The Unseen Stage Left

– Are you sure you’re okay to go back out there? – Kinsey asked, her voice hushed as they stood just offstage, the vibrant lights of the set casting long, dramatic shadows around them. The energy of the dress rehearsal was palpable, a thrumming beat that vibrated through the floorboards.

Brynn pressed her lips together, her gaze fixed on the stage where Molly and Eleanora were now belting out a particularly enthusiastic number. The leggings Kinsey had lent her were thankfully obscured by the long skirt of her costume, which she’d managed to put back on with Kinsey’s help. The heating patch provided a gentle, comforting warmth against her lower abdomen, and the pain relievers had begun to work their magic.

– I think so, – Brynn finally replied, her voice a little steadier than before. – I mean, it’s just a rehearsal, right? And it’s not like… like I’m going to bleed through again instantly.

Kinsey squeezed her hand, a small, reassuring gesture. – Exactly. And if anything feels off, at all, you tell me. We’ll figure it out.

Brynn nodded, a tiny smile playing on her lips. She truly didn’t know what she would have done without Kinsey. The sheer panic she’d felt moments ago had been overwhelming, a wave that threatened to drown her. But Kinsey, with her seemingly endless supply of solutions and her calm, steady presence, had pulled her back to shore.

– Thanks again, Kinsey, – she said, her voice soft with genuine gratitude. – For everything. I really… I was so scared.

Kinsey’s eyes, usually sparkling with playful mischief, were full of genuine empathy. – Hey, it happens to everyone. It’s completely normal. And there’s nothing to be ashamed of. We’re all girls here, we get it.

Brynn felt a blush creep up her neck, even though she knew Kinsey was right. It was still embarrassing. But hearing Kinsey say it, with such kindness, somehow made it less so.

– Yeah, – Brynn murmured, still a little self-conscious. – I just… I didn’t expect it. Never had it happen before.

– First times are always a little jarring, – Kinsey said with a knowing look. – But now you know, and now you’re prepared. And you’ve got me.

The way Kinsey said “you’ve got me” sent a strange flutter through Brynn’s chest. It wasn’t just the words, but the earnestness in Kinsey’s gaze, the gentle pressure of her hand still holding Brynn’s. It felt… safe. And warm. And something else she couldn’t quite name.

Suddenly, Molly’s voice, amplified by the stage mic, cut through their quiet moment. – And now, a truly heartbreaking moment, as Emma realizes what she has to do!

That was their cue. Brynn felt a fresh wave of nerves, but this time it wasn’t about her period. It was about the scene. It was about being Emma, and being Emma with Alyssa, played by Kinsey.

Kinsey, sensing her apprehension, gave her hand one last squeeze before releasing it. – You’ve got this, Emma.

Brynn took a deep breath, pushing down the lingering self-consciousness and the confusing flutter in her chest. She had a role to play. She was Emma. And Emma was heartbroken.

As they stepped onto the dimly lit stage, the spotlight found them, bathing them in a warm, golden glow. The music softened, transitioning into a poignant melody. Kinsey, as Alyssa, stood center stage, her back to Brynn.

Brynn took her mark, her heart aching for Emma’s plight. She remembered the director’s notes: “Emma’s love for Alyssa is undeniable, but her fear of judgment, her fear of the unknown, is stronger. It’s a battle between her heart and her head.”

– Alyssa, – Brynn began, her voice trembling slightly, perfectly capturing Emma’s vulnerability.

Kinsey slowly turned, her eyes, usually so expressive, filled with a deep, consuming sadness. The transformation from the cheerful, supportive Kinsey to the heartbroken Alyssa was immediate and compelling.

– Emma, – Kinsey whispered, her voice laced with pain. – Please, don’t do this.

The scene unfolded as it always did in rehearsals, but tonight, for Brynn, it felt different. The words, the emotions, they were amplified. Every glance, every touch, every shared breath felt charged with an unfamiliar intensity.

– I have to, – Brynn said, her voice cracking, tears welling in her eyes as Emma’s internal struggle became her own. – I can’t… I can’t live a lie. Not anymore.

As she spoke, she stepped closer to Kinsey, her hand reaching out, almost instinctively, to cup Alyssa’s face. Kinsey leaned into the touch, her eyes closing for a fleeting moment, a silent plea.

– But what about us? – Kinsey’s voice was a raw whisper, full of desperation. – What about everything we’ve built?

Brynn’s thumb gently stroked Kinsey’s cheek, a gesture that felt so natural, so real, that she almost forgot she was acting. The boundary between Brynn and Emma, between Kinsey and Alyssa, began to blur.

– I love you, Alyssa, – Brynn confessed, the words tumbling out, heavy with a truth that transcended the script. – But… I don’t know how to be this person. I don’t know how to be… brave enough.

Kinsey’s eyes flew open, locking onto Brynn’s. In their depths, Brynn saw not just Alyssa’s pain, but a flicker of something else, something she couldn’t quite decipher. A yearning? A mirroring of her own confusion?

