Multiverse Tales

The Unkillable Rhythm

The flickering blue light of the holoscreen was the only thing illuminating the darkened bedroom. Outside, the multidimensional hum of the Sharp Gang’s headquarters provided a constant, low-frequency white noise, but inside the small sanctuary, it was quiet. Sterling Engeal sat propped up against the headboard of the bed, his athletic frame relaxed, while Kate Blakeour leaned against him, her head resting on his shoulder.

For Kate, these moments were still a novelty. After thirteen years of blood, sand, and the roar of Bestar’s arena, silence was a luxury she was still learning how to spend. The weight of Sterling’s arm around her was a grounding force, a reminder that she wasn't in BackCells anymore. She wasn't a prisoner; she was a woman watching a movie with a man who looked at her like she was the sun rather than a weapon.

The film they were watching was an old romantic thriller Sterling had unearthed from a digital archive. It was slow-paced, filled with tension and whispered dialogue—a stark contrast to the chaotic, high-octane lives they led.

Then, the tone of the movie shifted. The two leads, after an hour of near-misses and longing glances, finally collided in a dimly lit apartment. The music swelled, transitioning from a suspenseful cello to a rhythmic, pulsing beat. On screen, clothes were shed with frantic desperation. The scene wasn't graphic by the standards of some worlds, but it was intimate, raw, and prolonged.

Kate watched with a clinical sort of curiosity. Her upbringing hadn't exactly included "the talk" or exposure to romance; her understanding of physical intimacy was mostly limited to what she had seen in the rough, often violent culture of the pits, or the gentle, patient guidance Sterling had provided since they started dating. She glanced up at Sterling, wondering if he found the choreography of the scene as inefficient as she did.

She froze. Sterling wasn't looking at the screen with clinical curiosity. His jaw was tight, and his breathing had become noticeably shallow. Even through the fabric of his black and blue bodysuit, she could feel the sudden spike in his body temperature. His hand, which had been idly stroking her arm, had stilled, his fingers curling slightly into the mattress.

Kate sat up, shifting her weight to look him in the face. "Sterling?"

He jumped slightly, his blue eyes snapping toward her, wide and slightly glazed. "Yeah? Everything okay, Kate?"

"You’re vibrating," she said bluntly, her social awkwardness manifesting in her usual directness. She reached out, placing a hand on his chest. His heart was hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. "And you’re hot. Not the 'fire-power' hot, but... different. Are you sick? Did the dinner Champagne made have something weird in it?"

Sterling let out a strained, nervous laugh, rubbing the back of his neck. He pointedly looked away from the screen, where the actors were now entwined in a tangle of sheets. "No, no. I’m fine. It’s just... the movie is a bit intense, isn't it? Maybe we should skip to the next scene. Or turn it off. We’ve seen enough plot for tonight, right?"

Kate narrowed her eyes. She might be socially stunted, but she was a predator by training; she knew how to read a body’s physical cues. She followed his gaze down to his lap, where the tight material of his suit was being strained in a very specific way.

"Oh," Kate said, the realization dawning on her. She looked back at the screen, then back at him. "The people on the screen. They are doing the... the sex. And it is making you want to do the sex?"

Sterling’s face turned a shade of red that rivaled Kate’s magenta accents. "Kate, I—it’s just a natural reaction. I’m sorry. I didn't mean to make it weird. I know you’re still getting used to... well, everything. I don't want to push you or make you feel like you have to do anything just because a movie is playing."

He reached for the remote, his movements hurried. "Let’s just turn it off. I’ll go take a cold shower, or maybe go check on the perimeter sensors. I’m sure Dresden is up to something somewhere."

Kate reached out, her calloused hand catching his wrist before he could hit the power button. Her grip was firm, the same grip that swung a Buster Sword with deadly precision, but her touch was surprisingly gentle.

"Sterling," she said, her voice low. "You spend all your time taking care of us. Taking care of me. You talk me down when I want to kill people. You teach me how to be 'rational.' You’re the guidance counselor for a bunch of lunatics."

She moved closer, crawling into his lap so she was straddling him, her green pants rubbing against his thighs. She looked him dead in the eye, her green gaze intense. "If you are 'hot and bothered,' as Benny says, you don't have to go run to a shower. I am right here."

Sterling swallowed hard, his hands hovering uncertainly near her waist. "Kate, I love you. And I want you. But only if you’re comfortable. I don't want this to be because you feel like you owe me, or because the movie told you to."

Kate tilted her head, a small, rare smile tugging at the corners of her mouth. "I don't do things because people tell me to. I killed Bestar because I wanted to. I’m staying with the Sharp Gang because I want to." She leaned in, her nose brushing against his. "And I want to do this. I want to see you lose that 'heroic' composure for a minute."

She shifted, her weight pressing down on him, and Sterling let out a ragged groan that he couldn't quite suppress.

"Kate..."

"Hush," she whispered, mimicking the way he often soothed her after a nightmare.

She slid down his body, kneeling between his legs on the edge of the bed. Sterling watched her, his breath hitching as she reached for the zipper of his bodysuit. With a slow, deliberate motion, she began to peel the fabric back.

Kate was a woman of action, not words. She approached this with the same focus she gave to a duel, but with a newfound tenderness that only Sterling had ever managed to unlock. When he was finally exposed to her, she paused, looking up at him through her dark hair.

