Loving family
The Hemodynamics of Desire
The human pelvic vasculature during the fourteenth week of gestation was, by any clinical standard, an anatomical marvel of low-resistance, high-volume blood flow.
Izzie Stevens knew the numbers by heart. Uterine blood flow increased from fifty milliliters per minute in a non-pregnant state to nearly five hundred. The ovarian and uterine arteries dilated into wide, pulsating conduits; the venous plexuses engorged with oxygenated warmth; and every superficial nerve ending across the vulvar and clitoral bed became an exquisitely sensitive, hypersensitive biological tripwire.
What the obstetrics textbooks neglected to mention was that this profound hyper-perfusion turned a thirty-year-old surgical Chief Resident into a ravenous, impatient, and utterly relentless predator.
It was two-fifteen on a Thursday afternoon, and Izzie was standing in the dim, cramped confines of Call Room 4 on the surgical floor of Seattle Grace, staring at George O'Malley like she was going to peel him like an orange.
"Izzie," George whispered, his back pressed flat against the closed, locked door, his wire-rimmed glasses slightly askew, his wire-stiff trauma scrubs trembling just a fraction. "We have twelve minutes before the morbidity and mortality conference. Hunt is presenting the blunt hepatic laceration from Tuesday. I am supposed to advance the slides."
"To hell with Hunt's slides," Izzie said.
Her voice was not her crisp, administrative soprano. It was low, raspy, and carried the dangerous, velvet authority of a woman whose patience had expired three hours ago somewhere between grand rounds and a laparoscopic appendectomy.
She took two deliberate steps toward him. Beneath her dark navy scrubs—cut roomy enough to accommodate the blossoming, rounded curve of her fourteen-week bump—her breath came in short, shallow puffs that lifted her fleece vest. Her skin was flushed, radiant with that terrifying second-trimester bloom, a high, hot pink staining her collarbones and the hollow of her throat.
"Izzie," George tried again, his throat working as he swallowed, though his hands had already left his sides to hover near her hips. "You had a pelvic exam with Addison yesterday. She said your cervix was long and closed, but she also said—"
"She said my pelvic floor was remarkably toned and that sexual intercourse during the second trimester promotes endorphin release and maternal psychological well-being," Izzie quoted with rapid-fire, surgical accuracy. She closed the distance between them, planting her palms flat against George's chest, right over his beating heart. She leaned in until her lips brushed the warm skin beneath his ear. "George Gerard O'Malley. If you do not touch me in the next five seconds, I am going to reassign your next three trauma rotations to the burn debridement tank."
A soft, breathless gasp hitched in George's throat.
His eyes, wide and clear behind his lenses, darkened with an answering, helpless heat. He had spent three years learning how to command a trauma bay—how to cut into pericardiums, how to clamp femoral arteries with bare hands—but under the fierce, demanding heat of Izzie Stevens, all his intern hesitations simply burned away.
"You're bossy when you're pregnant," George murmured, his voice dropping into that smooth, confident register that always made Izzie's toes curl.
"I am the Chief Resident, and I have five hundred milliliters of arterial blood rushing to my lower pelvis every sixty seconds," Izzie retorted against his lips, her fingers tangling into the soft, curly nape of his hair, pulling him down. "Stop talking, George. Make me come."
George didn't ask again.
His hands, steady and strong with the diagnostic grace of a trauma surgeon, slid beneath her fleece vest, grasping the waistband of her ceil-blue drawstring scrub pants. With swift, decisive pressure, he yanked them down past her hips, taking her cotton underwear with them, pushing her back against the single call-room mattress until the edge of the cot caught the back of her knees.
Izzie fell back onto the thin vinyl, letting out a sharp, ragged moan as George dropped to his knees between her parted thighs.
