nh love story
A Morning Afterglow
– The soft morning light filtered through the luxurious curtains of the guest room, painting stripes across the crisp white duvet. Josie stirred, a languid stretch bringing a pleasant ache to her muscles. For a moment, she was disoriented, the unfamiliar surroundings a gentle jolt to her senses. Then, the memories of the previous night flooded back – the terror of Mark, the unexpected collision, Niall’s kindness, the boys’ welcoming embrace, and finally, the kiss.
– A blush crept up her neck as she remembered the warmth of his lips, the gentle pressure of his hand on her neck. It wasn't just a kiss born of adrenaline or comfort; there had been something more, a spark that had ignited in the quiet intimacy of the guest room. She touched her fingers to her lips, a small, knowing smile playing on them. This was indeed going to be an interesting stay.
– She pushed herself up, swinging her legs over the side of the bed. The room was still, peaceful. She glanced at the clock on the bedside table; it was just past nine. Considering the late hour she’d finally drifted off, it felt like a decent lie-in. A quick check of her phone confirmed no missed calls or messages from Mark, a small victory that eased some of the tension in her shoulders. Her old phone, the one Mark had given her, was still off, tucked away safely in her small handbag.
– After a moment’s hesitation, she decided to venture out. She needed to find a bathroom, and perhaps, more importantly, coffee. She slipped out of the room, careful to be quiet, and found herself in the hallway Niall had led her down. The apartment was still mostly silent, though she could hear faint murmurs from what she assumed was the kitchen.
– Following the sound, she found herself in a large, open-plan kitchen and dining area. Liam was perched on a stool at a marble-topped island, scrolling through his phone, a mug steaming beside him. Harry was leaning against the counter, nursing a cup of tea, his curly hair still delightfully disheveled from sleep.
– – Morning, sleepyhead, – Harry greeted first, his voice a low, morning rasp that was surprisingly appealing. He offered her a charming, easy smile.
– – Morning, – Josie replied, a little shyly, feeling her cheeks warm. – I hope I didn’t oversleep.
– Liam looked up from his phone, a kind smile gracing his features. – Not at all, love. We’re usually a bit slow on a Saturday morning. Want some coffee? – He gestured to a gleaming espresso machine.
– – Oh, yes please, – Josie said, her gratitude evident. – That would be amazing.
– As Liam began to expertly prepare her coffee, she noticed a faint, lingering scent in the air – something sweet and yeasty. – Did someone bake something? – she asked, a small smile playing on her lips.
– Harry chuckled. – That would be our resident baker, Niall. He’s been up since dawn, apparently.
– Just then, the man himself emerged from a pantry, carrying a tray laden with freshly baked scones and a pot of what smelled like homemade jam. He was wearing a soft grey t-shirt and track pants, his blonde hair still a little tousled, and he looked… utterly adorable. His blue eyes, however, snapped to her the moment she spoke, and a wide, genuine smile lit up his face.
– – Morning, Josie! – he exclaimed, his voice bright and cheerful, a stark contrast to the sleepy murmurs from the others. – You’re up! I was just about to bring you some breakfast.
– He set the tray down on the island, his gaze lingering on her for a moment longer than strictly necessary. Josie felt the familiar flutter in her chest. The memory of their kiss was still fresh, a warm ember glowing between them.
– – Scones? – she asked, trying to sound casual, but her voice was a little breathy.
– – My mam’s recipe, – Niall said proudly, pushing the plate towards her. – The best in Mullingar, if I do say so myself. – He then leaned closer, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. – Though don’t tell Liam, he thinks his mum’s are better.
– Liam, who had just handed Josie her coffee, rolled his eyes good-naturedly. – They are, actually. But we’ll let Niall have his moment.
– Josie took a scone, still warm from the oven, and bit into it. It was light, fluffy, and absolutely delicious. – Oh my god, Niall, these are incredible, – she murmured, genuinely impressed.
– Niall beamed, clearly pleased. – See! I told you!
– Suddenly, the apartment door swung open, and Louis and Zayn walked in, both looking surprisingly refreshed. Louis was already talking animatedly about a football match he’d watched online, while Zayn was quietly sipping from a mug.
– – Look who’s finally gracing us with her presence! – Louis announced, spotting Josie. – Sleep well, Josie?
– – Very well, thank you, – she replied, feeling a little self-conscious under their collective gaze.
