Mha Shapeshifter
The Weight of a Borrowed Soul
The morning air at U.A. High School was crisp, carrying the faint scent of rain and the distant, rhythmic thud of Eijiro Kirishima hitting a punching bag. Inside the Class 1-A heights alliance dorms, Ochaco Uraraka sat at the communal kitchen table, a single piece of toast on her plate and a calculator in her hand. Her brow was furrowed in deep concentration, a look usually reserved for high-stakes combat or a particularly difficult Quirk Counseling case.
"Carry the two... subtract the tax... and if I skip the vending machine for the next three days..." she whispered to herself, her thumb flying over the buttons.
"You’re doing that scary face again, Uraraka," Denki Kaminari remarked, sliding into the seat across from her with a bowl of sugary cereal. "The one where you look like you’re trying to divide by zero."
Ochaco looked up, her eyes wide and slightly glazed. "I’m just calculating the remittance for my parents this month, Kaminari. If I can shave off another five hundred yen from my grocery budget, I can buy my dad that ergonomic back brace he’s been eyeing."
"You’re a saint," Kaminari said, shaking his head. "I spent my last allowance on a limited-edition Pikachu hoodie. I have no regrets, but I also have no money."
Ochaco gave him a blunt, slightly pitying smile. "That’s because you don't have a budget, Kaminari. A hero needs to be strategic in all things, especially the wallet."
She stood up, clearing her plate with a practiced efficiency. Today was a big day. The third-year curriculum was shifting into "Inter-Quirk Synergy" training, and as the class's only shapeshifter, Ochaco was the centerpiece of the lesson. Her *Polymorphic Weightlessness* had become more stable, but the psychological toll of shifting was something she hadn't quite mastered.
As she made her way to Ground Beta, she found Izuku waiting by the gates. He was, as usual, muttering to himself while doing a series of air-kicks. Seeing her, he brightened instantly, his entire face lighting up in a way that always made Ochaco’s stomach do a localized Zero-Gravity flip.
"Good morning, Ochaco! Ready for today?" he asked, falling into step beside her.
"I think so," she said, though she sounded a bit uncertain. "Mr. Aizawa wants me to try a 'Chain-Shift' today. Mirroring multiple people in rapid succession to adapt to a shifting battlefield. It’s... a lot of frequencies to hold at once."
Izuku nodded, his expression turning serious and analytical. "The mental strain must be immense. It’s not just the physical change; it’s the shift in perspective. Every time you transform, you’re essentially rewriting your sensory input. If you do it too fast, you might experience identity lag."
"Identity lag?" Ochaco tilted her head. "Is that a real thing, or did you just name it?"
"A bit of both," Izuku admitted, rubbing the back of his neck. "I’ve been reading papers on shapeshifting quirks. There’s a risk of the 'Mirror Effect,' where the user begins to adopt the personality traits of the person they’re copying even after they shift back."
Ochaco thought of the way she’d barked at Monoma the other day while in Bakugo’s form. She’d felt that spark of genuine, explosive irritation long after she’d returned to her own skin. "I’ll be careful, Deku. I promise."
Ground Beta had been set up as a mock disaster zone. Hitoshi Shinso was there, representing Class 1-B, along with Shoto Todoroki and Tsuyu Asui. Aizawa stood at the center, his scarf fluttering in the breeze.
"Today’s exercise is simple," Aizawa announced. "Uraraka will act as the 'Variable.' The rest of you will engage in a four-on-one combat simulation. Uraraka, your goal is not to win, but to neutralize. You must shift to counter whoever is attacking you at that moment. If Todoroki uses ice, you shift to someone who can break it. If Shinso tries to brainwash you, you shift to someone with a sensory quirk that can detect his intent."
"Wait," Shinso said, squinting. "She can copy my Brainwashing?"
"If she can mirror your vocal cords and the specific neural frequency of your quirk, yes," Aizawa said. "Start!"
The battle began with a literal bang. Todoroki sent a wave of ice crashing toward Ochaco. Without a second thought, she reached out, touching the air where Bakugo had stood only moments before, tapping into the residual 'heat' of the class.
With a flash of pink light, she grew taller, her hair spiking. Her palms hit the ice, and a massive *Howitzer Impact* shattered the frozen wave into glittering dust.
"Too slow, Half-and-Half!" she yelled, the voice rasping and aggressive.
But Todoroki didn't let up. He followed with a burst of flame. Ochaco pivoted, her body blurring again. She shrank, her skin turning a mottled green, her tongue flickering out to catch a nearby lamppost. As Tsuyu, she swung herself out of the line of fire, landing gracefully on a vertical wall.
"Ribbit! Nice try, Todoroki!"
"She’s getting faster," Tsuyu noted from the sidelines, watching her own double move with eerie precision.
Then came Shinso. "Hey, Uraraka! Do you think you can really keep this up?"
Ochaco opened her mouth to reply, her mind still partially submerged in Tsuyu’s calm, logical temperament, but a warning bell went off in her head. She shifted again, becoming Shoji. Multiple arms sprouted from her sides, and her ears enlarged. She didn't speak; she simply sensed the vibrations in the air, tracking Shinso’s movement behind a pile of rubble.
But the 'Chain-Shift' was starting to take its toll. The world was beginning to look like a kaleidoscope. One moment she was seeing through Shoji’s multi-focal vision, the next she was feeling the icy chill of Todoroki’s right side. The frequencies were overlapping, a cacophony of souls screaming for space in her head.
"Uraraka, stop!" Izuku’s voice cut through the noise.
She turned, but she didn't see Izuku. She saw a target. She saw a challenge. She saw the boy who always stayed ahead, the one she had to surpass. The "Bakugo" frequency, fueled by the aggressive nature of the Explosion quirk, surged to the forefront of her mind.