He didn't hesitate. He knew her body—knew the curve of her Pfannenstiel scar, knew the hot, swollen petal of her clitoris, currently humming like a live electrical wire. When his warm mouth found her, his tongue sweeping flat and wet over her engorged center, Izzie’s heels dug violently into the mattress, her hips lifting off the sheets with a desperate, shuddering thrust.
"George—" she choked out, her fingers fisting in the coarse cotton of the bedspread. "Oh, God, George, right there—"
George groaned against her skin, his hands gripping her thighs, holding her wide, his thumbs massaging the sensitive inner line of her groin as his mouth worked with brilliant, rhythmic discipline. He wasn't gentle; he gave her the exact, firm friction her swollen nerves were screaming for, his tongue lapping at her with an urgent, generous hunger that took her breath in ragged, broken sobs.
Within forty-five seconds, Izzie’s entire pelvic floor seized in an explosive, bone-shaking climax.
Her back arched off the bed, her knuckles whitening, a high, strangled cry catching in the back of her throat as waves of hot, rhythmic contractions rippled through her uterus. The sensation was twice as intense as anything she had known before the pregnancy—thicker, heavier, pulling her marrow down into a deep, liquid abyss of pure nerve-firing release.
George stayed with her through every aftershock, his lips catching the hot, wet flood of her release, his breath ragged against her skin as the shudders slowly subsided into long, trembling gasps.
When he finally lifted his head, his face was flushed, his glasses were crooked, and his dark curls were damp with sweat. He wiped his lower lip with the back of his thumb, looking up at her with clear, worshipful blue eyes.
"Better, Chief?" George whispered, a wicked, triumphant little smile tugging at his mouth.
Izzie lay flat on the mattress, her chest heaving beneath her scrub top, her hand resting flat over the tiny, kicking pulse of the child beneath her navel. A slow, lazy smile broke across her features, her pupils still dilated, her skin gleaming with sweat.
"Adequate, Dr. O'Malley," she panted, her voice dripping with golden satisfaction. "Highly adequate."
The overhead pager clipped to George's belt suddenly shrieked: *TRAUMA BAY 1 – STATUS CRITICAL – CHEST TUBE STAT.*
George sighed, pressing his forehead against Izzie's bare knee for one lingering, exhausted second before scrambling to his feet. He adjusted his glasses, tucked his scrub shirt into his pants, and reached for the door handle.
"I have to run," George said, looking back at her with genuine, adoring regret. "Will you be okay to pull your pants up before the M and M?"
"I'll manage," Izzie smiled softly.
Then her eyes narrowed with a predatory, mischievous glint that made George pause with his hand on the deadbolt.
"George?" she purred.
"Yeah?"
"Tell Alex I need him in the supply alcove behind the pediatric clinic at four," Izzie said sweetly. "Tell him if he doesn't show up, I’m eating all the bacon from the dinner stew."
George let out a startled, delighted laugh that echoed off the door before he slipped into the corridor, leaving her warm, wet, and entirely unrepentant in the quiet room.
***
At three-fifty-five, the pediatric sub-specialty alcove was deserted.
The fourth-floor corridor smelled of lemon floor wax, pediatric antibiotics that tasted like artificial cherry, and the faint, ozone hum of an empty x-ray viewing box.
Izzie was sitting on an overturned plastic milk crate behind a stack of unopened diaper cartons, eating dried apricots out of a zip-top bag with methodical, rapid chews. Her scrubs were back in order, her gold Chief Resident pager rested firmly on her hip, but her body had already decided that forty-five minutes of post-orgasmic refractory period was entirely sufficient for a fourteen-week gestation.
The pelvic heat had returned, low, heavy, and simmering like a pot left on the back burner.
Heavy, hurried bootsteps echoed down the linoleum.
Alex Karev rounded the corner, his broad shoulders nearly clipping the steel shelving. He was wearing his dark blue pediatric scrub pants and a faded charcoal thermal undershirt, his lab coat hanging off one arm, his dark hair tousled and his jaw set in a hard, combative square.