– – Good, good, – Louis said, grabbing a scone. – Because we’ve got a bit of a situation to discuss.
– The lighthearted atmosphere shifted slightly. Josie felt a familiar knot of anxiety tighten in her stomach. – A situation? – she asked, her voice quiet.
– Liam, ever the pragmatic one, took charge. – We’ve been talking this morning, Josie, about… Mark. And your safety.
– Niall, who had been leaning against the counter beside her, straightened up, his easy smile replaced by a more serious expression. He subtly moved a little closer to her, a gesture that didn't go unnoticed by Josie.
– – We don’t want to alarm you, – Zayn said, his voice calm and reassuring. – But we think it’s best if we have a plan.
– – A plan for what? – Josie asked, her heart beginning to pound.
– Harry stepped forward, his expression serious. – A plan to make sure he doesn’t bother you again. Or, at the very least, a plan to keep you safe while you figure things out. We’ve got resources, Josie. Security, lawyers, people who can make problems… disappear.
– Josie’s eyes widened. She hadn’t even considered that level of intervention. Her life had always been about avoiding Mark, hiding, hoping he’d eventually give up. The idea of actively confronting him, of having powerful people on her side, was almost overwhelming.
– – I… I don’t know what to say, – she stammered, feeling a fresh wave of gratitude, mixed with a touch of fear.
– – Don’t say anything, – Niall said softly, reaching out and gently squeezing her arm. – Just know that we’re here for you. All of us.
– Liam continued, outlining their thoughts. – For now, the most important thing is that you’re safe. And here, you are. We’re rarely all in one place for long, but when we are, security is always tight. When we’re not, there are always people around.
– – But what about when you leave? – Josie asked, the practical fear surfacing. – I can’t stay here forever.
– – We know that, love, – Louis said gently. – But it buys you time. Time to breathe, time to think, time to make some decisions without constantly looking over your shoulder.
– – And we think, – Zayn added, – that you should consider pressing charges.
– Josie flinched. Pressing charges. The thought filled her with dread. The endless questioning, the reliving of traumatic events, the fear of Mark’s retaliation. – I don’t know if I can, – she whispered, tears pricking at her eyes. – He’s… he’s so manipulative. He always turns everything around.
– – We understand that, – Liam said, his voice empathetic. – And you don’t have to decide anything right now. But we want you to know it’s an option. And if you choose to go down that path, we’ll support you every step of the way.
– Harry nodded firmly. – We’ve seen what people like him can do. You deserve to feel safe, Josie. To live your life without fear.
– Niall’s grip on her arm tightened, a silent reassurance. His blue eyes met hers, filled with a deep, unwavering concern. It was a look that made her feel seen, truly seen, for the first time in a long time.
– – For today, – Niall said, his voice breaking the heavier atmosphere, – let’s just enjoy these scones. And maybe we can take you out for a bit? Get some fresh air?
– Josie looked at him, then at the other boys. Their faces, usually plastered across magazines and screens, were now filled with a genuine, protective kindness. It was almost overwhelming. – Thank you, – she managed, her voice thick with emotion. – Truly, thank you all. I don’t know what I would have done without you.
– – Nonsense, – Louis said, waving a dismissive hand. – We’re just being decent human beings. And besides, it’s not every day we get a new houseguest.
– The tension eased a little, replaced by a sense of camaraderie. Josie felt a fragile hope begin to bloom in her chest. She wasn’t alone anymore.
– After a surprisingly hearty breakfast of scones, fruit, and more coffee, the boys decided they needed some fresh air. It was a beautiful Saturday morning, crisp and clear. – We can’t exactly take you for a stroll down Grafton Street, – Harry mused, running a hand through his curls. – Not without causing a bit of a… kerfuffle.
– – How about the park? – Niall suggested, his eyes sparkling with an idea. – The one with the big lake. We can go in disguise!
– Louis immediately perked up. – Disguise! I’m in! I call the fake mustache!
– Zayn rolled his eyes, but a small smile played on his lips. Liam just sighed good-naturedly. – You lot are ridiculous. But it’s not a bad idea, Nialler.
