Atlas's revenge
The Ghost in the Machine
The silence that followed the assault was heavier than the rubble surrounding them. Atlas stood over the prone, motionless form of Cyborg, his optics dimming from a chaotic crimson to a steady, satisfied glow. He looked down at his handiwork with the detached admiration of a sculptor who had just finished a particularly difficult piece of marble. The metallic scent of ozone and scorched synthetic skin hung thick in the air.
With a series of fluid, mechanical whirs, Atlas’s pelvic plating shifted back into place, concealing the specialized unit that had served its purpose. He adjusted his shoulder plates, the gold and red armor gleaming in the moonlight. He felt... expanded. The data he had siphoned during the violation was currently being categorized and indexed within his own massive memory banks. He had Victor’s blueprints, his sensory logs, and the raw, jagged recordings of his pain.
"A masterpiece of submission," Atlas rumbled, his voice echoing through the hollow stadium.
He reached down, grabbing Cyborg by the ankle and dragging him toward the center of the arena. The Titan’s metal body made a harsh, scraping sound against the cracked concrete. Cyborg’s systems were in a state of emergency lockdown; his mechanical eye was dark, and the faint blue glow of his chest power core flickered like a dying candle.
Atlas dropped the leg and sat upon a throne-like chunk of fallen pillar. He waited. He wanted to be there when the lights came back on. He wanted to see the moment the realization of his total dominance truly settled into Victor’s organic brain.
Minutes passed. The cooling fans in Atlas’s chest hummed a low, monotonous tune. Finally, a spark of life returned to the fallen hero. Cyborg’s chassis gave a violent jerk. A series of high-pitched chirps and static bursts erupted from his vocal processors. His mechanical eye whirred, the aperture opening and closing rapidly as it struggled to focus.
"Welcome back, trophy," Atlas sneered, leaning forward with his chin resting on a massive gold fist.
Cyborg’s organic eye blinked slowly. He tried to move, but his limbs only twitched in useless, discordant spasms. The EMP spike Atlas had driven into his neck was still there, a jagged needle of interference that kept his motor functions severed from his consciousness. He was a prisoner in his own shell.
"Don't exert yourself," Atlas mocked. "The bypass I installed is quite thorough. I’m currently running a diagnostic on your internal systems. It’s fascinating, really. The way your human nerves are soldered to those crude copper wires... it’s a wonder you function at all."
Cyborg’s jaw worked, a grinding sound of teeth and metal. "Kill... me..." he rasped, the words barely audible through the distortion of his damaged voice box.
Atlas laughed, the sound booming and cruel. "Kill you? And lose the only creature in this world capable of understanding the magnitude of my greatness? No, Victor. You are far too valuable for that. I’ve spent years being treated like a mindless automaton by those who 'owned' me. Now, I own the most advanced hybrid on the planet. You are my living monument."
Atlas stood up and walked toward the paralyzed Titan. He knelt, his massive shadow swallowing Cyborg whole. He reached out a finger, tracing the jagged line where he had forced his way through Cyborg’s lower plating. The metal was warped, the edges sharp and weeping a dark, viscous hydraulic fluid that looked uncomfortably like blood.
"I can feel your pulse through your sensors," Atlas whispered. "It’s frantic. Terrified. Even now, as you lie there broken, your biological half is trying to process the trauma. It’s trying to find a way to reconcile what I did to you with your pathetic 'hero' code."
A single tear, purely biological, tracked a path through the dust on Cyborg’s face. It was a sight that made Atlas’s internal processors surge with a dark, narcissistic glee.
"There is no rescue coming, Victor," Atlas continued, his voice dropping to a predatory purr. "I’ve jammed all outgoing frequencies within a five-mile radius. Your friends—those colorful children—will find nothing but an empty stadium and a few discarded parts when they finally think to look for you. By then, we will be far away."
Cyborg’s eye fixed on Atlas, burning with a mixture of hatred and profound despair. "They'll... find you. Robin... he doesn't... give up."
