Chapter 1 — Destiny Islands The chapter would be about Sora, Riku, and Kairi as ordinary teenagers whose lives are about to be disrupted, rather than immediately framing everything as a giant cosmic conflict. Opening Sora lives on a small island community with his mother and younger sister. He spends most of his free time with Riku, his closest friend and rival. Riku is restless. He's fascinated by stories about the outside world and increasingly frustrated with the island's isolation. Sora, meanwhile, is more attached to home but doesn't want to admit that he's afraid of leaving. Then Kairi arrives. Rather than simply appearing mysteriously, she's a girl around their age who has been taken in by the island community after being found alone following an unexplained maritime incident. She remembers almost nothing about where she came from. Sora becomes fascinated by her. Riku is more suspicious. That creates the first major tension between the three: Sora: wants to protect Kairi and understand her. Riku: thinks Kairi is connected to something much bigger. Kairi: desperately wants to recover her past. The "door" The kids have an old abandoned structure on the island that they've turned into their hangout. One night, Riku tells Sora that he's discovered something underneath it: a sealed door embedded in the rock. There's no magical Keyblade yet. No talking Donald or Goofy. Just something genuinely strange. The door appears to have been deliberately constructed, but nobody knows by whom. Riku becomes obsessed with opening it. Sora is uncomfortable with the idea. Kairi recognizes a symbol carved into the door. She doesn't know why. The storm A massive storm hits the island. This replaces the relatively abstract "Darkness destroys the islands" opening with something that initially looks like a natural disaster—except things about it don't make sense. The sea pulls violently away from the shore. Animals flee inland. Electrical equipment fails. People report seeing strange lights offshore. Sora goes looking for Riku and Kairi. He finds Riku at the sealed door. Riku has somehow managed to open it. Behind it isn't another room. It's darkness. Not an evil creature or a giant portal—just an impossible absence of light, like the inside of the universe has been exposed. Riku looks into it. "There's something out there." Sora tries to pull him away. Riku refuses. Kairi's disappearance Kairi suddenly collapses. Sora catches her. For a moment, she seems to recognize him and says something like: "I've been here before." Then the darkness surges through the structure. Sora loses consciousness. When he wakes up, the storm has stopped. The island is devastated. Riku and Kairi are gone. But Sora isn't. And that's where the mystery begins. The Keyblade Rather than Sora simply receiving a magical weapon because destiny chose him, I'd make the Keyblade something ancient and inexplicable. Sora finds it lying beside him after the storm. At first, he assumes it's some kind of ceremonial weapon. He doesn't know what it does. He certainly doesn't know why he can use it. The important thing is that Sora doesn't immediately become a superhero. He's frightened, confused and searching for his friends. Final scene Sora walks through the ruined island until he reaches the beach. There's no sign of his family. No sign of Riku. No sign of Kairi. Then he sees something floating in the water. A piece of wood from the old raft they'd built together. Carved into it are the initials: S + R + K Sora realizes something: The island wasn't destroyed randomly. Whatever happened was connected to them. Cut to black. Chapter 1's central question Instead of: "How do we save the universe?" the grounded version starts with: "What happened to my friends, and why did it happen to us?"
