Spirits Of A Life Lived
A Masterpiece of Ruffles and Dust
The morning air outside was crisp, carrying the faint scent of rain and city asphalt, but inside the Yugi household, the atmosphere was thick with the scent of lavender detergent and the looming threat of dramatic indignation. Nene had barely settled onto the sofa with a glass of lukewarm water when the doorbell rang with a series of sharp, rhythmic staccato bursts that could only belong to one person who gave Kou an experimental boyfriend status.
She groaned softly, pushing herself up with a hand on the small of her back. "I’m coming, I’m coming! Amane-kun, you really shouldn't have made him do this..."
When she pulled the door open, she was met not with a greeting, but with a flurry of pink fabric and a very sour expression. Mitsuba Sousuke stood on the porch, clutching a bucket of cleaning supplies as if it were a weapon of war. He was, as Amane had promised, wearing a maid’s dress—a frilly, white-laced monstrosity that looked suspiciously like it had been chosen by himself. And, admittedly, a part of Mitsuba felt quite comfortable in feminine clothing. His hips seemed to move naturally as he pointed a finger at Nene.
"Don't look at me," Mitsuba snapped, though his cheeks were flushed a deep, embarrassed crimson. "If you take a photo, I will haunt this house. I don't care if I'm alive now; I'll find a way to become a ghost again just to spite you."
Nene blinked, her lips twitching as she tried to suppress a laugh. "It’s good to see you too, Mitsuba-kun. Amane said something about a bet? You look so cute! Kou-kun would go absolutely crazy!"
For a moment, Mitsuba just stared at the daikon-legged girl, then processed the compliment. His demeanor shifted entirely as Nene stepped aside, his voice rising a pitch.
"Why, thank you!♡ He'll definitely wanna kiss me like this!"
"Eeeehhh~?!"
"What?! What did I say?!"
"N-nothing...! Come in, Mitsuba!"
Nene stepped back to let him pass, watching as the pink-haired boy marched into the foyer with all the grace of a runway model, despite the clanking of the spray bottles in his plastic caddy. The petticoat beneath his skirt gave him a voluminous silhouette that made him look like a very angry marshmallow.
"Honestly, that husband of yours is a sadist," Mitsuba grumbled, setting his bucket down on the hardwood floor with a sharp *thud*. "Who bets on the outcome of a meteor shower viewing? 'Oh, Mitsuba, I bet you five thousand yen that the clouds won't clear by midnight.' And of course, the heavens literally opened up just to spite me. He probably bribed a god. He used to be one, didn't he? Or a ghost-king-thing? Ugh, my life is a tragedy."
"Technically, he was just a school mystery," Nene corrected gently, closing the door and leaning against it to catch her breath. The baby gave a particularly sharp nudge against her ribs, making her wince. "But Amane-kun can be very competitive when it comes to things he likes. And he really likes astronomy."
Mitsuba huffed, adjusting the lace headband that sat perfectly nestled in his soft hair. "Well, he clearly likes seeing me suffer more. He said, 'Since Nene is eight months pregnant and I have to be at the gallery all day, you can pay off your debt by being her personal maid.' He even specified the outfit!"
"He did?" Nene’s eyes widened. "I thought you chose it yourself because you... well, you have such good taste."
Mitsuba paused, his hand frozen on a bottle of glass cleaner. He looked away, his ears turning the same shade as his hair. "Well... if I have to wear something humiliating, I might as well ensure the quality of the lace is top-tier. I have a reputation to uphold, even as a servant. Besides, the silhouette really accentuates my waist, don't you think?"
He did a quick, elegant twirl. The skirt flared out beautifully. Nene couldn't help but clap her hands together.
"It’s wonderful, Mitsuba-kun! You really do have the best fashion sense out of all of us."
Mitsuba preened, his ego instantly inflated. "Obviously. Now, sit down, Daikon-senpai. You look like you’re about to tip over. If you faint on my watch, Amane will probably haunt *me*, and I don't need that kind of negative energy in my skincare routine."
Nene allowed herself to be ushered back to the sofa. It was strange, seeing Mitsuba like this. In their school days, everything had felt so fragile, so temporary. The boundary between life and death had been a thin, fraying thread. Now, the sun was shining, the house smelled of home, and her friend was very much alive, complaining about dust and fashion.
