Assassinating The Remaining Distance

The Geometry of Domestic Bliss

The afternoon sun over Setagaya was generous, casting a warm, honeyed glow over the sidewalk as Nagisa Shiota made his way home. It was barely noon—a rarity in his profession—but a scheduled half-day for teacher development had released him early into the bustling currents of the city. Being small in Tokyo was a unique experience; the world seemed to tower and rush, a sea of shoulders and briefcases that Nagisa navigated with the practiced grace of a shadow.

He moved through the crowd with a light step, his mind drifting between lesson plans for the coming week and the surreal reality of the keys jingling in his pocket. Just a few weeks ago, his life had been a series of quiet, solitary loops. Now, it was a vibrant, chaotic trajectory pointed straight toward a red-headed bureaucrat who seemed determined to reinvent the concept of "home."

As he passed a small, verdant park tucked between two high-rises, Nagisa slowed. On a bench shaded by a weeping willow, he spotted two familiar figures. Even from a distance, the stoic, focused silhouettes were unmistakable. Ryūnosuke Chiba was leaning in close, his long bangs obscuring his eyes as usual, but his posture was uncharacteristically tender. Beside him sat Rinka Hayami, her sharp gaze softened as she looked down at the gentle swell of her stomach. Chiba’s hand was resting protectively over hers, their fingers interlaced in a quiet, marksmanship-like precision of affection.

Nagisa paused, a bloom of warmth spreading through his chest. They looked happy. They looked settled. It was a glimpse into a future that felt less like a distant dream and more like an impending reality. His cheeks pinkened, a shy smile tugging at his lips as he turned away to give them their privacy.

*We’re all growing up,* he thought, his heart fluttering. *Even us.*

When he reached the stone wall of their new house, the silence of the neighborhood felt like a welcoming embrace. He turned the key in the lock, expecting the hollow stillness of an empty house, but as the door swung open, he was met with the unmistakable scent of expensive sandalwood and the faint hum of a refrigerator that was no longer empty.

Nagisa barely had time to kick off his shoes before he came face-to-chest with a solid wall of navy blue fabric. He gasped, looking up—and up—at Karma, who was standing in the foyer with a look of predatory triumph.

"Welcome home, Nagisa," Karma said, his voice a smooth, low vibration. In his hands, he held two folded pieces of fabric: one a vibrant, mischievous red, the other a soft, calming blue. They were aprons, complete with ruffled edges and tiny, embroidered icons—a strawberry for the red, and a small, stylized snake for the blue.

Nagisa blinked, his brain momentarily short-circuiting. "K-Karma-kun... what are these for? And why are you home? Don't you have a committee meeting about urban zoning?"

"Zoning is boring. Domesticity is much more entertaining," Karma replied, stepping into Nagisa’s personal space until their toes touched. "Besides, we’re officially homeowners now. We’re just gonna have to take cooking into our own hands in our own house. I can't have you surviving on convenience store onigiri and my spicy miso cravings forever."

Nagisa looked at the blue apron, then at Karma’s smug face. "Oh? That's alright. I've been cooking for myself beforehand, so I think I can manage."

"So you know how to make some good stuff, huh?" Karma’s grin widened, flashing a hint of his sharp canines.

Before Nagisa could respond, Karma’s hands shot out, catching Nagisa under the arms and hoisting him into the air as if he weighed no more than a bag of groceries. Nagisa let out a high-pitched squeak of surprise, his legs dangling as he was pulled flush against Karma’s chest.

"Karma! Put me down!"

"Wanna be my little wifey-boy?" Karma asked, his eyes gleaming with that specific brand of Akabane mischief that usually preceded a disaster or a confession.

Nagisa’s face turned a shade of red that rivaled Karma’s hair. "W... wifey?"

"Yep. You do the seasoning, I do the heavy lifting. It’s a perfect division of labor." Karma squeezed him slightly before setting him back down, though he didn't pull his hands away immediately.

"Um, okay...!" Nagisa stammered, his heart hammering against his ribs. "Let's just... let's head to the living room first and unwind. I need to get out of these clothes."

