Locker of misery

The Architect of His Own Undoing

The Hidden Mist Onsen Resort was shrouded in a literal fog that morning, but for Shūtarō Mendō, the haze was entirely internal. While the rest of Class 2-4 had departed for a mandatory "Nature Appreciation Stroll" led by a megaphone-wielding Onsen-Mark, Shūtarō had claimed a debilitating migraine. It wasn't entirely a lie; his head throbbed with the rhythmic pulse of a man who had seen the abyss and realized the abyss was wearing a Tomobiki High uniform.

He sat on the edge of the reconstructed bed in Room 404. The staff had replaced the charred silk with standard white linens, but the air still felt heavy with the scent of sandalwood and scorched pride. Shūtarō’s hands were folded in his lap, his back as straight as a katana blade. He was alone. For the first time in seventy-two hours, he was not being poked, prodded, or used as a bolster by Ataru Moroboshi.

"Silence," Shūtarō whispered, closing his eyes. "Purity. Isolation. I am the master of my domain."

He stood up, intending to find a book to distract himself from the lingering phantom sensation of Ataru’s head on his chest. As he approached the low table near the window, he noticed a thick, cream-colored envelope resting on the tatami. It bore the Mendō family seal, but the wax was red—Ryōko’s personal color.

"What now, you twisted little demon?" he muttered, tearing the envelope open.

He expected a bomb. He expected a mocking poem. He did not expect the glossy stack of photographs that slid out into his hand.

Shūtarō’s breath hitched. He nearly dropped the pile. They were high-definition, professional-grade shots taken at the hot springs the night before. But they weren't just of the scenery. They were of Ataru Moroboshi.

The first photo showed Ataru standing at the edge of the pool, the moonlight catching the lean, athletic lines of his back. The second was a profile shot, capturing the surprisingly sharp angle of his jawline as he laughed. But as Shūtarō flipped through them, the "artistic" nature of the photography vanished, replaced by Ryōko’s trademark voyeuristic cruelty.

There were photos of Ataru completely naked, captured from the shadows of the rocks. Every angle was represented with clinical, terrifying clarity. The way the water droplets clung to the hair on his chest; the curve of his hip; the raw, unpolished masculinity that Ataru usually hid beneath his bumbling, lecherous exterior. It left absolutely nothing to the imagination.

"This is... this is an outrage," Shūtarō choked out, his face turning a shade of crimson that rivaled the morning sun. "I must destroy these. I must burn them. I must..."

He didn't put them down. His eyes remained fixed on a shot of Ataru stretching, his muscles taut and glistening under the steam. Shūtarō felt a sudden, violent surge of the same heat that had plagued him in the locker, the palanquin, and the bed. But here, in the silence of Room 404, without the real Ataru there to ruin the moment with a stupid comment or a nasal honk of a laugh, the feeling was different. It was concentrated. It was overwhelming.

Shūtarō’s pulse hammered in his ears. He was exhausted, his defenses eroded by days of psychological torture. He looked at the door. It was bolted. The class wouldn't be back for hours. The isolation he had craved suddenly felt like a cage, and the only key was the pile of glossies in his trembling hand.

"It’s just... stress relief," Shūtarō whispered to the empty room, his voice sounding like a stranger’s. "A biological necessity to purge the trauma. If I do this, the dreams will stop. The obsession will end. I am simply... taking charge of the situation."

He sank back onto the white sheets, the photos spread out around him like a deck of cursed cards. His breath came in shallow, ragged hitches. He closed his eyes, letting the images sear into his retinas, merging the high-definition details with the tactile memories of the night before. The warmth of the skin. The scent of the water.

The silence of the room was broken only by the rustle of fabric and the frantic, desperate rhythm of a man trying to outrun his own shadow. Shūtarō’s mind was a storm of contradictions, a Mendō-born samurai spirit clashing with a body that had finally, irrevocably declared mutiny. He was lost in a haze of silk and shame, the world narrowing down to the friction and the fire.

