Our Shades of Black and Red

The Alchemy of Betrayal and the Weight of Life

The silence in the Zenin penthouse was no longer the peaceful quiet of their French recovery; it was the pressurized stillness of a tomb. Yuji sat on the edge of the massive bed, his fingers trembling as they brushed over the small, amber plastic bottle hidden beneath the mattress. He had been back in Tokyo for three months. Three months of Megumi’s "healthy" recovery, of soft touches and careful words. But Yuji had seen the way Megumi looked at him when he thought Yuji wasn't watching—the hunger, the desperation, the lingering grief for the life they had lost in the loading dock.

Yuji had found the stash of Project Izanami pills in a forgotten safe in Megumi’s study. He knew it was poison. He knew it was the very thing that had turned his life into a clinical experiment. But in a moment of warped, trauma-induced logic, Yuji had convinced himself that if he could give Megumi back what was lost—on his own terms—then maybe the ghosts would finally stop screaming. He had been taking them in secret, his body once again warping under the influence of synthetic sorcery and hormonal catalysts.

Today, the test had come back positive.

When Megumi entered the bedroom, the scent of expensive rain and cedar followed him. He looked tired, the weight of the rebuilt Zenin empire pressing into the sharp lines of his face. He began to unbutton his shirt, his eyes softening as they landed on Yuji.

"You're still up," Megumi murmured, walking toward him. "I told you to rest. Shoko said your levels were finally—"

"I’m pregnant, Megumi."

The words dropped like a guillotine. Megumi froze, one hand still gripping the lapel of his shirt. The warmth in his eyes vanished, replaced by an icy, jagged terror that quickly curdled into a white-hot fury Yuji had never seen.

"What did you say?" Megumi’s voice was a dangerous, low vibration.

"I took the pills," Yuji whispered, his voice cracking as he held up the amber bottle. "The Izanami project. I found them. I wanted... I thought if we had it back, you’d be—"

"You thought what?" Megumi roared, the sound echoing off the marble walls. He lunged forward, snatching the bottle from Yuji’s hand and hurling it across the room. It shattered against a mirror, glass raining down like diamonds. "I spent months trying to scrub the blood of our first child off my hands! I dismantled my father’s legacy so you would never be a lab rat again! And you go behind my back to do *this*?"

"I did it for us!" Yuji screamed back, standing up, his heart hammering against his ribs. "You look at me like I’m a ghost, Megumi! You haven't really touched me in weeks! I wanted to give you something to stay for!"

"I stayed for *you*!" Megumi hissed, stepping into Yuji’s space, his shadow looming large and predatory. "Not a biological tether. Not a science experiment. You’ve turned yourself back into a prisoner, Yuji. And I can't look at you. I can't even look at you right now."

Megumi turned on his heel, grabbing his coat.

"Where are you going?" Yuji cried, reaching for his sleeve. "Megumi, please! It’s raining, don't leave me here alone!"

Megumi wrenched his arm away, his eyes glowing with a dark, unstable light. "I’m going somewhere where I don't have to see the wreckage of my own mistakes. Don't follow me."

The door slammed with a finality that shook the floor. Yuji collapsed onto the bed, his hands clutching his stomach. The "miracle" inside him felt like a cold, heavy stone. He waited. He waited for an hour, then two, then three. The penthouse was a graveyard.

At 2:00 AM, the front door clicked open. Yuji scrambled to his feet, his heart leaping. Megumi stumbled into the bedroom, the stench of whiskey and a cloying, floral perfume clinging to him. He was disheveled, his movements sluggish and uncoordinated.

"Megumi?" Yuji approached him tentatively, helping him sit on the edge of the bed. Megumi didn't fight him, but he didn't look at him either. He simply fell back onto the pillows, his eyes closing instantly.

As Yuji reached out to pull off Megumi’s boots, Megumi’s iPhone buzzed on the nightstand. The screen lit up, illuminating the dark room. A notification from a contact named "Tsumiki-Substitute" flashed on the screen. It was a girl Yuji recognized from the old files—Megumi’s previous "favorite" submissive, the one who had been trained to mimic the warmth Megumi craved.

The message read: *"Tonight was what I needed, Master. Thank you for coming back to me. He’ll never be able to give you the submission you truly crave. I’ll be waiting in the red suite whenever you need to forget him again."*

Yuji felt the world tilt. The air left his lungs in a sharp, agonizing wheeze. He looked at Megumi—the man he had sacrificed his own body for, the man who had promised there would be no more secrets—and saw a stranger. Megumi hadn't just left; he had gone back to the very patterns of abuse and control that had broken them in the first place.

Megumi groaned in his sleep, his hand twitching. He looked peaceful, blissfully unaware of the way Yuji’s soul was fracturing.

*I am nothing to him,* Yuji thought, a cold, numb clarity settling over him. *I am just a vessel. A prize. A ghost.*

He didn't cry. He didn't scream. He simply walked to the closet and pulled out a heavy, dark coat with a deep hood. He didn't take any money. He didn't take his phone. He just walked out.

The rain in Tokyo was a freezing deluge, the kind that soaked through layers in seconds. Yuji walked down the deserted streets of Minato, his head down, the hood shielding his face from the neon glare of the city. He didn't have a destination. He just wanted to walk until the synthetic hormones stopped humming in his blood, until his heart stopped aching, until he was just another anonymous shadow in the rain.

He walked for miles, his shoes squelching in the puddles, his breath coming in ragged, white plumes. His mind was a blur of memories—the sunflowers, the handcuffs, the smell of lavender in France, and the shattering glass of the pill bottle.

