Love
The Velvet Lock
The invitation was embossed in gold, a heavy cardstock that signaled the event of the year: The Munich Gala for Global Arts. It was the first time Jamal and Mimi would officially walk a red carpet as a couple. No more grainy park photos, no more Jumbotron accidents. This was deliberate. This was their statement.
Mimi stood in front of the full-length mirror in their suite, adjusting the straps of her dress. It was a masterpiece of midnight-black silk, clinging to her petite curves like a second skin. The neckline plunged daringly low, while a slit up the side revealed a generous length of leg that would undoubtedly have the internet in a tailspin within minutes. Her chestnut curls had been tamed into elegant, glossy waves that cascaded down her back, and her lips were painted a deep, bruised plum.
"You’re doing that thing again," Mimi said, catching Jamal’s reflection in the glass.
Jamal was standing by the door, already dressed in a sharp, custom-tailored tuxedo that made him look older, more formidable. He was staring at her with an expression that bordered on pained. His jaw was set, and his eyes were dark as they tracked the way the silk moved over her hips.
"Doing what?" he asked, his voice gravelly.
"The 'I want to wrap you in a rug and hide you in the basement' look," she teased, turning around to face him. She walked over, her heels clicking on the marble floor, and straightened his bow tie. "It’s one night, Jamal. We’re going public. You have to be on your best behavior."
Jamal sighed, his hands instinctively finding her waist. The contrast between his large, tan hands and the delicate black silk was striking. "I hate that everyone is going to see you like this. I feel like I’m sharing a secret that was only ever meant for me."
"You aren't sharing me," she whispered, leaning in to press a light kiss to his chin to avoid ruining her lipstick. "You’re showing them what you’ve already won. There’s a difference."
The gala was a whirlwind of flashing bulbs and polite conversation. On the red carpet, Jamal was the picture of the protective gentleman. He kept a firm hand on the small of her back, leaning down to whisper in her ear whenever a photographer shouted too loudly. The chemistry between them was palpable, a magnetic pull that drew every eye in the room.
Inside the ballroom, the champagne flowed with dangerous ease. Jamal, usually disciplined and careful with his intake due to his training schedule, found himself caught in the celebratory spirit. He was surrounded by international celebrities, fashion moguls, and fellow athletes. Every toast seemed to lead to another glass of vintage Krug.
By the third hour, Mimi noticed the change. Jamal’s movements had become slightly looser, his laughter a bit louder. When he leaned in to talk to her, the scent of expensive champagne was heavy on his breath. But more than the alcohol, it was the way he was looking at her. The possessiveness had been amplified by the drink, turning into a raw, simmering hunger.
"Jamal, I think that’s enough for tonight," Mimi whispered, placing a hand on his chest as he reached for another glass from a passing waiter’s tray.
He looked down at her, his eyes hooded and glassy. A slow, lopsided smirk crossed his face—a look she had never seen him give anyone but her, and certainly never in public. "I’m fine, Mimi. I’m celebrating. I’m celebrating you."
He leaned down, his lips brushing against the shell of her ear. "Do you have any idea how much I’ve wanted to take this dress off you since we left the hotel? Every man in this room is looking at your chest. I can see them. I want to hit something."
Mimi felt a shiver of heat race down her spine. "You’re tipsy, Jamal. We should go."
"I’m not leaving yet," he murmured, his hand sliding down from her waist to firmly cup her rear, hidden by the folds of the silk. He squeezed, a bold, reckless gesture that made her gasp. "I want them to know. I want them to see me touching you and know they can’t."
"Jamal! Not here," she hissed, her face flushing crimson. She looked around nervously, but the crowd was dense and the music was loud. "Come with me. Now."
She grabbed his hand, pulling him away from the circle of German actors he had been talking to. Jamal stumbled slightly but followed her, his grip on her hand tight and uncompromising. She needed to get him somewhere quiet, somewhere he could sober up—or at least somewhere they wouldn't cause a national scandal.
She spotted a hallway leading toward the restrooms. It was a secluded wing of the palace, lined with velvet curtains and gold-leaf mirrors. As they neared the doors, Mimi realized the men’s room was crowded with a line of tuxedoed guests. Without thinking, she swerved toward the women’s lounge, which appeared empty.
She pushed the heavy oak door open, dragging Jamal inside. The room was opulent, smelling of expensive perfume and fresh lilies, with marble stalls and a plush velvet vanity area. Luckily, it was deserted.
Mimi turned the lock with a definitive *click*.
"What are we doing in here?" Jamal asked, his voice thick. He leaned back against the door, his legs slightly apart, watching her with a predatory intensity.
"You’re making a scene out there," Mimi said, trying to sound stern despite her racing heart. She stepped toward him, reaching up to splash a little cold water from the sink onto a paper towel. "You need to pull it together, Musiala. If a paparazzi caught that move you just made on the dance floor—"
She didn't get to finish. Jamal reached out, grabbing her by the waist and hoisting her up onto the cold marble vanity. Her black dress bunched up around her thighs, and she let out a small cry of surprise.
"Let them watch," Jamal growled. He stepped between her legs, his large body crowding her into the mirror. He looked disheveled, his bow tie undone and his hair messy, but he had never looked more handsome. "I don't care about the cameras. I don't care about the gala. I just want you."
He crashed his lips against hers, the kiss tasting of champagne and desperation. It wasn't the polite, gentle kiss of a boyfriend; it was the kiss of a man who had reached his breaking point. His tongue invaded her mouth, demanding and hot, while his hands roamed over her body with a frantic energy.
"Jamal, wait," she breathed, breaking the kiss for a second. "We’re in a public bathroom. Someone could walk in."
"The door is locked," he rasped, his face burying in the crook of her neck. He began to trail wet, biting kisses down toward the neckline of her dress. "I can’t stop, Mimi. Seeing you in this dress all night... hearing those men talk about you... it’s driving me crazy."
