Chaotic Company Dinner

The Ghost in the Machine

The morning after the SMTOWN afterparty usually felt like a collective hangover for the entire industry. The Seoul sun rose with an unforgiving brightness, glinting off the glass towers of Cheongdam-dong, indifferent to the bruised egos and parched throats of the idols within. But for the members of Super Junior, the air in their dorm was thicker than usual, heavy with a confusion that even the strongest coffee couldn't wash away.

Heechul sat at the kitchen island, scrolling through his phone with a clinical intensity. "Nothing," he muttered, tossing the device onto the marble surface. "Not a single leaked photo. Not a blind item. Not even a 'witness account' on a forum. The cleanup on this is terrifyingly efficient."

Siwon leaned against the refrigerator, his arms crossed over his chest. He hadn't slept. "That’s because it wasn't a PR team doing the cleanup, Heechul. It was the Chairman’s personal security. I saw them taking phones from the junior staff before we even left the building."

"It’s overkill for a cut hand," Shindong added, poking at a bowl of cereal he wasn't actually eating. "I mean, we’ve had members in car accidents, members in lawsuits, members... well, being us. The Chairman usually sends a vice president or a senior manager. He doesn't personally carry us to the car like we’re made of porcelain."

The door to the dorm clicked open, and the room went silent.

Leeteuk walked in, his gait slow and a bit stiff. His left hand was heavily bandaged, the white gauze stark against his pale skin. Behind him, looking remarkably refreshed despite the night’s events, was the Chairman’s head secretary, Mr. Kang.

"Hyung!" Donghae scrambled up from the sofa, nearly tripping over a discarded cushion. "Are you okay? Does it hurt? Why didn't you call us?"

Leeteuk offered a small, tired smile—the kind that usually signaled he was about to lie for the sake of everyone’s peace of mind. "I’m fine, Hae. Just a few stitches. The alcohol made it look worse than it was."

"A few?" Kyuhyun remarked, eyeing the thickness of the bandage. "That looks like a shark bite, not a steak knife. And since when does the Chairman stay at the hospital until four in the morning for a 'minor' injury?"

Leeteuk’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second. He glanced at Mr. Kang, who remained a silent, stoic sentinel by the door. "He was just... concerned about the comeback schedule. You know how he is about the brand."

Heechul stood up, his eyes narrowing. He walked over to Leeteuk, invading his personal space in the way only a friend of twenty years could. He looked at the bandage, then at the exhaustion etched into Leeteuk’s features, and finally at the quiet intensity in his leader’s eyes.

"You’re a terrible liar today, Jungsoo," Heechul whispered, loud enough for only the two of them to hear. "Your ears are red. What happened in that hospital room?"

Leeteuk didn't answer. He couldn't. His mind was still a chaotic loop of the Chairman’s voice—*his father’s voice*—telling him he was the son of his heart. The weight of that revelation was a physical pressure in his chest, making it hard to breathe, let alone maintain the facade of the 'National Leader.'

"Mr. Park needs to rest," Mr. Kang intervened, stepping forward with practiced grace. "The Chairman has cleared his schedule for the next three days. No practice, no filming, no meetings. If any of you have questions, you may direct them to the management office."

"Three days?" Eunhyuk gasped. "We have the Japanese fan-meet rehearsals! He never misses those!"

"He is missing them now," Mr. Kang said, his tone final. He turned to Leeteuk and bowed deeply—a gesture usually reserved for the highest-ranking executives. "I will be outside if you need anything, sir."

The 'sir' hung in the air like a live wire. The members exchanged glances, the gears of suspicion turning rapidly. As the door closed behind the secretary, the interrogation began in earnest.

"Sir?" Ryewook squeezed out, his voice high-pitched. "Since when does the Chairman’s right-hand man call you 'sir' like you’re the heir to a conglomerate?"

Leeteuk sat down heavily on the sofa, his uninjured hand rubbing his face. "He’s just being polite because of the accident. Look, can we just drop it? I have a headache that feels like a SHINee choreography, and I just want to sleep."

While the Super Junior dorm was a pressure cooker of unanswered questions, the atmosphere at the SM headquarters was equally strained.

Taeyeon walked through the glass-walled corridors of the third floor, her eyes hidden behind oversized sunglasses. She had a recording session for a solo OST, but her mind was miles away, anchored in a sterile hospital room where she had overheard a secret that could dismantle the hierarchy of the entire company.

She stopped by the vending machine, staring blankly at the rows of vitamin drinks.

"You look like you’ve seen a ghost," a voice said from behind her.

Taeyeon didn't need to turn around to recognize the calm, melodic tone of BoA. "Maybe I did, Unnie. Or maybe I just saw the man behind the curtain."

BoA stepped up beside her, punching in a code for a black coffee. "The rumors are already starting. The staff are whispering about the Chairman’s 'meltdown' at the dinner. They’re saying Leeteuk has some kind of blackmail on him. Or that they’re secretly partners in a new subsidiary."

Taeyeon let out a hollow laugh. "Blackmail? Jungsoo wouldn't know how to blackmail a fly. He’d probably apologize to the fly for catching it."

"I know that. You know that," BoA said, her voice dropping to a low murmur. "But the world doesn't. People hate a vacuum, Taeyeon. They’ll fill the silence with the ugliest things they can imagine. If the Chairman keeps acting this way—so protective, so... parental—it’s going to make Jungsoo a target."

Taeyeon finally turned, her sunglasses slipping down her nose. "He’s already a target. He’s been a target since the day he debuted. But this... this is different. If people find out they’re related, they’ll say his entire career was handed to him. They’ll forget the years he spent starving in basement practice rooms. They’ll forget the way he held that group together when everyone else wanted to quit."