"So," Nene said, watching as Mitsuba began to methodically wipe down the coffee table with a focused intensity. "How is Kou-kun? I haven't seen him since last weekend."
Mitsuba’s movements faltered for a fraction of a second. "The earring-pervert? He’s fine. Still loud. Still wears that stupid traffic-safety charm. He tried to tell me that the maid outfit was 'too much' when I showed him a selfie this morning, but then he turned redder than a tomato and tripped over his own feet. It was pathetic, really. He’s so easy to read."
Nene smiled, a soft, knowing look in her eyes. "He really cares about you, you know. He was so happy when you... when everything turned out okay."
Mitsuba stopped scrubbing and looked at his reflection in the polished wood. The bravado slipped for a moment, replaced by a rare, quiet sincerity. "Yeah, well. I guess I don't mind having him around. Even if he is a moron who can't handle a little bit of lace."
He suddenly shook his head, the pink locks swaying. "Anyway! Enough about him. Let’s talk about you. You’re huge! Are you sure there’s only one human in there? Maybe it’s a giant radish?"
"Mitsuba-kun!" Nene laughed, though she protectively cradled her belly. "It’s a girl. We’re naming her Tamaki."
"Tamaki, huh?" Mitsuba leaned back on his heels, his expression softening as he looked at Nene’s stomach. "Sounds like a name for someone who’s going to be spoiled rotten by two very weird parents. Does Amane talk to it? I bet he does. I bet he reads star charts to your stomach."
Nene giggled. "He actually does. Every night. He says he wants her to know the way home, even if she gets lost in her dreams."
Mitsuba rolled his eyes, though there was no heat in it. "Gross. You two are so sentimental it makes my teeth ache. But... I guess it’s better than the alternative."
The room fell into a comfortable silence, save for the rhythmic *swish-swish* of Mitsuba’s cleaning cloth. Nene watched him work, realizing that despite his complaining, he was being incredibly thorough. He moved with a domestic grace that suggested he actually enjoyed the order he was creating.
"Hey, Nene," Mitsuba said suddenly, not looking up from the baseboards he was now dusting.
"Yes?"
"Do you think... do you think we’re actually allowed to be this happy?"
Nene paused, her hand stilled on her glass of water. She thought of the dark hallways of Kamome Academy, the terrifying grip of the No. 4’s world, and the heartbreaking moment Amane had vanished into the light, leaving her behind. She thought of the years of longing, the miracle of his return, and the way he looked at her every morning as if she were the sun itself.
"I think," Nene said softly, "that we worked very hard for this happiness. And I think the world owes us a little bit of peace after everything. Don't you?"
Mitsuba stood up, wiping a stray smudge of dirt from his white apron. He looked at her, his large, expressive eyes shimmering with something that looked suspiciously like unshed tears, though he would never admit it.
"I guess so," he whispered. Then, his face snapped back into a pout. "But the world definitely owes me a new pair of shoes for this. These heels are killing me!"
"You chose the heels too?" Nene asked, amused.
"They complete the look! Honestly, Daikon-senpai, do you know nothing of aesthetics?"
As the afternoon progressed, Mitsuba transformed the Yugi household into a sparkling sanctuary. He vacuumed, he dusted, and he even reorganized the pantry, all while maintaining a steady stream of gossip about their former classmates and scathing critiques of Amane’s interior design choices.
"Why does he have so many books on lunar cycles? Does he think he’s going to fly there?" Mitsuba asked, shoving a stack of journals into a neater pile.
"He just likes to be prepared," Nene said, leaning back against the cushions. She was feeling drowsy, the warmth of the sun and the rhythmic sounds of Mitsuba’s work lulling her toward sleep.
"Prepared for what? A space invasion?" Mitsuba scoffed. He walked over to the sofa and looked down at her. His expression softened. "You’re tired. Go take a nap. I’ll finish the kitchen and then I’m leaving. I have a date with a very expensive parfaits and a very loud exorcist."
"A date?" Nene teased, her eyes fluttering shut.
"A meeting! A business meeting about... things!" Mitsuba protested, his voice rising in that familiar, defensive squeak. "Just sleep already!"
Nene smiled, drifting off to the sound of ruffles and the clink of dishes.

