Love

The Weight of His Hand

The "She is in love with me" fever had barely begun to simmer down when the internet found its next obsession. Jamal had thought the jersey incident had marked his territory clearly enough, but he was learning that the digital world had a short memory and an insatiable appetite.

It happened on a Tuesday, a day that was supposed to be mundane. Jamal had finished training early at Säbener Straße and decided to surprise Mi by picking her up from her pilates studio in the city center. He was driving his modest black Audi, wearing a simple hoodie and a baseball cap pulled low, hoping to remain under the radar.

As he pulled up to the curb, he saw her. Mi was walking out of the glass-fronted studio, her thick curls tied up in a messy, high ponytail. She was glowing with that post-workout flush, dressed in a matching set of charcoal-grey ribbed leggings and a tiny cropped top. The fabric hugged every curve of her petite, athletic frame, showcasing the results of the discipline she maintained just as rigorously as he did his own.

He hopped out of the car to meet her halfway, unable to keep the grin off his face. When she saw him, her eyes lit up, and she practically leaped into his arms. Jamal caught her easily, his right hand sliding naturally around her waist to steady her as he pulled her flush against him for a quick, lingering kiss.

He didn't notice the flash of a long lens from across the street. He didn't see the fan who had stopped dead on the sidewalk to snap a quick photo on their iPhone. He was only focused on the way Mi smelled like vanilla and hard work.

By the time they reached home and were settling in to order sushi, the photo was already trending on X and Instagram.

"Oh, for heaven’s sake," Mi muttered, staring at her phone as she sat on the kitchen island. "They’re at it again."

Jamal leaned over her shoulder, a piece of yellowtail nigiri halfway to his mouth. He froze. The photo was high-quality—a side profile of the two of them. Because of the angle and the way Jamal was pulling her in, his hand was splayed across the small of her back and her waist. His fingers, long and elegant—the hands of a pianist or a world-class athlete—seemed to wrap almost entirely around her middle. The contrast between his large, powerful hand and her delicate, narrow waist was startling.

He scrolled down to the comments, bracing himself for the usual "she’s so pretty" remarks. Instead, he found something entirely different. The tone had shifted from admiration to a sort of collective, breathless shock.

"The size difference is actually insane. Look at his hand compared to her waist. I’m fainting."

"Jamal is a giant and she’s so tiny... how does that even work? Like, biologically?"

"One hand. He’s holding her with one hand and he’s covering her entire torso. I’ve seen enough, I’m going to go cry in a corner."

"Respectfully, if Jamal Musiala looked at me like that and held me like that, I wouldn’t know how to act. She’s stronger than the marines for handling that."

"The way he’s just... palming her waist. I’m screaming. He’s so much bigger than her."

Jamal felt a heat creep up his neck, but it wasn't the sharp, biting jealousy from the island photo. This was different. It was a low, humming heat in his gut. He looked at the photo, then looked at Mi, who was currently blushing a deep shade of crimson as she read a particularly graphic comment about "physics and logistics."

"They’re obsessed with my hands," Jamal remarked, his voice a bit deeper than usual. He set his chopsticks down and stepped closer to her, standing between her knees as she sat on the counter.

Mi looked up, her curls falling over her shoulders. "They’re obsessed with the fact that you look like you could snap me in half, Jamal. People are being so... vivid."

"Are they?" He reached out, recreating the pose from the photo. He placed his hand on her waist, his thumb reaching toward her navel while his fingers wrapped around toward her spine. He marveled at it for a second—how perfectly she fit into his grip. "I didn't realize I was that much bigger than you."

Mi let out a shaky breath, her hands resting on his shoulders. "You're a professional athlete, Bambi. You're over six feet tall and made of muscle. I’m... well, I’m me. I’m petite."

He leaned in, his nose brushing against hers. "Do you mind it? The comments?"

Mi shook her head, a playful glint returning to her eyes. "The island photo made you jealous because they were looking at me. This photo... it’s making them talk about *us*. Or mostly about what you do to me. It’s a bit embarrassing, but... I don’t hate it."

Jamal chuckled, the sound vibrating in his chest. "I’ve stopped being annoyed. I think I finally understand what Thomas was talking about."

"What did Müller say?"

"He said that in this business, people are always going to have something to say. You can either let it get under your skin, or you can enjoy the fact that you have what they’re all dreaming about." He squeezed her waist slightly, watching her pupils dilate. "And I definitely have what they’re dreaming about."

The following Saturday was the big one: Der Klassiker. Bayern Munich versus Borussia Dortmund. The tension in the city was palpable, and the media buildup had been relentless. However, half the sports tabloids weren't even talking about Jamal’s form or the tactical lineup. They were still circulating the "pilates photo," using it as a thumbnail for articles about Jamal’s "growing maturity" and "dominant presence."

As Jamal walked onto the pitch for the warm-up, he could hear the whistles. He saw a few signs in the crowd—one particularly bold fan had a poster that read: *Jamal, I have a 24-inch waist too!*

He just shook his head, a smirk playing on his lips. He felt a newfound confidence. The world could talk all they wanted; they could speculate about their private life or make memes about the size of his hands. It didn't change the fact that at the end of the night, he was the one going home to her.