"O'Malley said you paged a Code Red," Alex growled, his deep, gravelly voice dropping into the dim storage nook. He stopped three feet away, his dark eyes instantly sweeping over her posture—checking her color, checking her ankles, checking the steady rise and fall of her chest. "He said you looked like you were in acute metabolic distress. What happened? Did your pressure spike? Are you having contractions?"
Izzie set the bag of apricots on a box of hypoallergenic wipes.
She stood up from the milk crate.
Slowly, deliberately, she hooked her thumbs into the waistband of her scrub pants, rocking back on her heels. The golden afternoon light filtering through the small wire-reinforced window caught the high cheekbones of her face, the faint sheen of perspiration on her forehead, and the utter, shameless lack of medical emergency in her eyes.
"My blood pressure is one-ten over seventy, Karev," Izzie said, her voice dropping into a sultry, teasing purr that stopped Alex dead in his tracks. "And the only metabolic distress I have is an extreme, unmanageable deficit in testosterone."
Alex froze.
His dark eyes narrowed, his gaze flicking from her mocking, half-parted lips down to the loose drape of her scrub top over her rounded belly, and then to the small, damp patch of sweat at the base of her throat.
A slow, dangerous realization crept over his scarred face. His posture shifted from emergency surgeon to apex predator in the space of half a heartbeat.
"You're kidding me," Alex rasped, a disbelieving, wicked smirk slowly spreading across his mouth. "O'Malley had me sprinting up three flights of stairs from the NICU because he said you were hyperventilating."
"I was hyperventilating," Izzie said, stepping forward until her toes bumped the steel caps of his boots. She reached out, her hands sliding up the rough cotton of his thermal shirt, her fingers splaying wide across the massive, corded slab of his chest. She looked up through her thick lashes, her blue eyes molten. "George took care of the acute phase. Now I need the chronic therapy."
"Chronic therapy?" Alex echoed, his voice dropping into that scraped-gravel register that always sent a hot, liquid shiver straight to her core.
His hands, large, heavy, and scarred from a lifetime of fighting, came down to grip her waist. His fingers dug with firm, possessive pressure into the soft flare of her hips, pulling her flush against the hard, unyielding wall of his pelvis.
Izzie let out a low, helpless whimper as she felt the rigid, heavy outline of him pressed against her lower abdomen.
"You're shameless, Stevens," Alex muttered, his mouth hovering an inch above hers, his breath hot and smelling of black coffee and peppermint. "We’re in a public hospital. In a storage closet behind the NICU. If Arizona walks in here looking for preemie cannulas, she’s gonna throw both of us out of the fellowship program."
"Arizona is in surgery with a diaphragmatic hernia until six," Izzie whispered, her fingers curling into his hair, tugging his head down with impatient force. "And you have twelve minutes before the pediatric floor rounds. Now, are you going to lecture me on administrative ethics, Alexander, or are you going to remind me why I married a brawler from Iowa?"
"You asked for it," Alex growled.
He moved with terrifying, athletic speed.
He didn't bother with the milk crate. He spun her around, pressing her chest and forearms flat against a tall, heavy stack of sterile linen crates, pinning her between his immense weight and the metal shelving.
Izzie gasped, a scalding rush of heat pooling between her thighs as Alex’s heavy hand reached around her hip, his scarred fingers sliding beneath the waistband of her scrubs, yanking them down past her buttocks in a single, aggressive motion.
"Lean forward," Alex commanded into her ear, his teeth grazing the sensitive lobe, his rough stubble scraping against the soft curve of her jawline. "Keep your hands on the boxes."
Izzie obeyed without a second's hesitation, planting her palms on the plastic crates, her back arching, her hips tilting upward to meet him. Her heart was hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird—not from fear, but from the wild, exhilarating thrill of being entirely claimed by the man who had fought through his own ruined past to stand guard over her body.