– Soon, Josie found herself bundled into a large, oversized hoodie and a baseball cap, her blonde hair tucked away. The boys, too, had managed to transform themselves into surprisingly anonymous figures. Niall wore a dark beanie pulled low, large sunglasses, and a nondescript jacket. Liam had a similar get-up, while Harry sported a wide-brimmed hat and a scarf pulled high. Louis, true to his word, had found a rather comical fake mustache that kept falling off, much to Zayn’s amusement.
– As they navigated the streets, keeping a low profile, Josie felt a strange mix of exhilaration and unease. It was thrilling to be out, to feel the cool air on her face, but the constant awareness of Mark, of the need to hide, was a persistent shadow.
– They reached a sprawling park, less crowded than the city center, with winding paths and a serene lake. The boys, despite their attempts at anonymity, still drew a few curious glances, but no one seemed to recognize them definitively.
– They walked for a while, the conversation light and easy. Niall stayed close to Josie, his presence a comforting warmth beside her. He pointed out different trees, talked about his childhood memories of the park, and asked her about her own. He was genuinely interested, and Josie found herself opening up, sharing small anecdotes about her life before Mark had cast his dark shadow.
– At one point, Louis started chasing a flock of pigeons, much to the amusement of a few children and the exasperation of Liam. Harry and Zayn found a quiet bench by the lake, engaged in a deep conversation about something Josie couldn’t quite make out.
– Niall led her to a secluded spot under a weeping willow, its branches creating a natural, leafy canopy. They sat down on a mossy patch, the gentle rustle of leaves and the distant chirping of birds the only sounds.
– – This is nice, – Josie said, taking a deep breath of the fresh air. – I haven’t felt this relaxed in… I don’t even know how long.
– Niall turned to her, his sunglasses pushed up on his head, revealing those piercing blue eyes. – Good. That’s what we want for you. Peace.
– He reached out, his hand hesitantly hovering over hers, before gently taking it. His fingers interlaced with hers, a small, electric current passing between them. Josie’s heart quickened.
– – About last night, – Niall began, his voice a little softer, a little more serious. – The kiss.
– Josie held her breath, her gaze fixed on their joined hands. – Yes?
– – I… I shouldn’t have, – he said, a frown creasing his brow. – Not with everything going on. You’re vulnerable, and I didn’t want to take advantage of that.
– Josie looked up, meeting his eyes. A pang of disappointment went through her, quickly followed by a surge of defiance. – You didn’t, Niall, – she said, her voice firm. – I wanted it. I wouldn’t have let you if I didn’t.
– His eyes searched hers, a mixture of surprise and relief in their depths. – You did?
– – Yes, – she confessed, a shy smile gracing her lips. – I did. It was… nice. More than nice.
– A slow smile spread across Niall’s face, chasing away the earlier worry. He squeezed her hand gently. – Good. Because I wanted to. More than you know.
– He leaned closer, his gaze dropping to her lips, just as it had the night before. Josie’s breath hitched. This time, there was no fear, no urgency, just a quiet anticipation.
– – Can I? – he whispered, his eyes asking for permission.
– Josie nodded, a silent invitation.
– He closed the distance between them, his lips meeting hers in a soft, tender kiss. It was a slow, deliberate kiss, filled with unspoken emotions and a blossoming connection. His hand moved from hers to cup her cheek, his thumb gently stroking her skin. Josie responded instinctively, her free hand coming up to rest on his chest, feeling the steady beat of his heart against her palm.
– The kiss deepened, a gentle exploration that sent shivers down her spine. It wasn’t a frantic, desperate kiss, but one that spoke of comfort, of understanding, of a quiet promise. When they finally broke apart, both were breathless, their eyes shining.
– – Wow, – Niall breathed, his forehead resting against hers. – That was… something.
– Josie managed a small, happy laugh. – It was.
– He pulled back slightly, his blue eyes sparkling with a familiar mischievous glint. – So, does this mean I get to bake you scones every morning?
– Josie playfully nudged him. – Only if they’re as good as these were.
– He grinned, a genuine, joyful sound. – Deal.
– They sat there for a while longer, simply enjoying each other’s company, the quiet intimacy of the moment. The world outside, with its dangers and uncertainties, seemed to fade into the background. For the first time in a long time, Josie felt a sense of peace, a glimmer of happiness that felt almost foreign. With Niall by her side, with the unexpected kindness of his friends, she dared to hope that maybe, just maybe, everything was going to be alright. This safe haven, this new spark, was more than she could have ever dreamed of. It was a beginning.
