The Silent Echo of a Heartbeat
The library was usually a place of quiet focus, but for Yunho, it had become a sanctuary of frantic, desperate study. However, he wasn't looking at his engineering textbooks or his calculus notes. Tucked inside the heavy binder was a printed guide to KSL (Korean Sign Language) and a tablet playing a muted video of basic conversational phrases on a loop.
Yunho was a man of many strengths—he was tall, athletic, and generally well-liked—but he had never felt more clumsy than he did trying to mimic the fluid grace of Seonghwa’s hands.
"You're doing the sign for 'mountain' wrong," a voice whispered from his left.
Yunho jumped, nearly knocking his water bottle over. He looked up to see Wooyoung leaning over the back of his chair, a mischievous glint in his eyes.
"I'm practicing," Yunho hissed, feeling his ears turn red. "And I wasn't signing 'mountain.' I was trying to sign 'art.'"
Wooyoung pulled out the chair next to him and flopped into it, ignoring the dirty look from a nearby student. "My guy, you have the biggest friendship crush in the history of this university. You’ve been staring at those diagrams for three hours. Just text him. Or better yet, go to the art wing. You know he’s there on Tuesdays."
"I can't just show up," Yunho argued, though his hands continued to twitch nervously. "I want to be able to actually *talk* to him. I don't want to just stand there like a giant, useless tree while he tries to explain things to me. He’s so patient, Woo. It makes me feel worse."
Wooyoung softened, patting Yunho’s arm. "He likes you, Yunho. Even Hongjoong said so, and Hongjoong is the human equivalent of a prickly pear. Seonghwa thinks you’re 'sincere.' That’s like, a top-tier compliment in Seonghwa-speak."
Yunho sighed, closing his binder. The image of Seonghwa’s smile from the restaurant was burned into his brain—the way his eyes crinkled and the gentle, rhythmic way he moved. Yunho didn't just want to be a 'peer mentor.' He wanted to be the person Seonghwa reached for when he had a thought he couldn't wait to share. He wanted to be a best friend, a confidant, a permanent fixture in that quiet, beautiful world.
"I’m going to find them," Yunho said, standing up with sudden resolve.
"That’s the spirit! Give 'em hell," Wooyoung cheered, perhaps a bit too loudly for a library.

The art building was a stark contrast to the rest of the campus. While the engineering halls were all gray concrete and sharp angles, the art wing smelled of turpentine, linseed oil, and old plaster. It was a maze of high ceilings and tall windows that let in the afternoon sun.
Yunho found Seonghwa in a small gallery space on the third floor. He was standing in front of a large, abstract canvas—a swirl of deep blues and jagged gold leaf. He was alone, his back to the door. He wasn't wearing his hearing aids; Yunho could tell because the familiar silver glint was missing from his ears.
Seonghwa was immersed in total silence, a state he often preferred when studying art.
Yunho paused at the entrance. He didn't want to startle him. He knew that for Seonghwa, someone appearing suddenly in his peripheral vision could be jarring. He walked forward slowly, making sure his footsteps were heavy enough to create a slight vibration on the wooden floorboards, and then moved into Seonghwa’s line of sight at a respectful distance.
Seonghwa blinked, his gaze shifting from the blue paint to Yunho. A slow, radiant smile spread across his face, and he raised a hand in a small wave.
*“Yunho. You are here,”* Seonghwa signed, his movements light and airy.
Yunho took a deep breath, centering himself. He dropped his bag and stood tall, trying to remember the sequence he’d practiced.
*“I wanted to see you,”* Yunho signed. He fumbled the sign for 'see,' his fingers tangling for a second, but he pushed through. *“And the art. This is... beautiful?”* He tilted his head, questioning if he’d used the right adjective.
Seonghwa’s smile widened. He stepped closer, the scent of vanilla and something faintly metallic—paint, perhaps—trailing with him. He reached out and gently took Yunho’s hands in his. His skin was cool and soft. He repositioned Yunho’s thumb, pressing it down slightly to correct the sign for 'beautiful.'
*“Yes. Beautiful,”* Seonghwa confirmed. He let go of Yunho’s hands, but the warmth remained. *“You practiced.”*
"I did," Yunho said aloud, knowing Seonghwa could read his lips if he spoke clearly. "I want to be a good friend. A real friend."
Seonghwa watched his mouth intently, then nodded. He pointed to the bench in the center of the room, gesturing for Yunho to sit. Once they were seated side-by-side, Seonghwa pulled a small sketchbook from his bag and a charcoal pencil. He scribbled something quickly and showed it to Yunho.
