Love
The Mark of the Shadow
The morning air in the Tokyo Jujutsu High dining hall was thick with the scent of miso soup and the palpable, awkward tension radiating from the corner table. Usually, Megumi Fushiguro was a pillar of stoic distance, a boy who treated personal space as a sacred vow. Today, however, he seemed intent on rewriting the laws of physics to see if two human bodies could occupy the same coordinates.
Yuki was currently trying to eat a piece of grilled mackerel, a task made significantly more difficult by the fact that Megumi’s left arm was hooked around her waist like a vice, and his head was buried firmly in the crook of her neck. His dark, spiky hair tickled her skin, and every time she moved her arm to lift her chopsticks, his grip tightened.
"Gumi," Yuki giggled, her voice muffled as she leaned back into him. "I need to breathe. And eat. Mostly eat."
"You're eating," Megumi muttered against her collarbone. His voice was lower than usual, a gravelly vibration that sent a shiver down her spine. "I’m just... making sure you don't fall off the bench."
"On a bench this wide? You're a terrible liar," she teased, reaching back to scratch the nape of his neck.
Across from them, Nobara Kugisaki was staring with an expression that sat somewhere between disgusted and fascinated. She poked at her rice with a ferocity that suggested she was imagining it was Megumi’s head.
"I’ve seen cursed spirits with more boundaries than you, Fushiguro," Nobara remarked, pointing a chopstick at him. "Seriously, what happened? Did you get hit by a lingering technique? Is this a ‘clingy-curse’ situation? Because if so, I’m calling Shoko to come and exorcise your dignity."
Megumi didn't even look up. He just shifted his hand, his fingers splaying across the exposed skin of Yuki’s midriff, his thumb tracing the hem of her short uniform top. The possessive gesture was so blatant that Yuji, sitting next to Nobara, actually choked on his milk.
"Whoa, Fushiguro!" Yuji coughed, wiping his mouth. "Your cursed energy is... it’s like a warm blanket. But, like, a really heavy, territorial blanket. Is everything okay? You’re acting like someone’s gonna try and kidnap Yuki-chan right in front of us."
"Someone might," Megumi said, his eyes finally flicking upward to narrow at Yuji.
Yuji held up his hands in surrender. "Not me! I promise! I just wanted to ask if she wanted to play Mario Kart later, but honestly, I’m scared you’ll summon Mahoraga if I win against her."
Yuki laughed, the sound bright and melodic, clashing beautifully with her dark eyeliner and silver chains. She turned in Megumi’s lap—a feat of gymnastic flexibility given how tightly he was holding her—and cupped his face.
"You're being a big, grumpy shadow, aren't you?" she whispered, her nose brushing his.
Megumi’s ears turned a vivid shade of crimson, but he didn't pull away. Instead, he leaned forward, pressing his forehead against hers. The silence between them was heavy with the memory of the previous night—the heat, the frantic heartbeat, and the way she had whispered his name until he felt like he was drowning in her.
"I just don't like the way they look at you," he admitted, his voice so quiet only she could hear.
"They're my friends, silly. But I'm yours," she replied, her eyes softening. She planted a loud, lingering kiss on his cheek, leaving a faint smudge of lip tint.
"Gross! Get a room!" Nobara shouted, though she was secretly enjoying the chaos. "Actually, don't get a room, stay here so I can continue to make fun of you. It’s the highlighting of my week."
The sliding door to the hall slammed open, and Satoru Gojo sauntered in, looking entirely too energized for eight in the morning. He took one look at the huddled pair and stopped, his grin widening until it reached his blindfold.
"Oh ho! The lovebirds are still nesting!" Gojo chirped, teleporting instantly to the end of their table. He leaned down, his face inches from Megumi’s. "Megumi-kun, I have a mission for you. It’s in a very crowded mall with lots of handsome civilians and—"
"No," Megumi snapped.