Alex didn't wait. He freed himself from his scrubs, his fingers finding her slick, dripping cleft, spreading her with two blunt, knowing strokes that drew a choked, guttural cry from her throat.
"Look at you," Alex groaned, his voice thick with raw, feral adoration. "You're soaked, Iz. You’re completely soaked for me."
He drove into her with a single, deep, bruising thrust.
Izzie’s head fell back between her shoulder blades, a sharp, ecstatic scream muffled into the crook of her elbow as Alex filled her entirely. Her swollen, hyper-perfused vaginal canal clamped down around his thick length like an iron vise, the intense friction eliciting a guttural, ragged curse from Alex’s chest.
"Jesus, Iz," Alex panted, his hands locking onto the soft, rounded flesh of her hips, his fingers digging deep as he established a hard, relentless, pistoning rhythm that rattled the linen crates against the wall. "You’re so tight... it’s like you're squeezing the damn marrow out of me."
"Harder," Izzie begged, rocking her hips back against every stroke, demanding every inch of him, her body completely taken over by the biological fury of her gestation. "Alex, harder, please—"
Alex grunted, leaning his full two hundred pounds over her back, his chest pressing into her shoulder blades, his scarred knuckles whitening as he gripped the edges of the plastic crates. He drove into her with fierce, territorial power—the boy who had nothing, the man who had been given an empire, taking his fill of the woman who held his soul.
The second climax hit Izzie like a seismic rupture.
Her pelvic muscles spasmed around him in a rapid, milking cadence that was almost painful in its intensity. She shook from her collarbones to her toes, her knees buckling, only held upright by the iron clamp of Alex’s hands on her hips.
Her release triggered his own. With a low, ragged roar muffled against the nape of her neck, Alex buried himself to the hilt, his hips jerking violently as he spilled his heat deep inside her, his breath tearing out in ragged, broken sobs against her skin.
They stood locked together in the dim storage alcove, the linen crates vibrating softly as their combined, heaving breaths filled the quiet room.
Alex stayed buried inside her for a long, slow minute, his forehead resting against the back of her neck, his large hands gently stroking the curve of her waist, soothing the trembling that still rippled through her thighs.
"You're a maniac, Stevens," Alex whispered, his voice cracked and soft, his lips pressing a tender, lingering kiss to the sweat-slick hollow between her shoulder blades. "A literal medical menace."
Izzie let out a soft, breathless laugh into her sleeve, her hand reaching back to rest over his scarred knuckles on her hip, her platinum ring clicking against his.
"I’m an expanding organism, Karev," she murmured, turning her head to smile at him over her shoulder. "We have high caloric and energetic demands."
"Yeah, well," Alex smirked, slowly withdrawing and pulling her pants back up over her rounded hips with surprisingly gentle, reverent care. "Your energetic demands almost broke the shelf of preemie wipes. Now pull your vest down before Robbins catches us smelling like a cheap motel."
***
By seven-thirty that evening, the Queen Anne house was wrapped in the cold, wet silence of a Seattle rainstorm.
The streets were dark, slick with fallen fir needles, and the wind from Elliott Bay rattled the vintage bay windows with rhythmic, howling gusts.
Inside, the Victorian was an island of light and heat.
Louise had taken Leo Harold down to Tacoma for an overnight visit, promising three square meals of homemade manicotti and an uninterrupted screening of animated tugboat movies.
For the first time in four months, the second floor was completely, miraculously empty of crying toddlers, medical pagers, and surgical charts.
Izzie stood in the center of the master bedroom, wearing an oversized white linen button-down shirt that belonged to Alex. The hem barely brushed the middle of her thighs, leaving her long, pale legs bare. The top three buttons were undone, revealing the flushed swell of her breasts—heavy, tender, and laced with delicate, visible blue veins that mapped the expanding vascular network beneath her skin.
On the king-sized bed, George was stretched out against the headboard in a pair of soft gray flannel pajama pants, holding a paperback trauma textbook that he had not turned a page of in twenty minutes.