He was crossing an alleyway near the docks when a black sedan pulled up, its headlights blinding him. Yuji squinted, raising a hand to shield his eyes.

"Yuji? Is that you?"

A man stepped out of the car, holding an umbrella. It was Yuta Okkotsu. He looked different—sharper, his eyes hidden behind a pair of spectacles, but the predatory aura was still there, lurking just beneath the surface.

"Yuta," Yuji whispered, his knees buckling.

"You're shivering, Yuji. You're soaked to the bone," Yuta said, his voice a silk-wrapped blade. He stepped closer, the umbrella now shielding Yuji from the rain. "Where is Fushiguro? Why are you out here alone in your condition?"

Yuji looked at him, his amber eyes vacant. "He doesn't want me, Yuta. He went back to her."

Yuta’s expression shifted, a dark, triumphant spark dancing in his pupils. He reached out, his hand resting on Yuji’s shoulder. "I told you, didn't I? He’s a monster who only knows how to break things. But I... I’ve been waiting for this moment."

Before Yuji could react, a sharp sting pricked the side of his neck. He gasped, his hand flying to the spot, only to feel the small plastic tab of a sedative patch.

"Sleep now, Yuji," Yuta whispered, catching him as he fell. "The King has abandoned his throne. It’s time for a new reign."

Back at the penthouse, Megumi bolted upright, his head throbbing with a rhythmic, alcohol-induced violence. He looked at the empty side of the bed, the blankets cold.

"Yuji?" he croaked, his voice raw.

He looked at his phone, seeing the message from the submissive. A wave of self-loathing crashed over him. He had gone to the club in a fit of rage, but he hadn't touched her. He had sat in the corner, drinking himself into a stupor while she whispered platitudes he didn't hear. He had been too weak to face the reality of Yuji’s choice, and in his weakness, he had driven the only thing that mattered into the night.

He scrambled out of bed, his eyes landing on the open closet. Yuji’s coat was gone.

Megumi grabbed his phone and dialed a number he hadn't used in months.

"Gojo. He’s gone."

"What do you mean 'gone,' Megumi?" Gojo’s voice was sharp, the playfulness completely absent. "I’m with Nobara and Maki at the agency. Choso is here too. We were just talking about coming over because Yuji wasn't answering his texts."

"We had a fight," Megumi whispered, his hand shaking so hard he nearly dropped the phone. "I left. I came back drunk. He’s... he’s pregnant again, Gojo. He took the Izanami pills."

A heavy silence followed. Then, the sound of a chair being thrown.

"You absolute idiot," Maki’s voice hissed in the background.

"If anything happens to my brother, Fushiguro, I will tear the Zenin Tower down with my bare hands," Choso roared, his voice muffled but lethal.

"Listen to me," Gojo said, his voice vibrating with authority. "I’m pinging his last known location. Maki, get the security feeds for the Minato district. Nobara, call Shoko. If he’s out in this rain with those hormones in his system, he could go into shock."

Megumi threw on a jacket, not even bothering with shoes. He ran to the elevator, his mind a chaotic storm of regret. *Please, Yuji. Please be okay. I’ll be better. I’ll be whatever you need.*

By the time the team converged on the alleyway near the docks, the rain had turned into a sleet-heavy gale. Nobara was the first to find it—a single, wet sneaker lying near a patch of tire tracks.

"He was here," she said, her voice trembling as she held the shoe. "But there are fresh tracks. A heavy sedan."

Maki looked at the tablet in her hand, her face turning ashen. "I just got the plate recognition from the street cam. It’s a shell company. Registered to the Okkotsu Group."

Megumi felt the air leave his lungs. He looked at the dark, churning water of the harbor, the shadows of the shipping containers looking like the teeth of a giant beast.

"He has him," Megumi whispered.

"And he’s not just going to hide him this time," Choso said, his eyes glowing a deep, bloody crimson. "Yuta has been building a reinforced facility in the Sendai district. He’s been planning this since the loading dock."

"We have to go. Now," Gojo commanded, his blue eyes flashing behind his glasses. "Megumi, stay in the car. You're too unstable."

"No," Megumi said, his voice returning to that cold, aristocratic steel that had built an empire. He looked at the team—the people who had survived the era of curses with him, the people who loved Yuji as much as he did. "I am the one who drove him into that car. I am the one who will bring him back. And this time, I’m not stopping until Yuta is buried."

The team moved with a synchronized, lethal efficiency, a ghost of the old jujutsu squads. They piled into the Zenin SUVs, the engines roaring to life as they tore through the rain-slicked streets of Tokyo.

Inside the lead car, Megumi stared at the shattered mirror of his own reflection in the window. He thought of the life inside Yuji—the tiny, fluttering heartbeat that Yuji had risked everything to create. He realized then that he didn't care about the submission, or the control, or the Izanami project. He just wanted Yuji to breathe. He wanted to see the sun in Yuji’s eyes one more time.

*I'm coming, Yuji,* he thought, his hand clutching the seat until the leather groaned. *Don't give up on me yet.*

But miles away, in a soundproofed room beneath a mountain of steel and concrete, Yuji Itadori woke up. He wasn't in a red room. He wasn't in a white hospital. He was in a room made entirely of mirrors, reflecting his own broken, tear-stained face back at him from every angle.

And standing at the foot of the bed, holding a tray of surgical instruments and a single white pill, was Yuta Okkotsu.

"Welcome home, Yuji," Yuta said, his smile wide and terrifyingly kind. "Let’s see if we can’t make this 'miracle' of yours a little more permanent."

The climax had arrived, and as the rain turned to snow over the mountains of Sendai, the King and the Rival prepared for their final, blood-soaked move.
