I love you

The Echo of a Silence

For the next three days, Nini felt like she was living in a state of suspended animation. The kiss had happened—she knew it had, because her lips still felt the ghost of his touch every time she closed her eyes—but the aftermath was a vacuum. There was no follow-up text, no grand declaration, and certainly no second kiss. Jamal had left her apartment that night with a soft smile and a "see you tomorrow," leaving Nini to wonder if she had imagined the entire thing or if "peace" was just a polite way of saying he didn't feel a spark.

Work at the Säbener Strasse was a minefield of awkward glances and professional politeness. She spent her mornings filming training drills and her afternoons tucked away in the media suite, trying to pretend her heart didn't lurch every time a tall, lanky figure in a training bib walked past the window.

"You look like you’re trying to decode the Enigma machine, Nini," a voice chirped.

Nini jumped, nearly dropping her gimbal. Aleksandar Pavlović stood there, grinning, with Thomas Müller looming behind him like a mischievous shadow.

"Just editing the 'Behind the Scenes' vlog for the weekend," Nini replied, her voice a little too high-pitched. "We need some B-roll of the shooting drills."

"Well, you’re in luck," Thomas said, clapping his hands together. "The 'Magic Boy' is right behind us. We’re ready for our close-ups."

Jamal walked up a moment later, looking slightly breathless from the session. His eyes met Nini’s for a fleeting second—a spark of something unsaid passing between them—before he looked down at his boots.

"Hey," he said softly.

"Hey," she whispered back.

"Alright, enough with the greetings!" Thomas shouted, always the life of the party. "We have content to create! Fans want to see the future of German football and, of course, the veteran legend who teaches them everything they know."

They moved to a quiet corner of the training pitch where the light was hitting the grass just right. Nini focused on her work, directing the three of them through a series of "this or that" questions for a TikTok segment. She tried to remain the professional intern, the girl who didn't have a crush on the star player, but Jamal wasn't making it easy.

As the shoot wound down, Nini sat on a equipment trunk, leaning over her phone to review the footage. She was focused on trimming a clip of Pavlo tripping over a cone when she felt a sudden warmth at her back.

Jamal had stepped up behind her. He didn't just stand there; he leaned in, his chest pressing lightly against her shoulder blades as he peered over her shoulder to look at the screen. The scent of his cologne, mixed with the fresh scent of the pitch, enveloped her.

"I think that transition is a bit fast," Jamal murmured, his voice vibrating through her back. "Maybe hold on Pavlo’s face for a second longer? His expression is hilarious."

Nini’s fingers froze on the screen. She could feel the heat radiating from him, the solid weight of him anchoring her to the spot. It felt incredibly intimate, a casual display of closeness that screamed *something* to anyone watching.

Pavlo, who was leaning against a goalpost a few feet away, watched them with a knowing smirk. He glanced at Thomas, who was busy juggling a ball, and then back at the pair.

"So," Pavlo said, his voice dripping with feigned innocence. "Are you two actually dating now, or is this just 'very close' friendship for the cameras?"

The question hung in the air like a heavy fog. Nini’s heart hammered against her ribs. She didn't look up, her eyes glued to the frozen frame of Pavlo on her screen.

"No," Nini said, the word coming out a bit too quickly, a reflex born of three days of agonizing uncertainty.

"Yes," Jamal said at the exact same time, his voice steady and calm.

The silence that followed was deafening. Thomas stopped juggling, the ball thudding onto the grass. Pavlo burst into a loud, boisterous laugh.

"Well, that’s awkward," Thomas remarked, grinning. "One of you is definitely having a better time than the other."

Nini felt the blood rush to her cheeks, turning her face a violent shade of pink. She finally looked up, twisting her neck to see Jamal. He looked just as startled as she was, his brow furrowed in confusion.

"No?" Jamal repeated, looking at her.

"Yes?" Nini countered, her voice trembling.

"I’ll leave you two to synchronize your stories," Pavlo said, grabbing Thomas by the arm and leading him toward the dressing rooms. "Good luck, Jamal! You’re going to need it!"

Jamal stepped back, the warmth leaving Nini’s back instantly. He opened his mouth to say something, but a coach called his name from across the field.