Karma’s eyebrows shot up. "Oh? Moving fast, Shiota-sensei? I like the initiative."

"I meant my work clothes, Karma! It’s hot outside!" Nagisa huffed, ducking under Karma’s arm and scurrying toward the living room.

A few minutes later, the house had settled into a comfortable, lazy rhythm. The air conditioner hummed a low, cool tune, and the sun was beginning its slow descent, casting long shadows across the hardwood floor. Karma had sprawled himself across the large, charcoal-gray sofa, the remote in one hand and a bag of spicy crackers in the other. A movie was playing on the wall-mounted TV—something involving explosions and fast cars that Karma wasn't actually watching.

Nagisa stood by the large window, his back turned to the sofa. He had shed his professional layers, leaving his blue vest and slacks in a neat pile by the door. Now, he stood in his preferred "at-home" attire: a soft, form-fitting white undershirt that clung to his slim torso and a pair of dark, incredibly short shorts that he usually only wore when he was sure no one was looking. To combat the chill of the AC, he had pulled on a pair of black thigh-high socks, the dark fabric contrasting sharply with the pale, creamy skin of his legs.

As he reached up to adjust the blinds, the hem of his shirt rode up, revealing the delicate curve of his waist. From the back, his silhouette was a study in soft lines and deceptive fragility. He looked smaller than he did in his suits—more compact, more reachable.

On the couch, Karma’s hand froze halfway to the cracker bag. His mercury-gold eyes narrowed, tracking the movement of Nagisa’s arms, the way the light caught the fine, pale down on his limbs. He had known Nagisa was petite. He had known Nagisa was "pretty." But seeing him like this, in their shared space, stripped of the armor of adulthood, sent a jolt of something primal and possessive through Karma’s veins.

The menace in Karma never truly rested; it only pivoted.

"Hey, Nagisa," Karma said, his voice deceptively casual.

Nagisa didn't turn around, his fingers busy with the blind cord. "Yes?"

Karma reached for the remote and slammed his thumb onto the volume button. The sound of a cinematic explosion roared through the room, the bass rattling the windowpanes.

Nagisa let out a startled squeak, his shoulders jumping as he whirled around, his eyes wide with alarm. "What are you doing?! You’ll wake the neighbors!"

"Just directing your attention here," Karma said, his voice dropping to a low, dangerous purr. He didn't move from his sprawled position, but his gaze was heavy, anchored to Nagisa’s form. "Come on, I wanna see something. Get over here."

Nagisa frowned, his hands settling on his hips—an unconscious habit he’d picked up from dealing with rebellious students. "Uh... alright. But turn that down."

He walked toward the sofa, his black thigh-highs swishing softly against the floor. As he came to a stop in front of Karma, he looked down at the taller man, his expression a mix of confusion and mild exasperation. "What is it? Did you find a scratch on the floor or something?"

Karma didn't answer with words. In a movement so fast it was almost a blur, his hands shot forward. Nagisa braced himself for a prank, perhaps a poke to the ribs or a sudden pull into a headlock, but Karma’s hands landed lower.

His large, warm palms slammed lightly onto Nagisa’s hips, the action seeming forceful for a split second before the pressure changed. Instead of pushing or pulling, Karma’s fingers curled, his palms sinking into the soft, surprisingly ample flesh of Nagisa’s hips.

Nagisa’s breath hitched, his hands flying up to rest on Karma’s shoulders for balance. "K-Karma-kun..."

Karma didn't pull away. Instead, he leaned forward, his face inches from Nagisa’s stomach, a look of pure, idiotic bliss washing over his features. He squeezed, his thumbs tracing the curve of Nagisa’s pelvic bone through the thin fabric of the shorts.

"I thought it was just the pockets of those work pants," Karma murmured, his voice muffled by Nagisa’s proximity. He squeezed again, his eyes half-lidded as he marveled at the way Nagisa’s form gave way under his touch. "My little shortstack really does have the heaven hips..."