His eyes were completely fixed on Izzie.
Alex sat on the edge of the mattress, stripped to his black boxer briefs, his massive, heavily muscled back hunched forward as he unlaced his running shoes. When he stood up, his dark eyes swept over Izzie’s bare legs, the loose drape of the linen over her belly, and the unmistakable, predatory glint in her blue eyes.
"Oh, no," Alex muttered, holding up both hands in mock self-defense, a slow, wicked grin spreading across his stubbled jaw. "No way, Stevens. I gave at the office. My quads are shot, and I have fifty-four pediatric charts to review before six AM."
Izzie didn't answer with words.
She reached up, took the tails of the linen shirt, and slowly unbuttoned the remaining four buttons, letting the fabric fall off her shoulders to pool on the hardwood floorboards.
She stood before them entirely naked in the warm amber glow of the bedside lamps.
Her body was no longer the lean, razor-sharp physique of a fifth-year surgical resident. It was changing—expanding with the soft, magnificent, fertile curve of motherhood.
Her belly was distinctly rounded now, the fourteen-week fundus rising proudly above the silver line of her Pfannenstiel scar. Her hips were broader, her waist fuller, and the dark, sensitive aureoles of her breasts were swollen with the miraculous preparation of life.
The room went dead silent.
George’s textbook slipped from his fingers, falling onto the duvet with a dull *thump*. His breath caught in his throat, his blue eyes widening behind his glasses with a pure, unarmored reverence that made Izzie’s chest ache with tenderness.
Alex stopped breathing entirely.
His scarred hands dropped to his sides, his throat working as he swallowed, his dark eyes tracking every millimeter of her skin with an intensity that bordered on religious worship.
"Look at you," George whispered, his voice trembling with awe as he scrambled to his knees on the mattress. "Izzie... you are the most beautiful thing I have ever seen in my life."
"Don't just stare at me, O'Malley," Izzie commanded softly, her voice thick and trembling with that insatiable, aching hunger. "I spent the last two hours in the car with Alex's hand on my thigh, and if neither of you takes this bed, I am going to lose my mind."
George didn't wait for permission.
He reached out, his hands catching Izzie’s wrists, pulling her gently onto the center of the mattress.
Izzie sank into the down duvet with a low, contented moan, her knees parting instinctively, but before she could pull George down, Alex was there.
Alex climbed onto the bed behind her, his massive, heated frame settling against her back, his heavy thighs framing hers. His arms wrapped around her rib cage, pulling her back against his broad chest, his rough cheek pressing into the curve of her neck as his hands came down to cover her swollen belly.
"You're not choosing tonight, Stevens," Alex growled into her ear, his gravelly voice sending a wave of goosebumps down her spine. "You want the rotation? You get the whole damn team."
Izzie gasped as George moved between her parted thighs, his hands sliding up the back of her calves, his thumbs resting against the soft skin behind her knees.
The contrast between the two men was intoxicating: behind her, the immovable, protective furnace of Alex’s body, his heartbeat rumbling through her back like thunder; before her, the steady, worshipful grace of George, his clear blue eyes locked onto hers with absolute devotion.
"George," Izzie whimpered, her hips shifting restlessly against the mattress. "Please."
"I've got you, Iz," George murmured softly.
He didn't rush. With infinite patience, George leaned forward, his hands sliding beneath her lower back to elevate her hips slightly, ensuring the angle supported her lower pelvis without straining the delicate uterine ligaments. He guided himself to her entrance, slick with the continuous, abundant moisture of her second trimester, and slid inside her with a slow, agonizingly smooth stroke.
Izzie cried out, her head falling back against Alex’s shoulder as George filled her.
The fullness was exquisite—steady, deep, stretching her swollen tissues with a sweet, burning ache that made her toes curl into the linen.
