The Love Between Us
The Weight of the Gilded Rod
The atmosphere in the private practice room was stifling, the air thick with the scent of ozone and the faint, metallic tang of sweat. It was nearly midnight, and the harsh fluorescent lights overhead hummed a low, clinical drone that grated on Han Jisung’s frayed nerves. He stood in the center of the wooden floor, his chest heaving, his burgundy hair plastered to his forehead in damp, jagged spikes.
Across from him, Lee Minho looked like he hadn't even broken a sweat. His blonde hair was swept back, revealing the sharp, icy clarity of his features. He stood with his arms crossed over his chest, his posture regal and terrifyingly still. In his right hand, he loosely held a long, flexible plastic floor marker—a makeshift switch that he had been tapping against his thigh with a rhythmic, hypnotic *thwack*.
"Again," Minho said. His voice wasn't loud, but it carried a razor-edged authority that made Jisung’s stomach do a slow, nauseous flip.
"Hyung, please," Jisung gasped, his legs trembling. "I’ve done the sequence twenty times. My brain is fried. I can’t—"
"You can, and you will," Minho interrupted, his dark eyes narrowing. "You were late on the third beat. Again. You’re not tired, Jisung. You’re being lazy. You’re letting your mind wander because you think that just because we shared a bed last night, the rules don't apply to you in this room."
Jisung flinched. It was true, and the sting of the realization was sharper than any physical blow. He had been riding the high of their newfound intimacy, letting his guard down, whispering jokes during the choreography briefing and "accidentally" bumping into Minho during the formations just to feel the spark of his touch. He had been a brat, testing the limits of Minho’s patience, convinced that his chubby cheeks and pouty lips would earn him a pass.
He had been wrong.
"I’m not being lazy," Jisung muttered, his lower lip trembling. "I’m just... I’m hurting, Minho."
Minho took a slow, deliberate step forward. The tapping of the marker against his leg stopped. "In this room, I am not your boyfriend. I am your dance lead. And when you disrupt a professional rehearsal with your constant need for attention, you aren't just disrespecting me—you’re disrespecting the team. You’ve been warned three times today, Jisung. No more excuses."
Minho pointed the marker toward the far corner of the room, near the heavy velvet curtains that muffled the sound of the outside world. "Over the barre. Now."
Jisung’s breath hitched. His heart hammered a frantic, terrified rhythm against his ribs. He knew that tone. It was the tone of a man who was done talking. Slowly, his head hanging low, Jisung trudged toward the waist-high wooden railing bolted to the wall. Every step felt like he was walking toward a gallows.
He reached the barre and hesitated, his hands gripping the cool wood so hard his knuckles turned white.
"Lean over, Han. Hands on the lower rail," Minho commanded from behind him.
Jisung obeyed, bending at the waist until his torso was parallel to the floor. The position was vulnerable, leaving his backside taut and exposed under the thin fabric of his black tech-fleece joggers. He squeezed his eyes shut, listening to the steady, rhythmic click of Minho’s sneakers against the floorboards as the older boy approached.
"You need to learn that your actions have consequences, Jisung-ah," Minho whispered, his voice suddenly very close. He placed a steadying hand on the small of Jisung’s back, a touch that would have been comforting if not for the cold intent behind it. "If you can't focus your mind, I’ll have to focus your body for you."
*Swish—SMACK!*
The plastic marker whistled through the air before connecting squarely across the meat of Jisung’s seat. The sound was like a gunshot in the silent room.
Jisung let out a sharp, strangled cry, his body jolting upward. The pain was immediate and white-hot, a searing line of fire that felt like it was branded into his skin. He tried to pull away, but Minho’s hand on his back was like an iron vice, pinning him in place.
"Stay down," Minho said firmly. "That was for the talking back during the 2 PM block."
*Swish—SMACK!*
The second strike landed just below the first, overlapping the sting. Jisung’s vision blurred with sudden, hot tears. He buried his face in his arms, biting his lip so hard he tasted copper.
"That was for the missed cues," Minho continued, his voice calm and clinical, as if he were simply checking items off a list.
*Swish—SMACK!*
"And that was for the 'daddy' comment in front of the stylists."
Jisung sobbed, a messy, undignified sound that echoed off the mirrors. "I’m sorry! Hyung, I’m sorry, I won't do it again! Please, it hurts!"
