The Love Between Us
The Rhythm of Discipline and Devotion
The honeymoon phase, Jisung decided, was a misnomer. For most people, it was a fleeting moment of sweetness before reality set in. But for him and Minho, reality had simply become a more intense, more vibrant version of their previous lives. They had been dating for several months now, and rather than settling into a predictable routine, their connection had deepened into something possessive, protective, and undeniably domestic.
The dance studio remained their sanctuary, though the atmosphere had shifted. The air was still thick with the scent of peppermint and hard work, but the tension between them had evolved from the friction of two opposing forces into the magnetic pull of two halves of a whole.
"Jisung, you're trailing again," Minho’s voice rang out, sharp as a blade.
Jisung wiped sweat from his forehead, his burgundy hair damp and sticking to his temples. He puffed out his cheeks, his chest heaving. "Hyung, we've been at this for four hours. My legs feel like overcooked noodles."
Minho stopped the music. He stood in the center of the room, his blonde hair perfectly coiffed despite the exertion, looking like a statue of some ancient, judgmental god. He crossed his arms over his chest, his gaze sweeping over Jisung’s slumped frame.
"If your legs are noodles, it's because you haven't been conditioning them properly," Minho said, walking toward him. "You’re lazy, Hannie. You rely on your talent to carry you through, but talent doesn't fix a sloppy transition."
Jisung pouted, a stubborn glint in his eyes. "I’m not lazy. I’m just... energy efficient. Besides, you said I was doing great yesterday."
"Yesterday isn't today," Minho countered. He reached out, poking Jisung’s rounded cheek with a firm finger. "And today, you’re being a brat. You’re missing the count on purpose because you want to go get iced Americanos."
Jisung gasped, placing a hand over his heart. "How dare you accuse me of such noble intentions! I would never prioritize caffeine over your delightful company."
Minho’s eyes narrowed. "Get back in position. We’re doing the bridge again. And if you miss that turn one more time, there will be consequences."
Jisung smirked, feeling a thrill run down his spine. He loved pushing Minho’s buttons. There was something intoxicating about seeing the cool, collected Lee Minho lose his composure, even if it was just a flicker of irritation in his dark eyes.
"Consequences?" Jisung teased, stepping back into the center of the floor. "What are you going to do? Make me do extra push-ups? Give me a stern talking-to?"
Minho didn't answer. He simply restarted the music.
The beat dropped, and they moved in sync. For three minutes, they were a whirlwind of burgundy and gold. Jisung focused, his movements sharper, his body responding to the rhythm. But as the bridge approached—the complex series of footwork that had been plagueing him—his mind wandered for a split second. He thought about the way Minho’s hand had felt on his cheek earlier, and his foot caught.
He didn't fall this time, but he stumbled, losing the beat entirely.
Minho killed the music instantly. The silence that followed was heavy.
"Go to the corner," Minho said, his voice dangerously low.
Jisung blinked, his heart skipping a beat. "What? Like a timeout? Hyung, I’m twenty-three, not five."
"I don't care if you're a hundred," Minho said, walking toward him with a slow, predatory grace. "I told you there would be consequences for being careless. You’re not taking this seriously because you think I’ll let it slide because I love you."
Jisung opened his mouth to argue, but the look in Minho’s eyes stopped him. It wasn't coldness—it was a fierce, burning intensity. Minho cared about Jisung’s growth more than anyone, and he took his role as a mentor and a partner with a gravity that was both terrifying and deeply moving.
"Turn around," Minho commanded.
Jisung’s breath hitched. He felt his face heating up, a deep crimson matching his hair. "Minho-hyung..."
"Now, Jisung."
Slowly, his heart hammering against his ribs, Jisung turned around. He leaned his hands against the cool glass of the practice room mirror, staring at his own wide-eyed reflection. He could see Minho standing behind him, a tall, blonde shadow.
"You’ve been distracted all week," Minho said, his voice right next to Jisung’s ear. "You’ve been sloppy, you’ve been talking back, and you’ve been testing my patience. Do you think I don't notice?"
"I... I’m sorry," Jisung whispered, his grip tightening on the edge of the mirror.
"Sorry isn't enough," Minho replied.
Without warning, Minho reached out and gripped Jisung’s hip with one hand to steady him. With the other, he delivered a sharp, stinging swat across the seat of Jisung’s sweatpants.
