Love

Out of the Shadows and Into His Arms

The transition from "the girl who runs away" to "the girl Jamal Musiala can’t stop kissing" happened so fast that Mimi felt like she was suffering from permanent vertigo. It had been three weeks since Phonzie’s birthday party, and the shift in the atmosphere at the Säbener Strasse training ground was palpable.

Before, the air between Mimi and Jamal had been thick with awkward tension and unsaid words. Now, it was thick with something much more distracting.

Mimi was standing in the media room, staring at her laptop screen and trying to edit a reel of Thomas Müller’s best jokes from the morning session. She was so focused on the timeline that she didn't hear the door click shut or the soft footsteps on the carpet.

Suddenly, a pair of strong arms wrapped around her waist, and a chin rested on her shoulder. The familiar scent of Jamal’s cologne—that clean, intoxicating mix of citrus and wood—filled her lungs.

"You’re working too hard," Jamal murmured, his voice vibrating against her neck. Before she could respond, he pressed a lingering kiss just below her ear, sending a flurry of butterflies erupting in her stomach.

"Jamal," she giggled, leaning her head back against him. "Anyone could walk in. Leroy is literally right down the hall."

"Let them walk in," Jamal said, his tone playful but with an underlying edge of pride. He turned her around in his arms, his hands resting on her hips. He didn't care about the cameras or the teammates or the coaches anymore. He just wanted to be near her. He leaned down, catching her lips in a sweet, slow kiss that made Mimi forget all about Thomas Müller’s jokes.

It was obvious to everyone at Bayern. The way Jamal’s eyes scanned the sidelines during training until he found her curly brown hair. The way Mimi’s face lit up like a Christmas tree whenever he walked into a room. The way he would find any excuse to touch her—a hand on the small of her back as they walked, a quick peck on the cheek before he headed to the locker room, or the way he’d pull her into a quiet corner just to hold her for a minute.

But while the club was a safe bubble, the world outside was not.

It started with a few whispers on Twitter. A blurry photo of them leaving a restaurant. A "source" claiming the young star was seeing someone on the staff. Mimi tried to ignore it, tucking her curls under a baseball cap and keeping her head down, but the curiosity of the public was a ravenous beast.

The breaking point came on a Tuesday afternoon. Mimi had taken a half-day to run errands and walk her dog, a spirited little Corgi named Mochi. It was a beautiful, sunny Munich day, and for the first time in a while, Mimi felt relaxed. She had left her heavy work gear behind, opting for a thin, breezy white blouse and a denim miniskirt that showed off her legs. Her brown curls were down, bouncing around her shoulders as she laughed at Mochi’s antics in the park.

She was walking back toward her apartment building, swinging her keys and feeling pretty, when she heard the distinct, rapid-fire *click-click-click* of a high-end camera lens.

She froze for a split second, her eyes darting to a black SUV parked across the street. A man with a long lens was leaning out of the window, capturing every angle of her. She ducked her head and hurried inside, her heart hammering against her ribs, but the damage was done.

By that evening, the photos were everywhere.

*“Bambi’s Secret Flower: Meet the Woman Who Captured Jamal Musiala’s Heart,”* one headline screamed. The photos were high-resolution and, unfortunately for Mimi’s desire for anonymity, very flattering. She looked glowing, happy, and undeniably linked to the world-famous footballer.

Jamal arrived at her apartment an hour after the photos went viral. He didn't even wait for her to buzz him in; he used the spare key she’d given him and practically burst through the door.

Mimi was sitting on her sofa, scrolling through the comments on a major gossip site. Most people were saying she was "cute" or "stunning," but the sheer invasion of privacy made her feel exposed.

"Mimi," Jamal said, his voice tight. He dropped his bag and walked straight to her, pulling the phone out of her hand and tossing it onto the cushions.

"They followed me, Jamal," she whispered, looking up at him with wide eyes. "I didn't even see them until it was too late."

Jamal sat down beside her, his expression a mix of anger and something else—something protective. He took her hands in his, his thumbs rubbing over her knuckles. "I saw the pictures. You look beautiful, Mimi. But I hate that they were following you. I hate that they know where you live."

"It’s okay," she tried to reassure him, though her voice wavered. "It’s part of the job, right? Being with you?"

"No," Jamal said firmly. "It shouldn't be like this. You were just walking Mochi. You shouldn't have to look over your shoulder every time you leave your house."