"I didn't even finish the sentence!" Gojo laughed, ruffling Megumi’s hair. "But I see how it is. The fledgling has left the nest and immediately built a fortress around his girlfriend. How romantic! How primal! I should take notes."
"Please don't," Megumi muttered, pulling Yuki closer.
"Yuki-chan," Gojo said, his tone turning conspiratorial. "How is he treating you? Is he too heavy? If he’s being a bother, I can always take you out for crepes while he stays here and broods in the shadows."
Before Yuki could respond, Megumi’s shadows surged. The floor beneath Gojo’s feet turned into a dark, viscous liquid, and a Divine Dog’s paw began to emerge, claws bared.
"Gojo-sensei," Megumi said, his voice dropping into a dangerous register. "Walk. Away."
Gojo raised his hands, cackling. "Okay, okay! The wolf is protective today! I’ll leave you to your... whatever this is. But don't forget training at ten! And Yuki, try to bring him in one piece, if you can peel him off you!"
As Gojo skipped away, Yuki leaned her head back against Megumi’s shoulder, looking up at him with a mischievous glint in her eyes. "You're going to have a reputation, Gumi. The 'Clingy Prince of Jujutsu High'."
"I don't care," he said, and for the first time, he sounded like he meant it.
The rest of the morning followed a similar pattern. When they went to the training grounds, Megumi refused to spar with anyone else. He insisted on "helping" Yuki with her form, which mostly involved him standing directly behind her, his hands over hers as she practiced her cursed energy output.
Maki Zen'in, arriving late with her polearm over her shoulder, stopped dead at the sight of them. She looked at Toge, who was sitting on a nearby bench eating a rice ball.
"What's wrong with Fushiguro?" Maki asked, gesturing toward the pair. "He looks like he’s trying to wear her as a backpack."
"Mustard leaf," Toge replied, shaking his head solemnly.
"He’s been like this since breakfast," Panda added, leaning against a tree. "It’s a classic case of post-first-time territorial marking. Very common in the animal kingdom. Though, usually, humans are a bit more subtle about it."
Maki snorted. "Subtle? Fushiguro doesn't know the meaning of the word when it comes to her. Look at him. He’s literally growling at the wind."
Indeed, Megumi was currently glaring at a butterfly that had ventured too close to Yuki’s head.
"I think it’s cute!" Yuki called out, noticing the group watching them. She was currently leaning back against Megumi’s chest as he adjusted the silver chains on her boots. "He’s like a giant, prickly teddy bear."
Megumi froze, his hand lingering on her ankle. He looked up at the second-years, his face a mask of stoic defiance despite the blush that was now permanent on his cheeks. "Do none of you have anything better to do? Go train."
"We are training, Megumi," Maki said, a smirk playing on her lips. "We’re training our patience by not throwing a spear at your head for being so sappy."
As the afternoon rolled in, the group moved toward the dorms to relax. Yuki, being her usual energetic self, wanted to sit on the porch and listen to music. Megumi, of course, followed.
They sat on the wooden steps, the sun warming the air. Yuki pulled out her phone and offered an earbud to Megumi. He took it, but instead of sitting next to her, he sat on the step below, pulling her legs over his shoulders so she was effectively caged by his body.
"You know," Yuki whispered, leaning down to kiss the top of his head. "I really liked last night. I didn't think it would make you this... intense."
Megumi was silent for a long time, his fingers tracing the patterns of the tattoos she’d drawn on her own skin with a marker earlier that day.
"I’ve spent a lot of time being afraid of losing things," Megumi said, his voice barely audible over the music. "And I realized... I don't want to just have you. I want everyone to know you’re mine. I want the world to stay back."
Yuki felt a swell of affection so strong it made her chest ache. She knew Megumi’s history—the abandonment, the responsibility, the coldness he used as a shield. To see him crack that shield for her, to see him be so vulnerable in his possessiveness, was the greatest gift he could give.
