The Aesthetic of a Thirsty Midoriya

The humidity of the Tokyo afternoon was thick enough to chew on, but the atmosphere inside the Endeavor Agency training gym was even more stifling. Izuku stood in the center of the polished floor, his chest heaving as he tried to regulate his breathing. Sweat slicked his brow, and his costume felt uncomfortably tight against his skin. Beside him, Camie Utsushimi was doing something she called "post-workout stretches," which mostly involved her contorting her body into positions that Izuku was fairly certain defied the laws of human anatomy.

"Ugh, Izu-kun, I am literally melting," Camie groaned, her voice echoing in the cavernous room. She was currently bent over at the waist, reaching for her toes.

Izuku, who had been reaching for his water bottle, made the mistake of looking over. His brain immediately hit a critical error. The Shiketsu hero suit was made of a high-tension polymer that left absolutely nothing to the imagination, and from this particular angle, the way it hugged her curves was... distracting. His eyes traveled, entirely against his will, to the way the dark fabric strained across her backside.

He choked on his own spit, a frantic coughing fit erupting as he turned away so fast he nearly gave himself whiplash.

"Oh my god, are you okay?" Camie popped up, her face suddenly inches from his. She didn't seem to have a concept of a 'buffer zone.' "You’re making, like, total dying-walrus noises. Is the vibe compromised?"

"I—I'm fine!" Izuku squeaked, his voice jumping three octaves. He kept his eyes fixed firmly on the ceiling, where a ventilation duct was suddenly the most fascinating thing in the world. "Just... swallowed wrong. The air is very dry today. Very dry."

Camie hummed, a playful, knowing sound. She stepped closer, her hip brushing against his leg. She reached up, her white-cuffed hand grazing his shoulder as she adjusted the zipper of her suit, which had slid down a fraction more during her stretches.

"Is the air dry, or are you just thirsty?" she teased, her dark eyes sparkling with mischief. She leaned in, whispering near his ear. "I saw you peeping the goods, Izu-kun. Don't worry, it’s a total compliment. I know I’m serving body today. It’s okay to look, just don't forget to blink, babe."

Izuku’s face didn't just turn red; it turned a deep, pulsing violet. "I wasn't—I mean, I didn't—the suit is very well-made! The structural integrity of the seams is—"

"Stop, stop!" Camie laughed, doubling over and clutching her stomach. "You are literally the funniest person I have ever met. You start talking about 'structural integrity' when you get caught looking at my butt? That is such a niche reaction. It’s low-key iconic."

She reached out and playfully slapped his arm before hooking her elbow through his, pulling him toward the exit. "Come on, Nerd-kun. We’re done for the day. I need a massive iced latte and you need to stop staring at the ceiling before you trip over your own feet. My treat, since you’re being such a dedicated fan of the aesthetic."

"I'm not a fan! I mean, I am! But not like—" Izuku stammered, his feet moving automatically to keep up with her brisk pace.

"Relax, I’m just messing with you," she said, though she didn't let go of his arm. She leaned her head against his shoulder for a brief second, a casual gesture of affection that sent a different kind of warmth through him. "But for real, you gotta work on your poker face. You’re like a walking LED sign that says 'I AM CURRENTLY FLUSTERED'."

As they walked through the bustling streets of the district, the contrast between them was stark. Izuku was a bundle of nervous energy, his eyes constantly scanning for threats or noting hero activity, while Camie moved through the crowd like she owned the sidewalk. She was constantly on her phone, snapping quick photos of storefronts or taking "pouty" selfies that she insisted Izuku be in the background of.

"Smile, Izu-kun! Give me 'strong but sensitive'!" she commanded, holding the phone up.

Izuku gave a weak, confused smile just as the shutter clicked.

"Perfect. Total boyfriend-material energy, even if we’re just besties," she chirped, her thumbs flying across the screen as she uploaded it.

They settled into a small, trendy cafe tucked away in a side street. It was the kind of place Camie loved—neon signs, pastel furniture, and drinks that looked more like science experiments than beverages. As they sat down, Camie’s phone buzzed incessantly. She glanced at the screen, and for a split second, that shadow Izuku had seen before flickered across her face.

She silenced the phone and shoved it face-down on the table.

"So," she said, her voice a little too bright. "Tell me about the UA dorms. Is it, like, a total frat house? Does the explodey boy just blow up the kitchen every morning?"

Izuku took a sip of his green tea, watching her carefully. "Kacchan is... aggressive, but he actually keeps his space really clean. Iida-kun is the one who makes sure everyone follows the rules. It’s mostly quiet, except when Kaminari and Mineta start acting up."

"Mineta? Oh, the grape kid? He’s a total creep-lord," Camie said, wrinkling her nose. "He’s got, like, zero game. He needs to learn that the vibe has to be mutual, you know? You can't just be thirsty at people without their consent. That’s a major L."

Izuku nodded, though he was still thinking about the way she’d ignored her phone. "Camie... is everything okay? With your mom? You seemed... upset when your phone rang."

Camie sighed, the bubbles in her drink suddenly more interesting than the conversation. She poked at a floating lychee with her straw. "It’s just more of the same, honestly. She’s in this 'main character' phase where she thinks her drama is the only thing that matters. She called me three times during training to complain that my dad hasn't sent the alimony check yet. Like, Mom, I’m literally trying to become a licensed hero, can we not?"