"I... I have to go," he stammered, looking torn. "I’ll come by tonight? Please?"

Nini couldn't even find her voice. She just nodded once, watching him jog away.

***

The sun had long since set by the time the knock came. Nini had spent the evening pacing her living room, wearing a pair of soft grey lounge pants and a tight tank top, her hair a wild halo of curls she’d given up on taming. She felt like she was standing on the edge of a cliff.

When she opened the door, Jamal didn't wait for an invitation. He stepped inside, his expression more serious than she had ever seen it. He wasn't wearing his training gear today; he was in a simple black hoodie and jeans, looking less like a global superstar and more like the boy who had once tripped over his own feet to say hello to her.

"You said no," he started, without preamble.

Nini closed the door, leaning her back against it. "You haven't talked to me in three days, Jamal. We kissed, and then you acted like we were just coworkers. What was I supposed to say in front of Pavlo and Thomas? 'Yes, we’re dating, but he hasn't texted me since he kissed me'?"

Jamal winced, rubbing his hand over his face. "I know. I’m an idiot. I told you, my head was a mess. I was trying to give you space because I didn't want to rush you. I thought... I thought 'peace' meant we could take it slow."

"Slow is one thing," Nini said, her voice small. "Silence is another."

Jamal took two long strides, closing the distance between them. He reached out, taking her hands in his. His palms were warm, his grip firm.

"I said 'yes' because in my head, there is no one else," he said, his eyes searching hers. "I’ve spent all day thinking about how I answered that question without even thinking. It was the most honest thing I’ve said all year. Nini, I don't want to be your friend who plays Cupid. I don't want to be the guy who pushes you toward Pavlo."

He took a deep breath, his thumbs brushing over her knuckles.

"I want to be the one who takes you to that coffee shop. I want to be the one you talk to when you’re stressed. I want to be your boyfriend. Properly. If you’ll have me."

The tension that had been coiling in Nini’s chest for months finally snapped. A soft, relieved sob escaped her throat, and she surged forward, throwing her arms around his neck.

"Yes," she whispered into the crook of his neck. "God, yes, Jamal."

He let out a long, shaky exhale, his arms wrapping around her waist and lifting her slightly off the floor. He buried his face in her curls, breathing her in.

"Finally," he murmured. "I’m so bad at this."

"You really are," she laughed, pulling back just enough to look at him.

He didn't hesitate this time. He leaned down, his lips meeting hers in a kiss that was nothing like the one before. Where the first kiss had been a question, this one was an answer. It was hungry and certain, a release of all the built-up frustration and longing of the past few months.

Jamal backed her up until her heels hit the edge of the sofa, and they tumbled down onto the cushions without breaking the connection. His hands, usually so precise on the ball, were frantic as they moved to cup her face, his fingers tangling in her hair.

Nini groaned softly into the kiss, her hands sliding under the hem of his hoodie to feel the warm, solid muscle of his back. He tasted like mint and felt like home.

He pulled back for a second, his breathing ragged, his eyes dark with an intensity that made Nini’s knees weak. "I’ve wanted to do this since the day you started at the club," he confessed, his voice a low growl. "I was just too stupid to realize it."

"I knew," Nini teased, breathless. "I always knew."

He silenced her with another kiss, deeper this time, his tongue grazing hers. The "peace" he had described before was still there, but it was now underscored by a hum of electricity that made her entire body vibrate.

They spent the rest of the night on that sofa, and eventually in the sanctuary of her bedroom, making up for every lost moment. There were soft, tender kisses that tasted of apologies, and fierce, demanding ones that spoke of possession. They talked in between, low-voiced confessions whispered against skin, laughing about Pavlo’s interference and Jamal’s spectacular cluelessness.

At one point, draped across him as he stroked her hair, Nini looked up at him. "You know Pavlo is going to be insufferable tomorrow, right?"

Jamal grinned, a playful, victorious glint in his eyes. "Let him be. I’ll just tell him he was right about one thing."

"What’s that?"

Jamal leaned down, pressing a lingering kiss to the tip of her nose. "That you’re the best thing that ever happened to this club. And to me."

Nini smiled, pulling him down for another kiss, knowing that the game of Cupid was finally over, and for once, everyone had won.