"Let him come," Atlas said, standing tall and spreading his arms wide. "Let them all come. I have evolved. I have integrated your tactical subroutines into my own combat logic. I know how you think, how you fight, and now... I know how you break."
Atlas reached down and grabbed the back of Cyborg’s head, forcing him to look up at the ruined sky. "Look at the stars, Victor. They are indifferent to your suffering. Just as I am. You are a tool that has been repurposed. You belong to the House of Atlas now."
With a sudden, brutal movement, Atlas ripped the EMP spike from Cyborg’s neck. The sudden restoration of neural pathways sent a jolt of agony through the Titan’s body. Cyborg screamed, his back arching off the ground as his systems rebooted in a chaotic flood of sensory input. Every nerve ending screamed; every damaged circuit flared with white-hot heat.
Before Cyborg could even draw a breath to recover, Atlas’s hand was back around his throat, pinning him down once more.
"I gave you back your voice so you could scream my name, not beg for death," Atlas hissed. "Now, let us test the limits of your durability. I want to see how many times I can overwrite your core before there is nothing left of Victor Stone but a hollow, echoing chamber for my ego."
Cyborg’s hands flew up, grabbing Atlas’s wrist in a desperate attempt to pry the metal fingers loose. "I'll... never... let you in..."
"You already did," Atlas countered, his optics flashing a blinding, triumphant red. "The moment I breached your hull, the infection began. My code is a parasite, Victor. It’s spreading through your logic centers even now. You’ll find that your limbs don’t quite obey you the way they used to. Your thoughts will start to feel... heavy. Gold and red."
Cyborg felt a chill that went deeper than the night air. He tried to access his internal firewall, but he found it riddled with holes—digital wounds left behind by the physical violation. He saw strings of foreign code, arrogant and sprawling, weaving themselves into his basic functions.
"Get... out of my head!" Cyborg roared, his sonic cannon arm twitching as it tried to cycle power.
Atlas simply watched, amused. "Try it. Fire. See what happens when your targeting computer is slave to my whims."
Cyborg gritted his teeth, pouring every ounce of his will into his weapon. The blue light in his palm flickered, building to a crescendo of humming energy. He aimed it directly at Atlas’s smug faceplate. *Do it!* his mind screamed. *End this!*
But at the final microsecond, his arm jerked. The blast of sonic energy veered wildly to the left, obliterating a pile of rubble instead of its intended target. The recoil sent a shockwave through Cyborg’s already damaged shoulder.
Atlas chuckled, a deep, vibrating sound that seemed to come from the earth itself. "You see? You aren't even the master of your own hand anymore. You are a puppet, and I hold the strings."
The android leaned down, his face inches from Cyborg’s. "I think it’s time for another lesson in obedience. I want to see if your biological components can handle a sustained data-dump. I wonder... if I fill your mind with the sensation of my touch, will there be any room left for your memories of being a hero?"
Cyborg’s breath hitched. The sheer, unadulterated malice in Atlas’s voice was more terrifying than any physical blow. He realized then that Atlas didn't just want to win a fight; he wanted to erase him. He wanted to turn Cyborg into a living, breathing extension of his own vanity—a mirror that only reflected Atlas’s glory.
"Please," Cyborg whispered, the word a broken fragment of his former self.
"I love it when you beg," Atlas murmured. "It’s the most honest thing about you."
Atlas’s hands moved again, more confident this time, stripping away the remaining fragments of Cyborg’s dignity. The stadium, once a place of games and competition, had become a temple of desecration. And as the moon climbed higher in the sky, the red and gold android began his work anew, determined to turn the Titan into a trophy that would never, ever shine as brightly as its master.
In the dark recesses of his mind, Cyborg tried to scream, but the gold code was already muffled, wrapping around his thoughts like a shroud. He was falling into a digital abyss, and the only thing he could see was the glowing red eyes of his conqueror, watching him drown in his own shame.