"Moroboshi..." he gasped, the name slipping out like a confession.

The sliding door to Room 404 didn't just open; it slammed back into its recess with a violent *thud*.

"Hey, Mendō! Onsen-Mark fell down a ravine and the hike is canceled! You won't believe the—"

Shūtarō’s soul left his body. He froze, his hand still occupied, his eyes flying open to see Ataru Moroboshi standing in the doorway. Ataru was panting, his hair windblown, clutching a souvenir bag of rice crackers.

The silence that followed was more destructive than any of Lum’s lightning bolts. Ataru’s gaze traveled from Shūtarō’s flushed, horrified face, down to his busy hand, and finally to the array of naked photographs scattered across the bed.

Ataru’s jaw didn't just drop; it seemed to unhinge. The bag of rice crackers hit the floor with a soft *crunch*.

"You..." Ataru’s voice was a high-pitched wheeze. "Mendō... what... what are you... those are..."

Shūtarō scrambled backward, frantically trying to pull his yukata closed while simultaneously sweeping the photos into a pile. He looked like a man trying to hide a landslide with a teaspoon.

"Moroboshi! This... this is not what it looks like!" Shūtarō shrieked, his voice cracking into a register that only bats could hear.

"It looks like you’re jerking off to pictures of me!" Ataru screamed, his face contorting into a mask of pure, unadulterated horror. He backed away toward the hallway, his hands raised as if to ward off a demon. "You’re a pervert! You’re a total, world-class creep! All that talk about 'purity' and 'aristocracy' and you’re in here... with... with my... my butt!"

"They were a gift! I was inspecting them for evidence of trespassing!" Shūtarō scrambled off the bed, his legs tangling in the sheets as he fell to the floor. "Stay back! Don't you dare leave this room!"

"Stay back? I’m calling the police! I’m calling Lum! I’m calling the news!" Ataru was hyperventilating now, the reality of the past few days crashing down on him. "The locker... the bed... you were touching me on purpose! You were 'trembling' because you’re a sicko! I slept next to you! I put my arm around a guy who has a shrine to my naked body!"

"It is not a shrine!" Shūtarō roared, finally regaining his feet. He lunged forward, grabbing the front of Ataru’s jacket and slamming him against the doorframe. His eyes were wild, the pupils dilated with a mixture of lingering arousal and terminal panic. "You will not say a word, Moroboshi! Do you hear me? Not a single word!"

"Let go of me, you freak!" Ataru struggled, but Shūtarō’s grip was fueled by the strength of a man who had nothing left to lose but his entire life’s meaning. "Wait until Lum hears this! She’ll fry you into a charcoal briquette! Wait until Shinobu finds out her 'refined Mendō-kun' is a Moroboshi-sexual deviant!"

"If you speak," Shūtarō hissed, his face inches from Ataru’s, "I will ensure that the name Moroboshi is erased from the face of the Earth. Do you understand me? I have the power, Ataru. I have the resources."

"You can't buy my silence on this!" Ataru barked, though his voice wavered as he saw the genuine, cold steel in Shūtarō’s gaze. "This is too big! This is the mother of all scandals!"

"Is it?" Shūtarō’s voice dropped to a low, dangerous rumble. He felt a strange, cold clarity wash over him. The shame was so total that it had inverted into a twisted kind of power. "Think about your future, Ataru. You want to be a civil servant? You want to work in an office? With one phone call, I can ensure you never even get a job as a street sweeper. I can buy the apartment building your parents live in and turn it into a parking lot for my octopuses."

Ataru paled. "You wouldn't."

"I would," Shūtarō said, his grip tightening. "I will buy the school. I will have you expelled and blacklisted from every university in Japan. I will buy the very air you breathe and charge you for every lungful. I will ruin you, Ataru. I will turn your life into a hollow shell of misery before the sun sets today."

Ataru stared at him, his mouth working silently. He looked down at the bed, then back at Shūtarō. The horror was still there, but it was being slowly replaced by the realization that he was trapped in a cage far more effective than any locker.

