don't have to hide from you. Not anymore."
They sat in silence for a while, the only sound the soft sloshing of water and the distant chirping of birds outside the frosted bathroom window. The steam swirled around them, creating a private world where time didn't matter. There were no school wonders here, no curses, no boundaries to maintain. There was only a man, a woman, and the daughter they were waiting for.
"I showed them the sketch yesterday," Akane said suddenly, his voice low. "At the office. I think I told you Minamoto liked it, but I didn't tell you what he actually said."
"Oh? What did he say?"
"He said that I finally managed to capture the look in your eyes that I’ve been chasing for ten years. He said it looked like... peace." Akane tightened his hold on her. "I realized he was right. I spent so long trying to save you, Aoi. I forgot that the best way to save someone is just to love them until they feel safe enough to stay."
Aoi reached up, splashing a bit of warm water over her shoulders. "You did save me. You saved me from the silence I lived in. And now, our house is never going to be silent again, is it?"
"Never," Akane promised. "Between my bragging and Neko-chan’s crying, it’s going to be a madhouse. And I can't wait."
He continued to massage her, his movements becoming more confident as he felt the tension leave her body. Aoi’s skin was slick with the bath oils, and the warmth of the water made her feel supple and soft. He marveled at the changes in her—the way her body had expanded to accommodate their love. To him, she had never been more beautiful. Not as a schoolgirl, not as a bride, but now, as a mother.
"Akane-kun?" Aoi asked after a long silence.
"Yes, darling?"
"Do you think I’ll be a good mother? I worry sometimes... that I don't have that 'natural' instinct everyone talks about. What if I don't know what she needs?"
Akane turned her around in the tub, despite the logistical difficulty of her belly, so that he could look her in the eye. The water sloshed over the edges, but he didn't care. He took her face in his hands, his thumbs stroking her wet cheeks.
"Aoi, look at me. You are the most compassionate, observant person I have ever met. You spent years anticipating everyone’s needs at school just to make sure they were happy. Now, you get to do that for someone who will love you unconditionally in return. You don't need 'instinct.' You have love. And you have me. We’re a team, remember? If you don't know what she needs, we’ll figure it out together."
Aoi’s eyes filled with tears, which she quickly blinked away. "You always know exactly what to say. It’s almost unfair."
"It’s not a script, Aoi. It’s just the truth." He leaned in, kissing her forehead, then her nose, then finally her lips. The kiss was deep and salty, a seal on the promise he had just made.
As the water began to cool, Akane helped her out of the tub, wrapping her in a massive, fluffy towel that he had pre-warmed on the radiator. He dried her hair with a smaller towel, his touch meticulous and careful.
"There," he said, stepping back to admire his work. "My radiant wife."
Aoi looked down at herself, then back at him. "I feel so much better. Thank you, Akane-kun. Truly. I think my back might actually let me walk to the kitchen now."
"You aren't walking anywhere," Akane declared, scooping her up in his arms.
"Akane-kun! I’m too heavy for this!" she squealed, clutching his neck as he lifted her.
"Nonsense. I’ve carried the weight of the world’s time on my shoulders; a beautiful woman and a tiny daughter are nothing in comparison." He carried her back to the bedroom, laying her down on the freshly made bed.
He sat beside her, leaning over to press a kiss to the very top of her belly. "I love you both so much it scares me sometimes."
Aoi reached out, running her fingers through his damp hair. "Don't be scared. We’re right here. And we’re staying."
Akane nodded, his eyes shining behind his glasses. He lay down beside her, pulling the covers up over them both. The rest of the day stretched out before them—a day of quiet, a day of rest, a day of being just Akane and Aoi.
As they drifted into a mid-morning nap, the sunlight continued its slow journey across the floor. The house was quiet in that comfortable sort of way that only came after years of sharing the same space. It was a silence that was full of the future, a silence that held the promise of a heartbeat, and the enduring, unshakeable love of a man who had finally stopped the clock to live in the moment.