She looked up at him, her expression unusually vulnerable. "Sometimes I feel like I'm the only adult in the house, even though I'm the one who uses words like 'slay' and 'bet'. It’s exhausting, Izu-kun. It makes me want to just... turn into smoke and drift away for a while."

Izuku reached across the table, his hand hovering over hers before he gently touched her knuckles. "You shouldn't have to carry that. Being a hero student is hard enough. If you ever need a place to just... not be an adult, the UA common room is always open. I mean, I’d have to clear it with Mr. Aizawa, but he’s actually a softie under all that 'logical deception'."

Camie giggled, the sound a bit more genuine this time. She turned her hand over, catching his fingers in hers. Her skin was soft, and she squeezed his hand with surprising strength. "You’re so sweet, it’s actually kind of a problem. You’re gonna make me catch feelings if you aren't careful, and then we’d have to deal with the whole 'long-distance school' drama."

"Oh! I—"

"I'm kidding, Izu-kun! Mostly," she added with a wink that made his heart skip a beat. She pulled her hand back and picked up her phone, her mood shifting back to its usual buoyancy with practiced ease. "Anyway, enough about my tragic backstory. Check this out. I found a TikTok of a guy who looks exactly like Endeavor dancing to J-Pop. It is literally sending me to the afterlife."

She leaned over the table to show him the screen, her chest pressing against the edge of the table in a way that forced Izuku to look anywhere else. The video was indeed hilarious, but Izuku found it hard to focus on the dancing hero when Camie was so close he could smell the sweet, floral scent of her perfume.

As the evening wore on, the conversation flowed effortlessly. They talked about quirks, about their favorite heroes, and about the ridiculousness of Shiketsu’s hat requirement. Camie told him about her dream of opening a hero agency that doubled as a fashion house, and Izuku talked about his desire to be a hero who could save everyone with a smile.

"You already do that, you know," Camie said softly, looking at him over the rim of her glass. "The smile thing. It’s very 'healing-type' energy. You make people feel like things are gonna be okay, even when everything is trash."

Izuku felt a lump in his throat. "Thanks, Camie. That means a lot."

When it was time to leave, they walked back toward the train station. The city lights were flickering on, painting the streets in shades of blue and gold. As they reached the turnstiles, Camie stopped and turned to him.

"Today was a total vibe, Izu-kun. Thanks for being my emotional support nerd," she said. She stepped in close, and for a moment, Izuku thought she was going for another hug. Instead, she stood on her tiptoes and pressed a quick, soft kiss to his cheek.

It was over in a second, but it left Izuku standing frozen as if he’d been hit by a paralyzing quirk.

"Text me when you get back to the dorms!" she called out, walking backward toward her platform, her Shiketsu hat tilted back. "And try not to dream about my suit too much! I know it’s hard, but stay strong!"

She blew him a kiss and vanished into the crowd, leaving Izuku standing in the middle of the station, his face glowing like a neon sign.

***

*Izuku [9:15 PM]: I'm back at the dorms. Today was... really nice. Thank you, Camie.*

*Camie [9:16 PM]: generic response, 2/10. where’s the spice? where’s the flavor?*

*Izuku [9:17 PM]: Today was... totally Gucci?*

*Camie [9:17 PM]: OMG HE USED THE LINGO. I’M LITERALLY SCREAMING. you’re learning so fast, Izu-kun. i’m so proud. 🥹💖*

*Camie [9:18 PM]: [Voice Memo - 0:12]*

Izuku clicked the memo. He expected more slang, but instead, he heard the sound of water running and Camie’s voice, slightly muffled, singing a pop song at the top of her lungs, wildly off-key and full of vibrato.

"I’M FELLIN’ MYSELF, I’M FELLIN’ MYSELF—oh wait, is this recording? Izu-kun, don't listen to that! I’m in the shower! Actually, listen to it, I sound like an angel!"

The memo ended with a loud splash and a yelp.

Izuku fell back onto his bed, laughing so hard his ribs hurt. He stared at the ceiling, his phone clutched to his chest. His life was becoming increasingly chaotic, and his phone was filled with photos of cats in hats and videos of his best friend singing in the shower, but for the first time in a long time, the weight of One For All felt just a little bit lighter.

He spent the next hour trying to figure out what "no cap" meant, eventually falling asleep with a smile on his face, unaware that his phone was buzzing with one final message for the night.

*Camie [11:45 PM]: for real though, thanks for listening earlier. you’re a real one. love ya, bestie. sleep tight. 💤✨*

In the quiet of the UA dorms, the "love ya" didn't feel like a joke or a casual slang term anymore. It felt like a promise. A promise that no matter how loud the world got, or how heavy the shadows became, they had found a way to make their own light—one glittery, confusing, and totally iconic moment at a time.

But as Izuku drifted off, his subconscious played back the image of Camie in that hero suit, bending over to stretch, and he groaned into his pillow.

"Structural integrity," he muttered to himself. "It’s just... very good craftsmanship."

He was a terrible liar, even to himself.