BoA looked at her curiously. "You sound like you’ve already accepted it as fact."

Taeyeon stiffened. "I’m just saying... the way the Chairman looked at him... it wasn't business."

"No," BoA agreed softly. "It wasn't. But be careful, Taeyeon. You’ve worked too hard to get caught in the blast radius of someone else’s secret. Even if that someone is him."

Taeyeon watched BoA walk away, the veteran’s words ringing in her ears. *Blast radius.* She knew all about those. She had been caught in them before, standing too close to the flame of Park Jungsoo’s life until she was nearly burned to a cinder.

She pulled out her phone and opened her messages. She had started a dozen texts to him and deleted them all.

*Are you okay?* — Too simple. *I heard everything.* — Too dangerous. *I’m sorry I didn't come in.* — Too honest.

In the end, she sent nothing. She couldn't be the one to break the silence. Not yet.

Back at the dorm, the members had finally retreated to their own rooms, leaving Leeteuk alone in the living room. Or so he thought.

"They’re gone, Jungsoo. You can stop holding your breath."

Leeteuk jumped, his heart hammering against his ribs. Heechul was sitting in the shadows of the balcony doorway, a glass of water in his hand.

"I thought you went to sleep," Leeteuk said, his voice raspy.

"I don't sleep when my best friend looks like he’s about to have a nervous breakdown," Heechul said, stepping into the light. He sat on the coffee table directly in front of Leeteuk. "The Chairman didn't just scold us last night. He looked at us like we were insects for letting you get hurt. And then he took you away like you belonged to him."

Leeteuk looked down at his bandaged hand. "He was just emotional, Heechul. He’s getting older. He’s getting sentimental."

"Don't give me that 'Teacher' crap," Heechul snapped, his frustration boiling over. "I’ve seen him with Kangta. I’ve seen him with the TVXQ kids. He likes them, sure. He respects them. But he doesn't look like he’s lost his own soul when they get a scratch. What is he to you?"

Leeteuk felt a lump form in his throat. He wanted to tell him. He wanted to scream it from the rooftop of the building—that he wasn't alone, that he had someone who actually claimed him. But he saw the Chairman’s face, the fear of the world 'tearing him apart.'

"He’s the man who gave me a life when I had nothing," Leeteuk said, his voice trembling. "That’s all."

Heechul stared at him for a long time, his sharp eyes searching Leeteuk’s face. Slowly, the anger faded, replaced by a profound, heartbreaking pity. He reached out and patted Leeteuk’s knee.

"Okay," Heechul said quietly. "If that’s the story we’re sticking to, then okay. But if the weight gets too heavy, you remember that you have ten other idiots in this house who would fight the Chairman himself for you. You don't have to carry his secrets just because he gave you a career."

Heechul stood up and left, leaving Leeteuk in a silence that felt louder than any concert crowd.

Leeteuk leaned back, closing his eyes. He remembered the hospital room, the way Soo Man’s hand had felt on his head. *Son.* The word was a melody and a curse all at once. He had spent his life being the 'Special Leader,' the shield for his members, the bridge for his company. He was a man of a thousand roles, but he had never been allowed to be just a child.

His phone buzzed on the sofa. It was an unknown number, but he recognized the pattern of the digits. It was the Chairman’s private line—the one he only used for emergencies.

"Yes?" Leeteuk answered, his heart racing.

"Are you resting?" Soo Man’s voice was back to its professional, clipped tone, but there was an underlying tremor of anxiety.

"I am. The members are... they’re worried, but they’re giving me space."

"Good. I’ve sent a chef to the dorm. He’ll arrive in an hour to prepare something for your recovery. Eat everything. Don't argue."

Leeteuk smiled despite himself. "A chef? Chairman, the members will think I’ve been promoted to CEO."

"Let them think what they want," Soo Man said. There was a pause, a long stretch of silence where only their breathing could be heard. "Jungsoo?"

"Yes?"

"The things I said last night... about being proud of you. I meant them. Not because of the records you broke. But because of the man you became despite everything I put you through."

Leeteuk gripped the phone, his knuckles turning white. "Thank you... Father."

The word hung between them, a bridge made of glass.

"Rest now," Soo Man whispered, and the line went dead.

Leeteuk sat there for a long time, the phone pressed against his chest. He felt like he was living in two worlds—the one where he was the polished idol everyone expected, and the one where he was the hidden son of an empire.

A few miles away, in a quiet recording studio, Taeyeon put on her headphones. The music began to swell—a melancholic ballad about lost time and hidden hearts. She stepped up to the microphone, her eyes closing as she thought of the man with the bandaged hand and the Chairman who stood in the shadows.

*"Even if the world doesn't know your name,"* she sang, her voice soaring with a raw, unshielded emotion that made the engineer behind the glass lean forward in surprise. *"I will know the heart that beats beneath the armor."*

She sang for the boy who had no home, for the leader who had too many responsibilities, and for the father who could only love his son in the dark. She sang for the secrets that kept them safe and the truths that kept them apart.

As the final notes faded, Taeyeon stayed in the booth, the silence ringing in her ears. She knew that the dinner had changed everything. The veil had slipped, and even if they tried to pull it back into place, the light had already touched the shadows.

The 'Special Leader' wasn't just a leader anymore. He was a person. And for the first time in twenty years, Park Jungsoo wasn't just surviving—he was being loved.

Outside, the sun continued its slow descent, casting long, golden shadows over the city of idols. The machine of SM Entertainment hummed on, oblivious to the fact that its heart had finally found its way home. And in the quiet of the dorm, Leeteuk finally fell into a deep, dreamless sleep, his bandaged hand tucked close to his chest, protected by a secret that was finally, mercifully, shared.