"I'm not going anywhere, Gumi," she said, sliding down the steps so she could wrap her arms around his neck from behind. "Even if you weren't holding onto me this tight, I'd still be right here."
He turned his head, catching her lips in a soft, lingering kiss. It was private and sweet, a stark contrast to his behavior earlier in the day.
"Hey! I found the necklace!"
The moment was shattered as Yuta Okkotsu approached, holding a small velvet box. He stopped a few feet away, seeing the intimate position they were in. He looked at Megumi, then at Yuki, and gave a sheepish smile.
"Sorry, am I interrupting?" Yuta asked.
Megumi stood up, keeping one hand firmly locked with Yuki’s. "No. It’s fine."
Yuta handed the box to Yuki. "It’s from that market in Casablanca. I thought the silver work matched your style."
Yuki opened the box, letting out a small gasp. Inside was a delicate silver pendant shaped like a stylized skull with amethyst eyes. "Oh, Yuta! It’s perfect! Thank you!"
Without thinking, she stepped forward to give Yuta a quick, friendly hug.
Megumi’s reaction was instantaneous. He didn't summon a spirit, but he stepped into the space between them before Yuki could even make contact. He took the box from her hand and looked at Yuta with a gaze that could have frozen a volcano.
"Thanks, Okkotsu," Megumi said, his voice clipped. "I’ll help her put it on."
Yuta blinked, then let out a soft, knowing laugh. He patted Megumi on the shoulder—a move that made Megumi stiffen. "You’re a lucky guy, Fushiguro. Take care of her."
As Yuta walked away, Yuki turned to Megumi, her hands on her hips. "Megumi Fushiguro! You almost bit his head off! He was just being nice."
"He was touching your shoulder," Megumi grumbled, opening the box and taking out the necklace.
"He’s like a brother to me!"
"He’s a Special Grade sorcerer with a lot of charisma," Megumi countered, stepping behind her to clasp the jewelry around her neck. His fingers lingered on the nape of her neck, his touch possessive. "I don't trust it."
Yuki turned around, the new pendant resting against her collarbone, right above the line where her uniform jacket ended. She looked at him, her dark eyes sparkling with amusement.
"You're going to be exhausted by the end of the week if you keep this up," she said, reaching up to adjust his collar.
"I'll manage," he replied, pulling her back into his arms.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in bruises of purple and orange, the rest of the students began to head inside. They passed the couple on the porch—Megumi still clinging to Yuki as if she were his only anchor in a storm, and Yuki laughing, her head resting on his chest.
Nobara walked by, shaking her head. "I’m giving it three days before she gets annoyed and kicks him into the pond."
"I don't know," Yuji said, looking back at them. "She looks pretty happy. And honestly? It’s nice to see Fushiguro not looking like he’s carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders for once."
"He’s just carrying a goth girl instead," Nobara retorted, though her voice was soft.
Back on the porch, Megumi watched them disappear into the dorms. He finally let out a long, slow breath, his grip loosening just a fraction. The jealousy was still there, a low hum in his blood, but it was dampened by the warmth of her body against his.
"Gumi?" Yuki whispered, her eyes drooping with sleepiness.
"Yeah?"
"Can we go back to your room? I want to watch that horror movie you hate."
Megumi looked down at her—at the girl who had invaded his quiet, shadow-filled life and turned it into something vibrant and chaotic. He thought about the way she had looked at him the night before, the way she had trusted him with everything.
"We can watch the movie," he said, kissing her forehead. "But I'm not letting go of you the whole time."
Yuki beamed, her energetic spirit undimmed even by the long day. "Deal."
As they walked back to the dorms, hand in hand, Megumi’s shadow stretched out long and wide behind them, covering her path, shielding her from the world, and making it very clear to anyone watching that Yuki belonged exactly where she was.
And for the first time in his life, Megumi Fushiguro didn't mind the attention at all. He had found something worth holding onto, and he wasn't about to let the shadows take it away.
