Maki and yuta have fun!

The Olfactory Threshold

The atmosphere in the Tokyo Jujutsu High training hall was usually defined by the sterile scent of floor wax and the metallic tang of cursed tools. Today, however, the air had curdled. It was a thick, invisible curtain that seemed to ripple every time Maki Zenin shifted her weight.

Panda stood at the edge of the mat, his black-and-white nose twitching with the rhythmic intensity of a Geiger counter. Beside him, Toge Inumaki had pulled his high collar so far up that only his furrowed brow and wide, watering eyes were visible. They were watching Maki and Yuta spar, though "sparring" was a generous term for the sluggish, heavy-handed exchange occurring in the center of the room.

"It’s getting worse, Toge," Panda whispered, his voice muffled by a surgical mask he had taped over his snout. "It’s not just a scent anymore. It’s a localized weather system. I think I can see the humidity rising."

"Mustard leaf," Toge agreed, his voice a strangled croak of distress. He clutched a bottle of industrial-strength deodorizer like a holy relic.

In the center of the mat, Maki was a portrait of strained ferocity. Her face was a mask of concentration, her jaw set so tight it looked like it might snap. Every few seconds, a low, tectonic rumble would emanate from her midsection—a sound that resembled a distant rockslide. Whenever she lunged, the movement was punctuated by a sharp, rhythmic *pfft-pfft-pfft* that echoed off the high ceilings.

Yuta, conversely, looked like a man in a trance. He was moving with a fluid, almost dreamy grace, his eyes locked onto Maki with an intensity that bordered on the fanatical. He didn't seem to notice the way the air around them had turned into a humid, sulfurous soup of fermented protein and raw biological waste. In fact, every time Maki let out a particularly pungent blast, Yuta seemed to inhale deeper, his movements becoming more energized, his cheeks flushing a deep, frantic pink.

"How’s your footwork, Okkotsu?" Maki growled, her voice straining against the pressure building in her lower gut.

"It’s... it’s perfect, Maki-san," Yuta panted. He stepped into her guard, his nostrils flaring as he caught the full, concentrated brunt of a long, sputtering release that tore through the fabric of her leggings.

*BRRRRRRRRRRR-T-T-T-T!*

The sound was gargantuan, a wet, vibrating roar that caused Panda to visibly flinch. The scent hit the perimeter a second later—a dense, suffocating wave of rot and fermented natto that felt like a physical weight. It was the smell of a body in total internal collapse, a raw, primal odor that turned the stomach of anyone within twenty feet.

"Oh, sweet mercy," Panda groaned, swaying on his feet. "That one had a soul. I think I just lost three years of my lifespan."

Toge didn't speak; he simply turned and walked toward the exit, his shoulders shaking with the effort of not vomiting.

"Wait, Toge! Don't leave me in the impact zone!" Panda scrambled after him, but he stopped at the door, looking back at the duo on the mat.

Maki was bent over, hands on her knees, her chest heaving. The sheer volume of the gas she was producing was beginning to take a physical toll. Another wet, squelching sound escaped her, followed by a heavy, humid hiss that seemed to go on for an eternity.

*Squelch. Phut. Hiss-s-s-s-s.*

The scent intensified tenfold, turning from a mere stench into a thick, fecal miasma that clung to the mats. It was the unmistakable smell of a digestive disaster, a dark and private shame laid bare in the middle of the afternoon.

Yuta didn't back away. He stepped closer, reaching out to steady her. His hands gripped her shoulders, and he leaned his head down, his face inches from the source of the latest explosion. He looked like a man who had finally found the air he was meant to breathe.

"Maki-san," he whispered, his voice thick with a terrifying sort of devotion. "Don't stop. Please."

Maki looked up at him, her glasses fogged, her face a mask of sweat and defiance. "You’re a freak, Yuta. You know they’re watching, right? You know they can smell it?"

"I don't care," Yuta said, his eyes dark and dilated. "Let them watch. They don't understand. They don't know how... how real this is."

Outside in the hallway, Panda and Toge huddled together, the door to the training hall firmly shut. They were both breathing through their mouths, their faces pale.

"We have to do something," Panda said, his voice trembling. "This isn't just about the smell anymore. Yuta is... he’s gone off the deep end. He’s looking at her like she’s a five-course meal, and she’s currently a walking biohazard."

"Salmon," Toge whispered, his eyes wide.

"We need a plan," Panda continued, pacing the hallway. "A way to break the spell. If we can just get Maki to realize how gross she’s being, or get Yuta to snap out of this... this atmospheric trance, maybe we can save the school from a permanent evacuation order."

Toge reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, silver whistle. He looked at Panda and gave a sharp, decisive nod.