Nagisa’s entire face felt like it was on fire. He could feel the heat of Karma’s breath through his shirt, the solid weight of those hands claiming the widest part of his body. It was an intimacy that felt both terrifying and profoundly right.

"That's all you gathered?!" Nagisa squealed, his voice cracking. "You blast the TV and scare me half to death just to... to grope me?"

"It’s not groping, it’s an architectural survey," Karma countered, his grin returning in full force. He looked up, his eyes dancing with mischief. "I’m the homeowner, Nagisa. I have to make sure the foundations are solid. And I have to say, the structural integrity of these hips is top-tier."

Nagisa tried to pull back, but Karma’s grip was firm, his fingers digging in just enough to keep him anchored. "You’re a lecher, Karma Akabane. A high-ranking government lecher."

"And you’re a teacher who wears thigh-highs in private. I think we’re even." Karma’s expression softened, the teasing edge giving way to something more grounded. He pulled Nagisa closer, resting his forehead against the smaller man’s chest. "I wasn't kidding about the 'wifey' thing, you know. Not the gender part, obviously, but the... the belonging part."

Nagisa’s indignation deflated instantly. He let his fingers slide into Karma’s vibrant red hair, stroking the soft strands at the nape of his neck. The height difference was so pronounced that even with Nagisa standing and Karma sitting, they were nearly eye-to-eye.

"I know," Nagisa whispered. "I belong here. I think I’ve belonged here for a long time."

Karma looked up, his hands still resting on Nagisa’s hips, his thumbs tracing slow, rhythmic circles. "Good. Because I’m not letting you go back to that apartment. I’ve already contacted the movers to bring the rest of your stuff tomorrow. I told them you were moving in with a very important official who requires constant supervision."

Nagisa rolled his eyes. "You’re going to be the death of my reputation."

"Your reputation is safe with me. But your hips? Those are mine." Karma stood up, his 6'4 frame suddenly towering over Nagisa, casting a long, protective shadow. He didn't let go, his hands sliding from Nagisa’s hips to wrap around his waist, pulling him flush against the navy suit.

Nagisa looked up, his neck craning to meet Karma’s gaze. "So... about those aprons?"

"Ah, right. Dinner." Karma leaned down, his nose brushing against Nagisa’s. "I was thinking we could start with something simple. But first..."

"First?"

Karma didn't answer. He simply leaned down and captured Nagisa’s lips in a kiss that was anything but ordinary. It was a kiss that tasted of spicy crackers and long-awaited promises, a kiss that solidified the fact that the house was no longer just a building.

As they eventually pulled apart, Nagisa was breathless, his hands clutching Karma’s lapels for support. Karma looked down at him, his smirk softened by a genuine, rare warmth.

"Go put on the blue one," Karma said, patting Nagisa’s hip one last time. "I want to see if the ruffles match your eyes."

"You’re ridiculous," Nagisa said, but he was already heading toward the kitchen, his heart light and his steps sure.

As he tied the strings of the blue apron over his undershirt and shorts, Nagisa looked at his reflection in the polished surface of the refrigerator. He looked small, yes. He looked "pretty," certainly. But he also looked like a man who had finally found his center of gravity.

In the living room, Karma was turning down the TV, his humming a low, contented sound that filled the house. Nagisa picked up a knife and a cutting board, the familiar weight of the tools grounding him.

"Karma-kun!" he called out. "If you’re going to help, you need to wash your hands! And don't you dare put wasabi in the salad!"

"No promises, Nagisa! No promises!"

Nagisa smiled, the sound of Karma’s laughter echoing through the halls of their new home. It wasn't the quiet, ordinary life he had once imagined for himself. It was loud, it was messy, and it involved a 6'4 bureaucrat with a hip obsession.

But as Nagisa started to chop the vegetables, he realized he wouldn't trade it for all the quiet in the world. He had spent his life being underestimated, but here, in this kitchen, with this man, he was exactly who he was meant to be.

He was home. And for Nagisa Shiota, that was the greatest assassination of expectations he had ever achieved.