Then, Kinsey did something that wasn’t in the script. She reached up, her hand covering Brynn’s on her cheek, holding it there. And then, slowly, deliberately, she leaned in.

Brynn’s breath hitched. Her heart hammered against her ribs. This wasn’t in the blocking. This wasn’t what they practiced. But she didn’t pull away. She couldn’t. Every fiber of her being was drawn to Kinsey, to Alyssa.

Their lips met.

It was soft at first, tentative, a question rather than a statement. But then, as Kinsey’s grip on her hand tightened, and Brynn felt herself respond, it deepened. It was a kiss born of heartbreak and longing, of unspoken truths and terrifying possibilities. It was a kiss that tasted of tears and something new, something exhilarating and utterly overwhelming.

The music swelled, a dramatic crescendo, but Brynn barely heard it. All she could hear was the frantic beat of her own heart, and the soft sigh that escaped Kinsey’s lips as they parted.

They stood there for a moment, forehead to forehead, eyes closed, lost in the echo of the kiss. The world outside the spotlight had faded away. There was only them, and the lingering warmth on Brynn’s lips, and the confusing, intoxicating rush of emotions that swirled within her.

Then, the stage lights dimmed, signaling the end of the scene. The spell was broken.

Kinsey pulled back, her eyes still clouded with emotion, but a hint of surprise, and perhaps a touch of nervousness, now mingled with the sadness.

Brynn, for her part, felt as though she’d been struck by lightning. Her lips tingled, her entire body felt warm, and her mind was a whirlwind of confusion and a terrifying, exhilarating realization.

As they walked offstage, the usual post-scene buzz of feedback and adjustments was strangely absent. Molly and Eleanora, who had been watching from the wings, were silent, their expressions unreadable.

Kinsey avoided Brynn’s gaze, her cheeks flushed a deep crimson. She quickly busied herself with adjusting her costume, her movements a little too jerky, a little too deliberate.

Brynn, however, couldn’t tear her eyes away from Kinsey. The kiss. It wasn’t just acting. It couldn’t have been. The way her heart had soared, the way her body had responded, the way it had felt so utterly, terrifyingly right…

She had never felt anything like it with a guy.

A sudden, dizzying thought spun through her mind, a realization so profound it made her stumble.

She liked girls.

And not just girls. She liked Kinsey.

The thought hit her with the force of a tidal wave, washing away years of assumptions, years of believing she was straight. It explained the flutter in her chest when Kinsey held her hand, the comfort she felt in Kinsey’s presence, the way her eyes always sought Kinsey out.

It all made sense. Every confusing, exhilarating sensation she’d felt around Kinsey suddenly clicked into place.

Brynn felt a fresh wave of panic, different from the earlier period-related one, but just as intense. This was bigger. This was… everything.

As they reached the dressing room, Molly and Eleanora finally broke their silence.

– Wow, – Molly breathed, her eyes wide. – That was… intense.

Eleanora, ever the observer, simply nodded slowly, a knowing look on her face as she glanced between Kinsey and Brynn.

Kinsey still hadn’t looked at Brynn. She mumbled something about needing to find the director, and practically fled the dressing room, leaving Brynn alone with her two best friends and the echoing memory of a kiss that had irrevocably changed everything.

Brynn sank onto the worn velvet couch, her legs feeling like jelly. Her hands were trembling. She was still wearing Kinsey’s leggings under her costume, a small, comforting secret. But the secret she had just uncovered within herself was anything but small.

– Brynn? – Molly asked, her voice gentle, sitting beside her. – Are you okay? You look like you’ve seen a ghost.

Brynn looked at Molly, her eyes wide and a little frantic. She took a shaky breath, trying to steady herself.

– Molly, – she whispered, the words barely audible. – I think… I think I just realized something really big.

Molly leaned in, her expression one of concern. – What is it? You can tell me anything, you know that.

Brynn swallowed hard, the words catching in her throat. This was it. The confession. The beginning of a whole new chapter.

– I think, – Brynn began, her voice still a whisper, but gaining a fragile strength, – I think I like girls.

Molly’s eyebrows shot up, her mouth forming a small ‘o’ of surprise. But then, a slow smile spread across her face, a mischievous glint in her eyes.

– Oh, Brynn, – Molly said, a soft laugh escaping her lips. – Finally. Took you long enough.

Brynn blinked, confusion momentarily overriding her panic. – What do you mean, ‘finally’?

– Well, – Molly began, glancing pointedly at the door Kinsey had just exited, – let’s just say it’s been pretty obvious to everyone else.

Brynn’s cheeks flushed again. Obvious? To everyone? Had she been that transparent?

– So, – Molly continued, her smile widening, – who’s the lucky girl? Because I have a pretty strong suspicion, but I want to hear it from you. Who’s the girl who finally made Brynn realize she might not be so straight after all?

Brynn took another deep breath, the name forming on her lips, a mixture of fear and newfound certainty blooming in her heart. She looked at Molly, then at Eleanora, who was now watching her with an amused, knowing smirk.

– It’s Kinsey, – Brynn confessed, the name a soft, almost reverent whisper. – I think… I think I’m in love with Kinsey.