"The high-frequency deterrent?" Panda asked, his eyes brightening. "It might work. If we can disrupt their focus, maybe the... the biological activity will subside."

They waited. The sounds from inside the hall had shifted. The sparring had stopped, replaced by the sound of heavy, rhythmic breathing and the unmistakable, wet *thworp* of Maki’s failing internal defenses. The scent was beginning to seep under the door, a stagnant, heavy tang that made the hair on Panda’s neck stand up.

"On three," Panda whispered. "One. Two. Three!"

They burst back into the room. Toge blew the whistle, a piercing, high-pitched shriek that sliced through the humid air. Panda brandished a pair of industrial fans he had snatched from the equipment closet, turning them on to full blast.

"Cease and desist!" Panda bellowed. "In the name of the Clean Air Act and the sanity of this institution, Maki Zenin, put a cork in it!"

The sudden intrusion broke the bubble. Maki jumped, her eyes wide with shock, the sudden movement causing a final, catastrophic release that echoed like a gunshot.

*CRACK-PFRRRRRRRRT!*

The sound was so loud it seemed to bounce off the walls, and the resulting cloud was so potent that even the industrial fans seemed to struggle. The scent was a physical entity now—a hot, humid blast of pure, unadulterated rot that filled every corner of the room in an instant.

Yuta spun around, his face contorted with a mixture of rage and ecstasy. "Get out! We’re in the middle of a session!"

"A session of what, Yuta?" Panda yelled, his voice cracking as he fought the urge to gag. "Biological warfare? You’re covered in it! The air is literally brown! Look at her, Yuta! She’s a disaster!"

Maki stood in the center of the storm, her face a mask of cold, hard fury. She looked at Panda, then at Toge, then at the fans that were currently blowing her own stench back into her face. The humiliation was absolute, but instead of retreating, she felt a surge of the old Zenin spite.

"You think this is a disaster?" Maki growled, her voice low and dangerous. She stepped toward Panda, her gut let out a long, low rumble that sounded like a warning. "You think you can just barge in here and judge me for a little gas?"

"A little gas?" Panda shrieked, backing away. "Maki, I can taste your breakfast! I can taste the natto! It’s in my fur! It’s in my soul!"

Toge was frantically spraying the air with deodorizer, but it was like throwing a cup of water at a forest fire. The scent of "Summer Meadow" mixed with the scent of "Maki’s Bowels" to create a new, horrifying aroma that defied description.

"Get. Out." Yuta said, his voice dropping to a Special Grade register that made the floorboards vibrate. He stepped in front of Maki, his cursed energy flaring, dark and oppressive. "Maki-san is training. If you can't handle the atmosphere, that’s your problem."

Panda and Toge froze. The sheer weight of Yuta’s intent was enough to silence even Panda’s bravado. They looked at the boy—the kind, polite Yuta Okkotsu—who was now standing guard over a cloud of toxic flatulence like it was a sacred treasure.

"He’s lost it," Panda whispered to Toge. "The fumes have rotted his brain."

"Kelp," Toge agreed, his voice a tiny squeak of terror.

They backed away, slowly at first, then turned and bolted for the door, slamming it shut behind them. The sound of their retreating footsteps echoed down the hall, leaving the training room in a heavy, pungent silence.

Maki stood still, her shoulders slumped. The adrenaline was fading, leaving behind the cold, damp reality of her ruined leggings and the overwhelming stench of the room. She looked at Yuta, who was still standing defensively in front of her, his chest heaving.

"They’re right, you know," she said, her voice a hollow rasp. "I’m a mess. The whole room is a mess."

Yuta turned to her, his expression softening instantly. He reached out and took her hands, ignoring the way his own palms were slick with the humidity of the room.

"I don't care what they think, Maki-san," he said, his voice steady and warm. "They only see the outside. They don't see how hard you’re working. They don't see the strength it takes to... to just keep going when your body is doing this."

He leaned in, his forehead resting against hers. The scent of her latest explosion was still heavy between them, a thick, fecal fog that would have driven any other man to the streets. But Yuta just closed his eyes and breathed it in, a small, contented smile touching his lips.

"It’s just you, Maki-san," he whispered. "It’s just you."

Maki felt a strange, terrifying warmth spread through her chest, a feeling that had nothing to do with the heat in her gut. She leaned into him, her heart hammering against her ribs.

"You're a real freak, Okkotsu," she murmured, her voice losing its edge.

"I know," he replied.

A final, quiet *pfft* escaped her, a soft exclamation point to the afternoon’s chaos. Yuta didn't even flinch. He just squeezed her hands and held her in the center of their private, stinking world, while outside, the rest of the school wondered if they should call the fire department or a priest.