When Amane returned home later that evening, the house was silent and smelled strongly of lavender and lemon. He stepped inside, closing the door softly, and paused. The entryway was spotless. The hallway floor gleamed.
He walked into the living room to find Nene fast asleep on the sofa, a light blanket draped over her that he didn't recognize—it was pink and covered in small, embroidered cameras. On the coffee table, there was a sticky note written in flamboyant, looping script.
*The house is clean. Your wife is alive. You owe me ten thousand yen now because I had to buy extra-strength bleach for your 'aesthetic' dust. Also, tell Kou I looked better than the magazines. — The Cutest Maid in the World.*
Amane chuckled, a low, warm sound. He set his bag down and moved to the sofa, kneeling beside Nene. He reached out, his fingers gently brushing a stray lock of hair from her forehead.
"He really did a good job," Amane whispered, looking around the pristine room. "Though I suspect he enjoyed the outfit a little too much."
Nene stirred, her eyes opening slowly. When she saw Amane, her face lit up with that radiant smile that always made his heart skip a beat.
"Amane-kun... you're home."
"I'm home," he said, leaning in to press a kiss to her temple. "Did Mitsuba give you a hard time?"
"No," Nene said, reaching out to take his hand. "He was wonderful. He even cleaned the top of the fridge. I think he’s actually quite good at being a maid."
Amane grinned, his eyes flashing with mischief. "Don't tell him that. He'll start charging us a professional rate. How are you feeling? Did Tamaki behave?"
"She was very quiet while Mitsuba was talking," Nene said, pulling Amane’s hand to her stomach. "I think she was intimidated by his energy."
Amane laughed, resting his palm against the curve of her belly. He felt a faint, steady thrum—the heartbeat of his daughter, the physical proof of the life he had fought so hard to reclaim.
"I brought something for you," Amane said, reaching into his pocket. He pulled out a small, delicately wrapped box.
Nene sat up, curious. "What is it?"
She opened the box to find a silver keychain in the shape of a crescent moon, with a small, pink gemstone dangling from the center.
"It’s for the diaper bag," Amane said, a bit bashfully. "I saw it in a shop near the gallery. The stone reminded me of Mitsuba’s hair, and the moon... well, you know."
Nene felt a lump form in her throat. She looked at the little moon, then at her husband—this man who had once been a lonely ghost, who now spent his days painting her beauty and his evenings planning for a future they were never supposed to have.
"It’s perfect," she whispered.
"I figured if we're going to have a house full of strange friends and even stranger memories, we should at least have nice accessories," Amane teased, though his eyes were full of a deep, abiding love.
He helped her up from the sofa, his arm supporting her weight with practiced ease. "Come on. Let’s get some dinner. I think I saw some leftover stir-fry in the fridge, unless Mitsuba 'reorganized' it into the trash."
"He wouldn't dare," Nene laughed. "He was too busy telling me how much Kou-kun wanted to kiss him."
Amane stopped dead in his tracks, his eyebrows shooting up. "He said what?"
"Oh, you missed it, Amane-kun! He was very confident about it."
Amane shook his head, a smirk playing on his lips. "That kid... I really need to increase the stakes of our next bet. Maybe I can get Kou to wear the dress next time."
"Amane-kun, no!"
"Amane-kun, yes! Imagine the photos, Nene. We could fund Tamaki’s college education with the blackmail alone."
They walked toward the kitchen, their voices filling the clean, bright house with laughter. The shadows of the past were still there, tucked away in the corners of their minds, but they were no longer something to fear. They were just part of the story—a long, winding tale that had led them here, to a quiet Tuesday evening, a clean house, and a life that was finally, beautifully, their own.
As Amane opened the refrigerator, he found one last note from Mitsuba taped to the milk carton.
*P.S. Yugi-kun, if you ever make me wear polyester again, I will tell Nene what you actually wished for on that star in middle school. Don't test me.*
Amane quickly ripped the note off and crumbled it into his pocket, his face turning a brilliant shade of red.
"What was that?" Nene asked, peering over his shoulder.
"Nothing! Just... Mitsuba being Mitsuba," Amane said quickly, reaching for the leftover containers.
Nene just smiled, leaning her head against his shoulder. She didn't need to know the secret. She already had everything she had ever wished for, standing right here in the kitchen.