*I like that you try. Most people just shout or give up.*
Yunho felt a pang in his chest. "I’ll never give up," he promised.
Seonghwa looked at him for a long moment, his dark eyes searching Yunho’s face. There was a profound stillness about him that usually made Yunho feel restless, but today, it felt like an invitation. Seonghwa began to sign again, slower this time, making sure Yunho could follow.
*“Silence is not empty,”* Seonghwa signed. *“It is full of feelings. Hongjoong hears the music in the silence. I see the colors in it. What do you see?”*
Yunho struggled to find the signs. He wanted to say something deep, something that matched the poetic nature of the man sitting next to him. Instead, he opted for honesty.
*“I see you,”* Yunho signed, his movements careful. *“I see a friend I want to know better.”*
Seonghwa leaned his head back against the wall, a soft huff of a laugh escaping him. It was a tiny, precious sound. He reached over and tapped Yunho’s shoulder, then pointed to the painting.
*“The blue is the ocean,”* Seonghwa explained through signs and the occasional mouthed word. *“The gold is the sun. It is a memory of a beach. I went there when I was a child, before the world became quiet.”*
Yunho watched Seonghwa’s hands move like birds in flight. He realized then that he didn't just have a 'friendship crush'—he was in awe. He wanted to protect this person, but more than that, he wanted to be invited into the inner sanctum of his thoughts.
"Can we go somewhere?" Yunho asked, gesturing toward the door. "The park? Or coffee? Somewhere... sunset?"
Seonghwa understood 'sunset.' He nodded eagerly, reaching into his pocket to pull out his hearing aids. He tucked them into his ears and clicked them on, wincing slightly as the ambient hum of the building rushed back in.
"Okay," Seonghwa said, his voice a gentle, melodic breath. "Let's go."
***
They met up with Hongjoong and Wooyoung near the campus gates. The sun was beginning its descent, painting the sky in bruises of purple and orange.
Hongjoong was leaning on his cane, his thick glasses pushed up against his forehead as he squinted at the horizon. Wooyoung was standing dangerously close to him, narrating the sky with the enthusiasm of a sports commentator.
"And then there’s this weird streak of pink, Joong! It looks like someone took a highlighter to a cloud. It’s vibrant, like, neon-flower-shop vibrant," Wooyoung exclaimed, gesturing wildly.
Hongjoong was smirking, his head tilted toward Wooyoung’s voice. "I can see the glow, Woo. It’s a big orange blob from here, but I get the idea. You’re very descriptive. A bit dramatic, but descriptive."
"I have to be dramatic! You’re missing the nuances!" Wooyoung countered, laughing.
As Yunho and Seonghwa approached, Hongjoong turned his head unerringly toward them. "You're late. Yunho, I assume you were busy tripping over your own feet trying to sign?"
"Hey!" Yunho protested, though he was grinning. "I’m getting better! Seonghwa gave me a lesson."
Seonghwa bumped his shoulder against Yunho’s, a silent gesture of support. *“He is a good student,”* Seonghwa signed to Hongjoong.
Hongjoong let out a snort. "He’s a giant golden retriever. Of course he’s a good student; he wants the treats."
"The treat is Seonghwa’s company," Yunho said, and then immediately felt the heat rise to his cheeks. "I mean—as a friend. Obviously."
Wooyoung cackled, slinging an arm around Hongjoong’s shoulders. "See? I told you. Purest friendship crush in history."
They began to walk toward the park that bordered the campus. It was a favorite spot for students to unwind, filled with winding paths and ancient oak trees. Yunho took his place naturally by Seonghwa’s side, while Wooyoung stayed close to Hongjoong, occasionally reaching out to guide him around a stray frisbee or a rogue tree root.
"So, Hongjoong," Wooyoung said, his tone shifting to something more curious. "How do you actually 'hear' the colors? You told Seonghwa you hear music in the silence."
Hongjoong tapped his cane rhythmically on the pavement. "Everything has a frequency, Wooyoung. The wind in the leaves is a high-pitched woodwind. The way the sun feels on my skin... that’s a low, resonant cello note. When you describe the colors, I just map them to the sounds I already know. It’s like building a symphony in my head."
Seonghwa was watching Hongjoong, and even though he couldn't hear every word, he knew his friend well enough to understand the sentiment. He looked at Yunho and then at the trees.