The game was a battle. It was physical, fast, and grueling. Jamal was marked heavily, two defenders constantly nipping at his heels. But every time he felt a shove or a shoulder-check, he felt that same surge of "protective energy" he’d discovered weeks ago. He felt powerful.

In the 75th minute, with the score tied at 1-1, Jamal received a difficult ball near the edge of the box. He shielded it with his body, using his height and his long reach to keep the defender at bay. With a quick feint that sent the Dortmund captain the wrong way, he carved out an inch of space and curled the ball into the top right corner.

The Allianz Arena exploded. It was a roar that shook the very foundation of the stadium.

Jamal didn't do a backflip. He didn't slide on his knees. He ran toward the corner flag, right in front of the section where the photographers were lined up. He stopped, stood tall, and simply looked at his own hands. He flexed them slowly, then looked up into the stands where Mi was cheering, her face bright with pride. He winked at her, a silent acknowledgement of the secret the whole world was trying to guess.

After the game, the locker room was high on adrenaline. Thomas Müller walked over to Jamal, slapping him on the back.

"Nice goal, Giant," Müller teased, grinning ear to ear. "I saw you looking at your hands. Are you checking to see if they’ve grown even more? The internet might break if they do."

Jamal laughed, pulling his jersey over his head. "I’m just embracing the meme, Thomas. If they want to talk about how big I am, I might as well give them a show on the pitch, too."

"That’s the spirit," Müller said, nodding approvingly. "Use it. The intimidation factor is real. The defenders are starting to look at you like you’re an apex predator."

Later that night, the press conference was a foregone conclusion. The journalists were eager to talk about the goal, but they couldn't resist the personal angle.

"Jamal," a reporter from a major fashion and lifestyle magazine asked, "you’ve become something of a viral sensation lately for reasons outside of football. The photos of you and your girlfriend have sparked a lot of... conversation about your physical presence. Does that affect how you see yourself on the pitch?"

Jamal leaned into the microphone, looking more relaxed than he ever had in front of the press. "I think it just reminds me that I’m a man, not just a player. I have a life, I have someone I protect and care for. If people want to focus on the size of my hands or how I look standing next to her, that’s fine. It doesn't change my game. If anything, it makes me feel stronger."

He paused, a mischievous glint in his eyes. "But to answer the question everyone is asking on social media... yes, I am that much bigger than her. And no, I don't think she minds at all."

The room erupted in a mixture of gasps and laughter. It was the perfect "mic drop" moment.

When Jamal finally made it back to the apartment, he found the lights dimmed and music playing softly. Mi was waiting for him on the sofa, a glass of wine in her hand and a familiar smirk on her face.

"You're becoming a bit of a menace, Musiala," she said as he kicked off his shoes. " 'I don't think she minds at all'? Really?"

Jamal walked over, his movements slow and deliberate. He looked down at her, the height difference even more pronounced in the soft lighting of their home. "Did I lie?"

Mi set her glass down on the coffee table and stood up, stepping into his space. She had to tilt her head back significantly to meet his eyes. "No. You didn't lie."

He reached out, his hand finding her waist again, mirroring the photo that had set the internet on fire. His palm felt warm against the silk of her robe. He leaned down, his voice a low murmur against her ear. "I’m not jealous anymore, Mi. I realized something."

"What’s that?" she whispered, her hands sliding up his chest to rest against his neck.

"They can look at the pictures all they want. They can zoom in, they can comment, they can make their jokes." He pulled her closer, his hand splaying across her back, his fingers nearly touching his own thumb as he circled her waist. "But they’re looking at a screen. I’m looking at you. And I’m the only one who knows exactly how you fit in my arms."

Mi pulled back just enough to look at him, her expression soft and full of love. "You've grown up a lot in the last few weeks, Bambi. You're not the shy boy I met a year ago."

"Maybe I just needed the world to try and take a piece of you for me to realize what I had," he admitted, his thumb tracing the line of her jaw. "But now the world knows. You're mine. And I’m yours. No matter what the comments say."

He picked her up then, effortlessly, her feet leaving the floor as he tucked her against his chest. She let out a small gasp of surprise, her arms locking around his neck.

"See?" he teased, walking toward the bedroom. "The internet was right about one thing."

"What’s that?"

"I really can pick you up with one hand."

Mi laughed, the sound bright and clear, echoing through the quiet apartment. "Just don't go posting a video of that, Jamal. I don't think the world is ready."

"Let them wait," he said, kicking the door shut behind them. "This part isn't for them."

The next morning, the "hand photo" was still the top post on several gossip sites, and the clip from his press conference had already reached ten million views. People were calling him "The Big Man of Munich," and the memes had evolved into a series of "Expectation vs. Reality" posts comparing his shy on-field interviews to his bold off-field persona.

But Jamal didn't check his phone once that morning. He spent it in bed, watching the sunlight filter through the curtains, his large hand resting protectively over Mi’s as she slept beside him.

He had realized that the internet was a loud, chaotic place, filled with people who only saw the surface. They saw the white bikini, the oversized jersey, and the contrast of a large hand on a tiny waist. They saw the "National Treasure" and the "Apex Predator."

But as he felt Mi stir and press her face into his chest, Jamal knew the truth was much quieter, much deeper, and infinitely better than any viral post could ever capture. The world was in love with the idea of them, but they were just in love. And that was the only thing that would never be a meme.