"You’re insane," Ataru whispered.

"I am a Mendō," Shūtarō corrected him, his voice trembling with the effort of maintaining his composure. "And a Mendō does not allow his... indiscretions... to become public knowledge. You will return to that bed. You will sit down. And we will come to an agreement."

"I’m not sitting on that bed!" Ataru squirmed. "It’s... it’s contaminated!"

"SIT!" Shūtarō bellowed.

Ataru flinched and sank onto the edge of the mattress, as far away from the photos as possible. Shūtarō stood over him, breathing heavily, his yukata still disheveled. He looked like a fallen angel who had decided to become a landlord in hell.

"Here is the deal," Shūtarō said, pacing the small space of the tatami. "You will tell no one. Not Lum, not Shinobu, not even your own shadow. In exchange, I will... I will provide you with an allowance. A monthly stipend. You can buy all the arcade games and cheap snacks your heart desires."

Ataru’s eyes flickered. "An allowance?"

"A substantial one," Shūtarō added, his eyes narrowing. "But the moment a single rumor reaches my ears, I will deploy the Black Glasses Squad to dismantle your life piece by piece. I will start with your collection of girlie magazines and move up to your house."

Ataru looked at Shūtarō, then at the photos. A slow, twisted realization began to dawn on his face. The horror was still there—the sheer, visceral "grossness" of being the object of Mendō’s secret desire—but Ataru was, if nothing else, a survivor. He was a boy who lived with an alien princess who electrocuted him daily. He was used to weird.

"So," Ataru said, his voice regaining a bit of its usual nasal bravado, though his hands were still shaking. "You’re basically paying me for my silence because you’re... you’re obsessed with me."

Shūtarō flinched as if he’d been slapped. "It is not obsession! It is a temporary psychological fracture caused by your proximity!"

"Whatever you say, 'Master Mendō,'" Ataru smirked, though it was a weak, fearful thing. He reached out and gingerly picked up one of the photos—the one of him laughing in the steam. "You know, this is actually a pretty good shot. My deltoids look huge."

"Put that down!" Shūtarō snatched the photo away, his face turning an even deeper shade of purple.

"Make me," Ataru said, testing the waters. "What are you gonna do? Threaten me again? Or are you gonna... you know... look at it some more?"

Shūtarō felt his spirit break. He slumped against the wall, covering his face with his hands. "Just... leave, Moroboshi. Go find the class. Tell them I’m... I’m dead. Tell them I’ve joined a monastery."

"And the allowance?" Ataru asked, standing up and heading for the door, though he kept his eyes fixed on Shūtarō as if he were a dangerous animal.

"It will be in your locker on Monday," Shūtarō muffled into his palms. "Now get out. Before I change my mind and decide that murder is a cleaner solution."

Ataru didn't need to be told twice. He bolted from the room, his footsteps echoing down the hallway as he sprinted toward the safety of the crowds.

Shūtarō remained on the floor of Room 404. He looked at the scattered photos, the silent witnesses to his downfall. He realized, with a cold shiver, that the power dynamic had shifted. He had threatened Ataru’s future, but Ataru now held Shūtarō’s soul in his grubby, rice-cracker-stained hands.

"Ryōko," Shūtarō whispered, looking toward the ceiling. "I hope you’re happy. You’ve finally destroyed me."

From the vent in the ceiling, a tiny, high-tech lens retracted with a soft *whirr*.

In the room next door, Ryōko Mendō leaned back in her chair, watching the recorded footage on a monitor. She took a slow, elegant sip of her tea and smiled.

"Oh, Shūtarō," she giggled, her eyes sparkling with a truly demonic light. "I’m not even halfway finished. We still have the third day of the retreat, after all. And I haven't even introduced the 'Shared Bathing Exercise' yet."

She pressed a button, and the printer in the corner began to churn out a fresh set of photos—this time, of Shūtarō’s face at the exact moment Ataru had walked in.

"Truly," Ryōko sighed, "this is the best school trip ever."