*“The shadows are long,”* Seonghwa signed, pointing to the ground. *“They look like dancing people.”*
Yunho looked down. The shadows of the trees were indeed stretching across the grass, swaying slightly in the breeze. "They do," he whispered.
He felt a sudden, overwhelming surge of gratitude. A month ago, he would have walked through this park without a second thought, his mind on his next exam or what he was having for dinner. But through Seonghwa and Hongjoong, the world was becoming three-dimensional in a way he hadn't expected. It was louder, brighter, and more meaningful.
They found a spot on a grassy knoll overlooking a small pond. The water reflected the dying light, shimmering like liquid copper. They sat in a semi-circle, the atmosphere shifting into something peaceful and intimate.
"I brought something," Hongjoong said, reaching into his backpack. He pulled out a pair of high-quality headphones and a small digital recorder. "I’ve been working on a piece. It’s... well, it’s about this. The program. Meeting you guys."
Wooyoung’s eyes lit up. "Can we hear it?"
Hongjoong hesitated, his fingers tracing the buttons on the recorder. "It’s not finished. And obviously, Seonghwa can’t hear the nuances, but..." He looked toward Seonghwa, who was watching him with an encouraging expression.
Seonghwa reached out and placed his hand on the grass, then gestured for the others to do the same. *“I can feel the bass,”* he signed. *“Play it.”*
Hongjoong plugged a small portable speaker into the recorder instead of the headphones. He set it on the ground, the vibration traveling through the earth.
The music began—a soft, pulsing rhythm that felt like a heartbeat. It was layered with the sound of wind chimes, the rustle of paper, and a soaring, melancholic violin melody that seemed to capture the feeling of searching for something in the dark.
Yunho watched Seonghwa. The older boy had closed his eyes, his head tilted back. His hand remained pressed firmly to the ground, his fingers twitching slightly in time with the heavier beats. A look of pure, unadulterated peace settled over his features.
As the music swelled, Yunho felt a lump form in his throat. He looked at Wooyoung, who was uncharacteristically still, his gaze fixed on the sunset. He looked at Hongjoong, who sat with his head bowed, his hands resting on his cane, the creator of this beautiful, invisible bridge between their worlds.
When the music faded into the natural sounds of the evening, no one spoke for a long time.
Seonghwa opened his eyes. They were shimmering with unshed tears. He turned to Hongjoong and signed one word, over and over, with a fervor that made Yunho’s heart ache.
*“Beautiful. Beautiful. Beautiful.”*
Hongjoong cleared his throat, looking uncharacteristically flustered. "Yeah, well. It needs work. The transition at the end is messy."
"It was perfect," Wooyoung said, his voice thick with emotion. "I could see every dance move I’ve ever wanted to do in that song."
Yunho turned to Seonghwa. He didn't use signs this time; he just reached out and took Seonghwa’s hand, squeezing it gently. Seonghwa squeezed back, his thumb rubbing a small circle over the back of Yunho’s hand—the same circular motion he had made over his heart the week before.
*“Friend,”* Seonghwa signed with his free hand, pointing first to Yunho, then to himself.
"Friend," Yunho repeated, his voice steady and full of promise.
As the stars began to peek through the purple haze of the sky, the four of them sat in the grass, a mismatched group of students who had started as strangers and were quickly becoming each other's anchors.
Yunho knew he still had a lot to learn. He would fumble his signs, he would say the wrong thing, and he would probably continue to have his 'friendship crush' for a long time to come. But as he sat there in the cooling grass, listening to the world through Hongjoong’s ears and seeing it through Seonghwa’s eyes, he realized that the best kind of communication didn't require perfect grammar or a clear voice.
It just required being there, in the silence and the shadows, holding on to the people who made the world feel a little less quiet and a lot more bright.
"Hey, Yunho," Hongjoong said suddenly, breaking the silence.
"Yeah?"
"You're still holding his hand. I can't see much, but I can see two blurred shapes that haven't moved in ten minutes."
Yunho didn't let go. Instead, he grinned, looking at Seonghwa, who was blushing a soft pink in the moonlight. "I'm just making sure he doesn't get lost in the dark, Joong."
*“I am not lost,”* Seonghwa signed, his eyes sparkling with mischief. *“I am exactly where I want to be.”*
And as they walked back to the dorms, the giant engineer and the ethereal artist trailing behind the bickering dancer and the blind composer, Yunho knew that this was only the beginning of a very long, very beautiful story.
