Our Wounded Hands Join Anew

The Echo of a Small Victory

The morning sun was far too bright for someone who had stayed up until two in the morning discussing the existential logistics of parenthood. Mizuki sat at the small kitchen table, blinking blearily at her phone. A notification shimmered on the screen—a text from Airi Momoi that was so densely packed with sparkling heart emojis and musical note symbols that it practically vibrated off the wood.

*“Mizuki-chan!! I’m heading to the big supermarket on the main street for a massive restock! Join me? I need an extra pair of hands and your impeccable taste in snacks! ✨💖🎶”*

Mizuki chuckled, her thumb hovering over the screen. Normally, she’d prefer to spend the morning curled around Ena like a vine, but Ena was currently a disgruntled pile of blankets, having woken up with the tell-tale cramps that signaled the start of her monthly cycle.

"Enanan," Mizuki called out softly toward the bedroom. "Airi wants me to go to the market with her. Do you need anything?"

A muffled, pained groan drifted through the door. "Pads. The ones in the purple wings box. And if you don't bring back chocolate, don't bother coming home."

"Understood! One rescue mission, coming right up," Mizuki chirped. She grabbed her purse, checked her reflection to ensure her ribbons were perfectly symmetrical, and headed out into the crisp morning air.

The main street was bustling, a stark contrast to the quiet sanctuary of their home. Mizuki spotted Airi immediately; the former idol was hard to miss, radiating an aura of energetic pink even in casual clothes. To Mizuki’s surprise, Airi wasn't alone. Clinging to her hip was a small toddler with pigtails that mimicked Airi’s own, wide eyes taking in the world with silent wonder.

"Mizuki-chan! Over here!" Airi waved frantically, her niece bouncing along with the movement.

"Good morning, Airi! And who is this little star?" Mizuki asked, reaching them with a wide smile.

"This is my niece, Hina. My sister needed a breather, so I’m on auntie duty today," Airi explained, looking slightly winded but mostly proud. "Hina-chan, say hello to Mizuki-san."

The toddler just buried her face in Airi’s shoulder. Mizuki felt a strange, warm tug in her chest—the conversation from the night before echoing in her mind. Without thinking, she reached out. "Here, let me help. You look like you’re about to drop your shopping list."

Airi looked relieved as she handed the child over. Hina was surprisingly heavy, a solid little weight that settled against Mizuki’s chest. Mizuki adjusted her hold, feeling the soft warmth of the child and the tiny, inquisitive hands that began to fiddle with the lace on Mizuki’s collar. It felt... right. It felt like a preview of a movie she desperately wanted to see.

"You're a natural," Airi noted, grabbing a shopping cart and pushing it into the sliding doors of the market. "Most people are terrified of toddlers."

"I have a lot of practice with high-maintenance people," Mizuki teased, thinking of Ena. "So, what’s on the agenda? Tactical snack acquisition?"

"Exactly. And ingredients for a celebratory dinner. Shizuku finally figured out how to use her new blender without causing an electrical fire," Airi laughed.

They moved through the aisles, a blur of domesticity. Mizuki navigated the cart with one hand while keeping Hina entertained with the other, making funny faces that eventually coaxed a tiny, bubbly giggle out of the girl. As they reached the household goods section, Mizuki scanned the shelves, her brow furrowing.

"Hey, Airi? Ena asked me to pick up some pads. The purple wings ones? Do you have any idea where they keep those? I feel like I’ve walked past this aisle three times and all I see is laundry detergent."

Airi stopped the cart abruptly, her sneakers squeaking on the linoleum. She turned to look at Mizuki, her expression a mixture of confusion and genuine curiosity. "Wait, Mizuki-chan. You’re looking for... menstrual pads?"

"Yeah? Ena’s having a rough morning," Mizuki replied, tilting her head. "Why the face?"

Airi hesitated, her voice dropping to a respectful, slightly hesitant whisper. "I mean... I don't want to be rude, or assume anything, but... don't you usually know where those are? Don't you use them too?"

The air in the aisle suddenly felt a little stiller. Mizuki felt that familiar, old tightness in her throat—the instinct to deflect, to make a joke, to hide behind a veil of mystery. But then she thought of the house. She thought of the "white" wedding in the field and the way Ena looked at her in the studio last night. The time for hiding was over. She wanted to live in the world as the person Ena loved.

Mizuki took a breath, leaning slightly over Hina’s head. "Actually, Airi... I don't get periods. I’m a trans woman."

Airi’s eyes widened. For a heartbeat, Mizuki braced herself for the awkwardness, the over-apologizing, or the clinical questions she had endured in her younger years. Instead, Airi’s face broke into a radiant, genuine beam.

"Oh! Mizuki-chan!" Airi reached out, squeezing Mizuki’s free arm. "Thank you so much for telling me! I had no idea, and I’m so honored you felt like you could say it. You’re so brave and wonderful, you know that?"

Mizuki felt a flush of heat creep up her neck, her bashfulness getting the better of her. "Ah, it’s not that big of a deal. I just... I didn't want to keep making up excuses for why I’m bad at finding basic hygiene products."

"Well, consider me your official guide then!" Airi declared, her idol-persona energy returning at full force. She pointed toward the far end of the store. "The 'feminine care' aisle is tucked behind the pharmacy section. It’s always hidden away like it’s a secret society. Follow me!"