*Smack!*
Jisung let out a startled yelp, his body jolting. The sting was immediate, a hot flash of pain that quickly faded into a dull throb. It wasn't enough to truly hurt, but the shock of it—the sheer audacity of the gesture—sent a wave of heat through his entire body.
"That’s for the missed turn," Minho said calmly.
*Smack!*
"That’s for the attitude."
Jisung buried his face in his arms against the mirror, his cheeks burning. "Hyung! Stop it!"
"Are you going to focus?" Minho asked, his hand hovering over Jisung’s backside.
"Yes! Yes, I’ll focus!" Jisung squeaked, his voice muffled.
Minho delivered one last, firm swat that made Jisung’s toes curl. *Smack!*
"That one was just because I felt like it," Minho whispered, leaning down to press a soft, lingering kiss to the back of Jisung’s neck, right where his burgundy hair met his skin.
The transition from discipline to tenderness was so abrupt it made Jisung’s head spin. He turned around, his face a mess of embarrassment and adoration. Minho was looking at him with a small, satisfied smirk, his eyes softened with that secret affection he reserved only for Jisung.
"You’re a menace," Jisung panted, reaching out to clutch the front of Minho’s shirt. "A literal tyrant."
Minho wrapped his arms around Jisung’s waist, pulling the shorter boy flush against him. He rested his forehead against Jisung’s, their breaths mingling in the quiet studio.
"I’m your tyrant," Minho corrected softly. "And you’re my clumsy, brilliant, bratty Quokka. I wouldn't have to be so hard on you if you didn't make me worry so much. You’re going to hurt yourself if you don't stay focused."
Jisung sighed, melting into the embrace. He wrapped his arms around Minho’s neck, his fingers tangling in the golden strands of hair at the nape of Minho’s neck. "I know. I’m sorry. I just... I get distracted looking at you."
Minho chuckled, a low vibration that Jisung felt in his chest. "Is that so? Maybe I should wear a paper bag over my head during practice."
"Don't you dare," Jisung said, pulling back just enough to look Minho in the eye. "I need to see your face. Even when you're being mean."
Minho’s expression shifted, his gaze dropping to Jisung’s lips. "I’m not being mean, Jisung. I’m being protective. There’s a difference."
"I know," Jisung whispered. "I feel it."
Minho leaned in, closing the distance between them. The kiss was slow and deep, a silent vow of devotion that tasted like peppermint and sweat and everything Jisung had ever wanted. It was a grounding force, a reminder that no matter how hard they pushed each other or how much they bickered, they were anchored to one another.
When they finally pulled apart, Jisung’s legs really did feel like noodles, but for a very different reason.
"Cheesecake?" Minho asked, rubbing a thumb over Jisung’s bottom lip.
Jisung laughed, the sound bright and clear. "You’re buying this time. As compensation for my traumatized ego."
"And your traumatized butt?" Minho teased, his hand dropping to give Jisung’s backside a playful, gentle squeeze.
Jisung yelped, jumping away with a bright red face. "Lee Minho! We are in a professional environment!"
"There’s no one here but us, Hannie," Minho said, grabbing his bag and heading for the door. He paused, looking back with a wink that made Jisung’s heart do a backflip. "And I happen to think you perform much better when you’re a little bit... motivated."
Jisung scrambled to gather his things, tripping over his own gym bag in his haste to catch up. "Wait for me! And I want the expensive cheesecake! The one with the gold leaf!"
"Dream on, Jisung," Minho called out, though he held the door open, waiting with a patient, loving smile.
As they walked out into the cool evening air, hand in hand, Jisung realized that their love wasn't just about the sweet moments. It was about the friction, the discipline, and the way they forced each other to be better. Minho was the gold that gave Jisung’s life value, and Jisung was the burgundy that gave Minho’s life color.
"Hyung?" Jisung asked as they reached the sidewalk.
"Hmm?"
"I love you. Even when you're a bully."
Minho squeezed his hand, his gaze fixed on the path ahead, but the tips of his ears were pink. "I love you too, you idiot. Now hurry up, or the cafe will close."
And in the quiet rhythm of the city, the dancer and his rapper walked on, perfectly in step, falling in love a little more with every stride.