She felt him then—the hard, unmistakable ridge of his desire pressing against her thigh through the thin fabric of his trousers. He was desperate, his breath coming in ragged gasps. Jamal was usually so controlled, so careful with his image and his body, but the combination of the alcohol and the suffocating jealousy of the evening had stripped away his inhibitions.
He groaned, a low, guttural sound of frustration, as he fumbled with the zipper of his pants. His movements were clumsy from the drink, his fingers trembling.
"Help me," he pleaded, his forehead dropping onto her shoulder. "Mimi, please. I’m dying."
Mimi looked at him, her heart aching with a mix of love and a sudden, sharp desire of her own. She had never seen him like this—so vulnerable, so undone by his need for her. The power she held over him was terrifying and intoxicating all at once.
She knew she couldn't let him go back out there like this. He was too far gone, too close to the edge. And she knew, with a certainty that made her blood hum, that she wanted to be the one to give him peace.
"Okay," she whispered, her voice trembling. "Okay, Jamal. Just stay still."
She slid off the vanity, her heels clicking softly on the marble. She sank to her knees on the floor, the silk of her expensive dress pooling around her like a dark cloud. She didn't care about the fabric or the setting. She only cared about the man standing before her.
Jamal let out a shaky breath, his hands coming down to rest on her shoulders, his fingers digging into her skin as if to ground himself.
Mimi reached out, her small hands steady as she finished what he had started. She eased his trousers down, her eyes never leaving his face. When he was finally bared to her, she saw the sheer scale of his need. He was trembling, his muscles taut and jumping under his skin.
"Mimi..." he choked out, his eyes fluttering shut as her fingers first brushed against him.
She didn't hesitate. She leaned forward, her chestnut curls falling over her face like a veil, and took him into her mouth.
The sound that left Jamal’s throat was something primal. He arched his back, his head hitting the wooden door behind him with a dull thud. His hands moved from her shoulders to her hair, his fingers tangling in the waves she had spent hours perfecting. He didn't care. He was lost in the sensation, in the heat and the rhythm of her mouth.
"God, Mimi," he gasped, his voice breaking. "You’re so... you’re perfect. You’re mine."
Mimi worked with a focused intensity, her heart thudding against her ribs. She could hear the distant muffled sounds of the gala—the thumping bass of the music, the faint roar of laughter—but in this small, marble-lined sanctuary, there was only the sound of Jamal’s ragged breathing and the wet friction of her lips.
She looked up at him through her lashes, seeing the way his face was contorted in a mask of pure, unadulterated pleasure. This was the man the world called "Bambi." This was the quiet hero of Munich. And here he was, shattered and rebuilt by her touch alone.
As she felt him begin to peak, his grip on her hair tightened. His hips jerked forward instinctively, his breath hitching in his throat.
"I’m—Mimi, I’m going to—"
"Do it," she muffled against him, her eyes locked on his. "For me, Jamal."
The release hit him like a physical blow. Jamal’s entire body went rigid, his eyes snapping open and blowing wide as he surrendered to the sensation. He let out a long, shuddering groan, his fingers clenching in her hair as he came, the intensity of it leaving him breathless and weak.
Mimi didn't pull away. She stayed with him, swallowing every drop of his surrender, wanting to feel the exact moment the tension left his body. She wanted to be the vessel for all that pent-up possessiveness and desire.
When it was over, the silence in the bathroom felt heavy and sacred. Jamal slumped against the door, his chest heaving as he fought to find his breath. Mimi slowly sat back on her heels, wiping a stray drop from the corner of her mouth with her thumb, her expression calm and satisfied.
Jamal looked down at her, his eyes clearing as the haze of alcohol and lust began to lift, replaced by an overwhelming wave of devotion. He reached down, his hands trembling as he cupped her face and pulled her up to her feet.
"I don't deserve you," he whispered, his voice thick with emotion. He leaned down, pressing his forehead against hers, his eyes shimmering. "I’m sorry. I got carried away. I shouldn't have..."
Mimi reached up, placing a hand over his heart, which was still racing. "Don't be sorry. You needed me. And I wanted you to know that no matter who is looking at me out there, this is the only place I want to be."
Jamal kissed her then, a soft, lingering kiss that tasted of salt and the deep, permanent bond they shared. He felt a sense of peace settle over him, the jagged edges of his jealousy smoothed over by her touch.
He helped her fix her dress, his hands much steadier now. He watched as she reapplied her plum-colored lipstick in the mirror, her movements graceful and composed, as if she hadn't just been on her knees on a bathroom floor.
"How do I look?" she asked, turning to him with a small, knowing smile.
Jamal adjusted his tuxedo jacket, pulling himself back into the role of the professional, the athlete, the icon. But as he looked at her, he knew that the secret they shared was now deeper than any tabloid could ever uncover.
"You look like the woman I’m going to marry," he said simply.
Mimi’s eyes softened, and she reached out to take his hand. "Then let’s go back out there and give them something to talk about."
They walked out of the bathroom together, their heads held high. As they re-entered the ballroom, the flashes began again, the whispers rising like a tide. Jamal kept his arm firmly around her waist, his hand resting in that same possessive spot on her hip.
The public saw a golden couple, radiant and successful. They saw the "National Treasure" and the "Football King." They didn't see the faint flush on Jamal’s neck or the secret triumph in Mimi’s eyes.
But as they moved through the crowd, Jamal leaned in one last time, his voice a low vibration against her ear.
"The jersey stays on tonight, Mimi. But the dress is coming off the second we get home."
Mimi laughed, a bright, honeyed sound that cut through the noise of the gala, and squeezed his hand. The world could have the icons, but they would always have the truth.