He stood up and began to pace the small living room. Mimi watched him, her brow furrowed. He looked restless, his dark eyes flashing with a possessiveness she hadn't seen before.

"I don't like you being here alone," he said, gesturing to the apartment. "The security here is basic. Anyone can just walk up to the front door. If the paparazzi found you, so can the weirdos."

"Jamal, I’ve lived here for two years. I’m fine," she said softly.

He stopped pacing and turned to face her, his expression suddenly very serious. He walked back to the sofa and knelt on the floor between her knees, looking up at her.

"Move in with me," he said.

Mimi’s heart stopped. "What?"

"Move into my place," Jamal repeated, his voice gaining strength. "I have the space. I have the security. There’s a gate, a code, and a team that monitors the perimeter. You’d be safe. Mochi would have a bigger yard. And..." He paused, his gaze softening. "And I wouldn't have to leave you every night."

Mimi felt the air leave her lungs. "Jamal, we’ve only been dating for a few weeks. That’s... that’s a huge step. People will think we’re crazy."

"I don't care what people think," he insisted, reaching up to cup her face. "I’ve known you for a year, Mimi. I know I love you. I know I want to wake up next to you. Seeing those photos today... it made me realize how much I want to protect you. I can’t do that if you’re across town in a building anyone can get into."

Mimi bit her lip, her mind racing. She thought about her tiny apartment, the way the paparazzi had been waiting for her, and then she thought about Jamal’s house—the quiet, the safety, and the man who was currently looking at her like she was the only thing in the world that mattered.

"It’s so fast," she whispered.

"I know," he murmured, leaning forward to rest his forehead against hers. "But everything with us has been fast since that night at the party. I don't want to wait for some 'appropriate' amount of time just to feel like you’re safe. Stay with me. Please."

Mimi looked into his eyes and saw the sincerity there, the genuine worry mixed with an overwhelming affection. Her shyness tried to flare up, telling her to retreat, to stay in her little bubble, but the love she felt for him was louder.

"Mochi sheds a lot," she said, a small smile playing on her lips.

Jamal let out a breath of relief, a bright grin breaking across his face. "I’ll buy the best vacuum cleaner in Germany. Is that a yes?"

Mimi laughed, throwing her arms around his neck and pulling him into a hug. "Yes, Jamal. It’s a yes."

The move happened over the weekend with the help of a very amused Alphonso Davies and a surprisingly efficient Leroy Sané.

"I told you he was obsessed," Leroy teased, carrying a box of Mimi’s shoes into Jamal’s sprawling villa. "One picture in a miniskirt and he’s locking you away in his castle."

"I am not locking her away!" Jamal shouted from the other room, though he was grinning as he helped Mimi unpack her books.

"He’s just protective," Mimi defended him, blushing as she tucked a stray curl behind her ear.

"He’s whipped," Phonzie corrected, grinning as he lugged a crate of Mochi’s toys. "But we’re happy for you, Mimi. You’re good for him. He’s stopped moping around the locker room like a lost puppy."

By Sunday evening, the boxes were mostly cleared away, and the house felt different. It felt like a home.

Mimi was standing in the kitchen, making tea, when Jamal walked in. He looked relaxed, wearing a pair of grey sweatpants and a hoodie. He walked up behind her, just like he had in the media room, and pulled her back against his chest.

"Happy?" he asked, his voice low and sweet.

Mimi turned in his arms, looking around the beautiful, modern kitchen and then back at the man she loved. The fear of the paparazzi, the nervousness of the public eye—it all felt manageable as long as she was here, with him.

"Very happy," she said, standing on her tiptoes to kiss his nose.

Jamal smiled, his eyes dark and full of warmth. He picked her up, her legs instinctively wrapping around his waist, and set her down on the marble countertop.

"Good," he whispered, his hands sliding up her thighs. "Because I have a lot of lost time to make up for. A whole year of you avoiding me."

Mimi giggled, her fingers tangling in the hair at the nape of his neck. "I wasn't avoiding you, I was just... preserving my sanity."

"Well," Jamal said, leaning in until their lips were a breath apart. "Your sanity is gone now. You’re stuck with me."

"I think I can live with that," Mimi whispered, before closing the gap and losing herself in him once again.

Outside, the gates were locked, the security cameras were humming, and the world was kept at bay. In here, there was no social media coordinator and no superstar footballer. There was just Jamal and his Mimi, finally exactly where they were meant to be.