"Is this okay?" she asked, a flash of her old vulnerability surfacing.

Sterling reached down, cupping her cheek with a trembling hand. "It’s perfect, Kate. You’re perfect."

She leaned forward, her lips meeting him with a soft, tentative touch that quickly grew more confident. Sterling’s head fell back against the headboard, his eyes fluttering shut. His hands found their way into her hair, his fingers tangling in the dark strands as he let out a low, shaky breath.

The room seemed to shrink until there was nothing but the sound of his pulse and the warmth of her breath. Kate found a rhythm, guided by his soft sounds of encouragement. She enjoyed the power she had over him in this moment—not the power to hurt, but the power to provide pleasure. It was a different kind of strength, one that didn't require a sword.

Sterling’s hips bucked slightly, his muscles tensing beneath her. "Kate... wait, wait," he rasped, his voice thick with effort.

She pulled back, looking up at him with a questioning tilt of her head. "Did I do it wrong?"

"No," he gasped, reaching down to hook his arms under her armpits and hoist her back up the bed. "No, you did it so right that I’m about to lose it, and I want... I want to be inside you. I want to feel all of you."

Kate’s heart gave a strange, fluttery kick. She nodded, her hands moving to the hem of her magenta top. She pulled it over her head, discarding it onto the floor, followed by the wrappings on her arms. When she was bare before him, Sterling’s gaze softened, filled with a reverence that always made Kate feel like she was something precious rather than a survivor of a death camp.

He stripped the rest of his suit away, his tall, athletic frame a map of scars and muscle that mirrored her own. He moved over her, his weight a welcome pressure that pinned her to the soft mattress.

"You sure?" he whispered, his blue eyes searching hers.

"Yes," she replied, her voice steady. "Finish what the movie started, Sterling."

He entered her with a slow, agonizingly careful push, his eyes never leaving hers. Kate let out a sharp exhale, her fingers digging into the muscles of his back. It wasn't like the arena—there was no pain, only a mounting, heavy heat that seemed to radiate from where they were joined.

Sterling began to move, his pace steady and purposeful. He was a man who believed in balance, in harmony, and he brought that same philosophy to their lovemaking. He watched her face, reacting to every hitch in her breath, every small sound that escaped her throat.

Kate felt the walls she usually kept around her heart beginning to crumble. In the pits, she had learned to be stone. With the Sharp Gang, she had learned to be steel. But here, with Sterling, she was allowed to be water. She flowed with him, her legs wrapping around his waist, pulling him deeper.

The rhythm accelerated. The "hot and bothered" feeling Sterling had been trying to suppress exploded into a wildfire. Kate’s head tossed back, her eyes fixed on the ceiling as the sensations overwhelmed her tactical mind. She wasn't thinking about the next move, or the next enemy. She was only thinking about the way Sterling’s skin felt against hers, the way his name tasted on her tongue.

"Sterling!" she cried out, her voice cracking.

"I’m here," he groaned, his movements becoming frantic, his heroic restraint finally snapping. "I’ve got you, Kate. I’ve got you."

He surged against her one last time, a powerful, grounding force that sent Kate over the edge. She clung to him, her world narrowing down to the white-hot light behind her eyelids and the solid, shaking man in her arms. Sterling followed a heartbeat later, his body shuddering as he collapsed against her, his face buried in the crook of her neck.

Silence returned to the room, save for the sound of their heavy, synchronized breathing. The movie had long since ended, the screen showing a static menu that cast a soft, grey glow over them.

Sterling shifted his weight, rolling onto his side but keeping Kate tucked tightly against him. He pulled the duvet over their tangled limbs, his hand resting protectively over her heart.

"You okay?" he murmured, his voice laced with exhaustion and affection.

Kate took a long, shaky breath, the adrenaline slowly receding. She felt heavy, warm, and strangely peaceful. "I am... functional. More than functional." She turned her head to look at him. "That was better than the movie."

Sterling chuckled, kissing her temple. "I should hope so. Those actors didn't have the 'Unkillable Kate' to work with."

Kate was silent for a moment, tracing the line of a scar on Sterling’s shoulder. "Sterling? When you were 'hot and bothered'... why did you want to stop? Why did you want to go to the shower?"

Sterling sighed, his fingers tracing patterns on her arm. "Because I care about you more than I care about satisfying a temporary urge. You’ve had so much taken from you, Kate. Your childhood, your freedom, your safety. I never want to be someone who takes something from you. I only want to be someone you choose to give things to."

Kate processed this, her brow furrowing. It was a concept so foreign to the world she had grown up in, where everything was taken by force or traded for survival. To have someone value her agency more than their own desire... it was more overwhelming than the sex itself.

She shifted closer, burying her face in his chest. "I choose this," she whispered. "I choose you. Even if you have a weird attraction to dangerous women."

Sterling laughed, a bright, genuine sound that filled the quiet room. "I think I can live with that. As long as the dangerous woman in question doesn't stab me for hogging the blankets."

"I make no promises," Kate said, though she gripped him tighter.

As they drifted toward sleep, Kate felt a sense of belonging that no prison or arena could ever provide. She was still a warrior, still a woman with a Buster Sword and a grudge, but in the quiet dark of the multiverse, she was also a woman who was loved.

And for the first time in her life, she didn't feel the need to keep watch. She simply closed her eyes and let the rhythm of Sterling’s heart lead her into a dreamless, peaceful sleep.