She lunged at Izuku, her hands sparking. "Don't tell me what to do, Deku! I’ll win this on my own!"
Izuku didn't move to fight. He used *Full Cowl* to dodge her initial blast, but he stayed close, his eyes wide with alarm. "Ochaco, look at me! You’re not Bakugo! Drop the transformation!"
"I’m the best! I’m going to be Number One!" she screamed, her voice a terrifying blend of her own pitch and Bakugo’s gravelly roar. She sent a massive blast toward a nearby building, the recoil sending her skidding back.
Aizawa moved to intervene, his eyes glowing red, but he paused when he saw Izuku step into the blast radius.
"Ochaco!" Izuku shouted, grabbing her wrists. The sparks from her palms singed his sleeves, but he didn't let go. "The mochi! Remember the mochi!"
The sheer absurdity of the statement hit her like a bucket of cold water. The "Bakugo" frequency flickered, weakened by the memory of a strawberry-flavored treat and a quiet walk home.
Ochaco’s form began to ripple violently. She collapsed forward, her body shrinking and shifting through a dozen different faces—Ida, Momo, even All Might for a brief, flickering second—before finally settling back into her own brown hair and round cheeks.
She fell into Izuku’s arms, gasping for air. Her skin was burning, a feverish heat radiating from her pores.
"I... I lost it," she whispered, her voice trembling. "I couldn't find the way back to me."
Izuku held her tight, his chin resting on the top of her head. He didn't care about the training or the observers. "I’ve got you. You’re back. You’re Ochaco. Just Ochaco."
Aizawa walked over, his expression unreadable. "Simulation over. Midoriya, take her to Recovery Girl. Uraraka... we’re grounding the shapeshifting for a week. Your psyche needs to stabilize."
"I’m sorry, Mr. Aizawa," she murmured, her eyes closing.
The walk to the infirmary was a blur. Recovery Girl gave her a gummy and a stern lecture about the dangers of "mental dilution," then tucked her into a bed for a mandatory nap. Izuku stayed by her side, sitting in a plastic chair and scribbling in a new notebook—not about her quirk, but about her.
When she woke up a few hours later, the room was bathed in the orange glow of sunset.
"Hey," Izuku said softly, noticing her stir. "How are you feeling?"
"Like I’ve been through a blender," she said, sitting up slowly. She looked at her hands, half-expecting them to be green or explosive. "Monoma was right, wasn't he? If I’m not careful, I’ll just become a collection of other people’s pieces."
Izuku closed his notebook and leaned forward. "I thought about that while you were sleeping. And I realized something. When you were 'Bakugo' back there, you were using his moves and his voice... but you were doing it because you wanted to protect your progress. You were doing it because you were determined."
He took her hand, his thumb tracing the pads of her fingers. "Those aren't Bakugo’s traits, Ochaco. Those are yours. You’re determined, you’re fierce, and you’re incredibly brave. You didn't become him; you just used his 'volume' to scream your own feelings."
Ochaco looked at him, her heart aching with a sudden, sharp clarity. "You always know what to say, don't you?"
"I just know you," he replied simply.
A knock at the door interrupted them. Bakugo stood there, looking uncharacteristically awkward. He was carrying a small, crumpled paper bag.
"The nurse said you were awake," he grunted, not looking at either of them. He tossed the bag onto the foot of the bed. "The cafeteria was out of the good stuff. These are the cheap ones from the convenience store."
Ochaco opened the bag. Inside were two slightly squashed strawberry mochi.
"You heard what Deku shouted, didn't you?" she asked, a small, teasing smile playing on her lips.
Bakugo’s face turned a violent shade of red. "I heard a damn idiot shouting about sweets in the middle of a war zone! If you're gonna use my face to throw a tantrum, at least don't make it about food! It ruins my reputation!"
He turned on his heel and stormed out, though he didn't close the door quite as hard as usual.
Ochaco laughed, a genuine, bubbly sound that felt like it cleared the last of the "identity lag" from her system. She took one of the mochi and handed it to Izuku.
"Let’s share," she said. "A reward for the hero who brought me back."
They sat in silence for a while, eating the cheap, overly sweet treats. It was a simple moment, but for Ochaco, it was the most important transformation of the day. She wasn't a mirror, and she wasn't a hollow shell. She was a girl in an infirmary, sharing a snack with the boy she loved.
"Deku?" she asked after a moment.
"Yeah?"
"When I was shifting... I felt something in you. A frequency I didn't expect."
Izuku tilted his head. "What was it?"
Ochaco looked at him, her blunt honesty coming to the surface. "It was lonely. Even when you’re surrounded by all of us, there’s a part of you that feels like it has to carry One For All by itself. Like you’re still that Quirkless boy standing in the rain."
Izuku’s smile faded slightly, replaced by a look of profound, quiet surprise. "You felt that?"
"I did," she said, reaching out to squeeze his hand. "And I want you to know... you don't have to be that boy anymore. If you ever feel like the weight is too much, I can shift. I can be your strength, or your shield, or just a second pair of hands."
She leaned in, her forehead resting against his. "But mostly, I just want to be the person who stands next to you. As me."
Izuku took a shaky breath, his fingers intertwining with hers. "I’d like that, Ochaco. More than anything."
Outside, the stars began to poke through the darkening sky. The war was over, the rebuilding was ongoing, and the future was uncertain. But as Ochaco closed her eyes, she didn't feel the weight of a dozen souls. She felt the warmth of one. And for the first time in a long time, the reflection in her mind was perfectly, beautifully clear.
She was Ochaco Uraraka. And she was exactly where she was meant to be.