As they walked, Airi kept talking, effortlessly weaving the new information into their friendship without making it the sole focus of Mizuki’s identity. "Ena is so lucky to have you, seriously. And you’re doing great with Hina. If you ever decide to have kids, you’re going to be an amazing mom."

Mizuki’s heart skipped. "You really think so?"

"I know so! You have the patience of a saint. I would have lost my mind ten minutes ago if she was pulling on my hair like that."

They found the purple box. Airi even helped Mizuki pick out the 'extra-long' variety because "trust me, on the first day, she’ll thank you." They finished the rest of the shopping, and after a round of goodbyes and a very sticky high-five from Hina, Mizuki began the trek back home.

The walk was different this time. The weight of the grocery bag felt light. She had come out to a friend—not under duress, not because she was backed into a corner, but because she simply wanted to be known. It was a small victory, but in the grand mural of her life, it was a stroke of vibrant, shimmering gold.

When she reached the house, the silence hit her immediately. Usually, there was the sound of a tablet pen clicking or a lo-fi playlist humming in the background. Today, the air was heavy and still.

"Enanan? I’m back. I brought the supplies and the chocolate," Mizuki called out, kicking off her shoes.

No response.

Mizuki set the bags on the kitchen counter and hurried upstairs. She pushed open the bedroom door softly. The curtains were drawn, casting the room in a dim, watery blue light. Ena was a small, trembling shape in the center of the bed, curled into a tight ball. Her face was pale, her brow pinched in a grimace of pure discomfort.

"Oh, my poor princess," Mizuki whispered, crossing the room.

Ena let out a low, pathetic groan, clutching a pillow against her stomach. "Mizuki... everything hurts. My uterus is trying to stage a coup."

"I know, I know. I’m here." Mizuki sat on the edge of the bed, placing a cool hand on Ena’s forehead. "I have the pads, and I bought those expensive truffles you like. The ones with the sea salt."

Ena opened one eye, looking up at her spouse with a mixture of gratitude and misery. "You’re an angel. Why am I the one who has to do this? It’s so unfair."

Mizuki smiled softly, smoothing back Ena’s bangs. "It is unfair. But I’m going to take care of you. I’ll go heat up the lavender compress, okay? And I’ll bring you some ginger tea."

As Mizuki turned to leave, Ena reached out a shaking hand, grabbing the hem of Mizuki’s sleeve. "Wait."

"Yeah?"

Ena looked at her, her gaze softening despite the pain. "Did you... did you have a good time with Airi? You were gone a while."

Mizuki paused. She thought about the supermarket aisle, the weight of Hina in her arms, and the easy way Airi had accepted her truth. She thought about the future they had mapped out in the dark of the studio.

"I had a great time," Mizuki said, leaning down to press a gentle kiss to Ena’s nose. "I learned that I’m pretty good with kids. And I told Airi about... well, about me. Being trans."

Ena’s eyes widened slightly, her grip on Mizuki’s sleeve tightening. "You did? How did she take it?"

"She was Airi," Mizuki laughed quietly. "She was loud, and supportive, and told me I was brave. It felt... it felt really good, Ena. Like I’m finally filling in the colors of the sketch we made."

Ena’s expression shifted into something profoundly tender. For a moment, her physical pain seemed to take a backseat to the pride swelling in her chest. "I’m glad, Mizuki. I’m so proud of you. I know how hard that is for you."

"It’s getting easier," Mizuki admitted. "Because I have this house to come back to. I have you. Everything else is just... background noise."

Ena pulled Mizuki’s hand to her lips, kissing her knuckles. "Go get the tea. And the chocolate. If I don't get sugar in the next five minutes, I might actually perish."

"Coming right up, my lady!"

Mizuki bounced down the stairs, her heart light. As she put the kettle on and organized the snacks on a tray, she caught her reflection in the darkened window of the kitchen. She looked like herself. Not a mystery, not a secret, not a puzzle to be solved. Just a woman in love, taking care of her wife, building a life one honest conversation at a time.

She carried the tray back upstairs, the steam from the tea rising in delicate curls. Entering the room, she saw Ena had shifted, making space for her on the bed.

"Mizuki?" Ena asked as she accepted the tea.

"Yes?"

"When I’m feeling better... let’s go look at those baby clothes. The ones you mentioned. The yellow socks."

Mizuki felt a lump in her throat. She crawled onto the bed, settling behind Ena and pulling her back against her chest, letting her warmth seep into Ena’s chilled frame.

"I’d love that," Mizuki whispered.

They sat there in the quiet of their shared sanctuary, the scent of lavender and ginger filling the air. Outside, the world continued its frantic pace, full of labels and judgments and barriers. But inside these walls, there was only the steady rhythm of two hearts, the promise of a future, and the beautiful, uncomplicated truth of who they were.

Ena sighed, her body finally beginning to relax under Mizuki’s touch. "You know, for someone who doesn't have a uterus, you're surprisingly good at this 'period support' thing."

Mizuki grinned, resting her chin on Ena’s shoulder. "Well, like I told Airi... I’m a couturier. I’m an expert at handling delicate fabrics and high-pressure situations."

"Shut up," Ena mumbled, though she was smiling.

"Make me," Mizuki teased, reaching for a chocolate truffle.

The laughter that followed was soft, intimate, and perfectly at home. In the grand gallery of their lives, this moment was a masterpiece—simple, honest, and painted in the brightest colors of love.