"Look at me, Izzie," George whispered, his voice steady and calm despite the flush darkening his neck. He began to move with a rhythmic, measured cadence, his thrusts slow, deliberate, and perfectly targeted to graze the sensitive anterior wall of her G-spot. "Stay with me."
"Alex—" Izzie gasped, turning her face into the crook of Alex’s neck, her teeth grazing his collarbone as the pleasure began to mount with terrifying speed.
Alex held her tight, his scarred hand sliding down from her ribs to tangle with George’s fingers on her hip. With his other hand, Alex reached around her front, his thumb finding the swollen, throbbing bud of her clitoris, rubbing it with a steady, circular friction that synchronized perfectly with George’s thrusts.
"I’m right here, baby," Alex rasped into her hair, his breath hot and ragged against her temple. "We’ve got you. Let it go."
Caught between George’s deep, rhythmic strokes and Alex’s relentless, knowing thumb, Izzie stood no chance.
The third climax of the day tore through her with the force of an avalanche.
Her vision went white, her back arching violently into Alex’s chest, her vocal cords letting out a long, ragged, melodic cry that echoed through the quiet house. Her inner muscles clamped down around George with convulsive, milking strength, pulling him deeper, demanding everything he had.
George let out a sharp, choked gasp, his rhythm breaking as her contractions triggered his own release. He buried himself to the hilt, his forehead dropping against Izzie’s shoulder, his breath hitching in his chest as he spilled his warmth deep inside her, his body trembling with the profound, exhausting release of an honest man who loved with everything he had.
Izzie slumped against Alex’s chest, her breath coming in ragged, shallow heaves, her skin glowing with sweat in the cool bedroom air.
George slowly withdrew, pressing a soft, lingering kiss to Izzie’s inner knee before shifting onto his side beside them, his arm immediately wrapping around Izzie’s waist, pulling her hips against his belly.
"You okay, Iz?" George murmured, his chest heaving, his fingers gently brushing a damp strand of gold away from her forehead.
"I’m... floating," Izzie whispered, her eyes half-closed, her voice slurred with the deep, narcotic hum of oxytocin and endorphins.
Then, she felt the massive, heavy ridge of Alex’s erection pressed hard against the small of her back.
She turned her head slowly, looking over her shoulder.
Alex was staring at the ceiling, his jaw clenched, his throat working as he tried to regulate his breathing, his hands still resting protective and warm over the curve of her belly.
Izzie smiled—a slow, wicked, entirely unexhausted smile.
"Karev," she purred.
Alex groaned, squeezing his eyes shut. "Izzie, have mercy. You’ve had three orgasms in five hours. You’re gonna induce labor."
"I am fourteen weeks, Alex, the oxytocin receptors in my myometrium haven't even fully expressed themselves yet," Izzie said, shifting her weight onto her knees, turning within the circle of their bodies until she was straddling Alex’s muscular thighs.
She looked down at him, her breasts heavy and swaying slightly with her breath, her belly prominent and proud above his pelvis, her blue eyes blazing with a fierce, magnificent demand.
"And besides," Izzie murmured, leaning down until her lips brushed the rough stubble of his jaw, "it’s your turn in the rotation."
Alex opened his eyes.
He looked up at her—at the woman who had survived the trailer park, who had survived the C-section, who was currently carrying their future beneath her heart—and the last shred of his resistance simply disintegrated into the sheets.
"You're gonna be the death of me, Stevens," Alex growled, his hands reaching up to grip her hips with iron certainty.
He didn't let her set the pace.
Alex lifted her with effortless, brute strength, guiding his broad, heavy tip to her entrance and sinking her down onto him in one long, breathtaking descent.
Izzie let out a high, gasping shriek of pure, unadulterated pleasure as he filled her to the absolute limit.
Her hands came down flat against his muscular chest, her fingers digging into his skin, her back arching as Alex began to thrust upward from the mattress with powerful, demanding strokes.
George sat up behind her, his chest pressing against her back, his arms coming around her waist to support her weight, his hands gently holding the base of her belly so the movement didn't jar the baby.
"I’ve got your back, Iz," George whispered into her shoulder, kissing the curve of her spine as Alex drove into her from below.
"George... Alex..." Izzie wept, completely lost in the overwhelming, sensory symphony of their bodies.
Beneath her, Alex was a relentless force of nature, his dark eyes locked onto hers with a fierce, possessive love that asked for no quarter; behind her, George was the immovable, gentle pillar that kept her upright and safe.
The final orgasm was not just physical.
It was an emotional, structural rupture that shattered every remaining wall in Izzie’s soul.
She cried out their names—both of them, tangled together in a single, breathless, holy breath—as her body convulsed around Alex’s length, the contractions rippling from her core outward until her entire frame shook like a leaf in an autumn storm.
Alex’s control snapped.
With a low, animal roar that vibrated against her thighs, Alex drove upward one last time, holding her pinned against his hips as he emptied himself deep inside her, his broad chest heaving, his scarred knuckles locking into her hips until the room finally, mercifully, went still.
***
By ten-thirty, the master bedroom smelled of lavender oil, salt, sex, and warm rain.
The bedside lamps had been dimmed to a soft, amber glow.
In the center of the vast king-sized mattress, the heavy goose-down duvet had been pulled up to their chests, tucking the three of them into a warm, impenetrable cocoon.
Izzie lay sprawled between them, completely limp, her head resting heavily on Alex’s muscular right shoulder, her bare legs tangled inextricably with George’s flannel-clad thighs. Her golden hair was spread like a bright halo across the white pillows, her face flushed with a deep, peaceful exhaustion that had finally silenced the biological fury in her veins.
George was lying on his side, his glasses folded on the nightstand, his left arm draped securely over Izzie’s waist, his fingers resting flat and warm over the slight, rhythmic movement beneath her navel.
Alex was on her other side, his heavy arm wrapped around her shoulders, holding her flush against his ribs. His other hand was resting over George’s on her lower belly, their matching brushed platinum bands clicking softly together with every breath.
"Well," George murmured softly into the quiet room, his voice raspy and thick with sleep. "Addison was right."
Izzie let out a soft, sleepy hum against Alex’s chest. "About what?"
"Maternal psychological well-being," George smiled, his lips pressing a tender, lingering kiss to Izzie’s bare shoulder. "You look completely stabilized, Chief."
"I am remarkably well-perfused," Izzie whispered, her eyes fluttering shut as a deep, luxurious yawn stretched her jaw. "My systemic vascular resistance has plummeted. I could sleep for twelve years."
Alex let out a low, rough rumble of laughter that vibrated straight through her ribs. He leaned down, pressing his lips to the crown of her head, his fingers tightening gently over her belly.
"You better sleep fast, Stevens," Alex rumbled, his gravelly voice filled with an adoration so vast it made the room feel small. "Because tomorrow morning at seven, Louise is bringing Leo back with six dozen homemade cannoli, and I have thirty-four pediatric charts with your name on them."
"Don't care," Izzie mumbled, snuggling deeper into the heat between them, her hand drifting down to cover both of theirs on her stomach. "Have my husbands. Have my baby. The hospital can burn down."
"The hospital won't burn down, Iz," George whispered, his eyes closing as the warmth of the bed pulled him down toward sleep. "We run the schedule."
"We run everything," Alex agreed softly into the dark.
Beneath their hands, deep within the warm, sacred harbor of her body, the tiny, fourteen-week life gave a soft, rhythmic flutter—steady, strong, and perfectly safe within the fortress they had built with their own hands.
No cracks in the foundation.
No fear in the dark.
Completely, magnificently satisfied.
Held between the trauma surgeon with the steady hands and the pediatric fellow with the lion's heart, the Chief Resident closed her eyes.
And the family slept in peace.