Minho paused. He leaned down, his chest brushing against Jisung’s back. He could feel the frantic heat radiating from the younger boy, the way his entire frame was vibrating with tremors. Minho reached out and ran a gentle hand through Jisung’s burgundy hair, a jarringly tender gesture in the wake of the discipline.
"I know it hurts, Jisungie," Minho whispered, his lips touching the shell of Jisung’s ear. "It’s supposed to. If it didn't hurt, you wouldn't remember. And I need you to remember that when we are working, you belong to the music, not to your whims."
Minho straightened up, his shadow looming large against the wall. "Two more. For the attitude you gave me five minutes ago. Hold still."
Jisung gripped the barre until the wood bit into his palms. He braced himself, his muscles locking in anticipation.
*Swish—SMACK!*
*Swish—SMACK!*
The final two strikes were the hardest, delivered with a precision that left Jisung breathless. He collapsed forward, his forehead resting against the cool wood of the barre, his breath coming in jagged, hitching gasps. The fire in his skin was throbbing now, a deep, pulsing ache that made every nerve ending scream.
The room fell silent again, save for the sound of Jisung’s muffled weeping.
After a moment, he felt the marker being set aside on a nearby bench. Then, two strong arms wrapped around his waist, hoisting him up and turning him around. Jisung slumped into Minho’s chest, his legs too weak to support him. He hid his face in the crook of Minho’s neck, his tears soaking into the older boy’s shirt.
"Shh, I’ve got you," Minho murmured, his voice finally shedding its icy professional veneer. He wrapped his arms tightly around Jisung, rocking him gently from side to side. "It’s over now. You’re okay."
"You’re so mean," Jisung blubbered, his voice small and broken. "You’re a monster."
Minho let out a soft, breathy laugh, his hand coming up to cup the back of Jisung’s head. "I’m your monster. And you’re my bratty, talented, beautiful disaster. I hate having to do that, Jisung. Truly. But you were spinning out of control. I had to bring you back down to earth."
Minho pulled back just enough to look into Jisung’s puffy, red-rimmed eyes. He reached out and wiped away a stray tear with his thumb, his gaze soft and full of a fierce, protective love.
"Are you back with me now?" Minho asked softly. "Is the noise in your head gone?"
Jisung sniffled, nodding slowly. It was strange, but the physical shock of the punishment had cleared away the fog of restlessness that had been plaguing him all day. The world felt sharp again, focused. The "noise"—the constant need to poke and prod and provoke—had been replaced by a quiet, heavy calm.
"Yeah," Jisung whispered. "I’m here."
"Good," Minho said. He leaned down and pressed a long, lingering kiss to Jisung’s forehead. "Now, let’s go home. You’ve worked hard today, even if you were a pain in the neck for most of it."
Jisung let out a weak, watery chuckle. "Can you carry me? My legs really are noodles now."
Minho rolled his eyes, but a genuine smile finally broke across his face. He turned around, crouching down to offer his back. "Get on, you oversized quokka. But if you call me 'daddy' in the hallway, I’m dropping you."
Jisung scrambled onto Minho’s back, wrapping his arms tightly around the older boy’s neck and burying his face in the golden strands of his hair. As Minho stood up, adjusting Jisung’s weight with a grunt, Jisung felt a profound sense of safety.
The walk back to the dorm was quiet. The cool night air felt like a balm against Jisung’s heated skin. He felt the steady rhythm of Minho’s heartbeat through his back, a constant, reliable metronome that kept his world in sync.
When they reached their shared room, Minho set him down gently on the edge of the bed. He disappeared into the bathroom for a moment, returning with a cool, damp washcloth and a tube of soothing cream.
"Lay down," Minho commanded, though this time it was a request disguised as an order.
Jisung obeyed, burying his face in his pillow. He felt the cool air as Minho carefully eased his joggers down, exposing the angry, red welts that crisscrossed his pale skin. Jisung hissed as the cool cloth touched the heat, his fingers bunching the bedsheets.
"Easy," Minho whispered, his touch feather-light as he cleaned the area. "I know it stings."
He began to apply the cream, his long, elegant fingers moving in slow, circular motions. The medicine had a cooling effect that immediately began to dull the sharp edges of the pain. Jisung felt his muscles finally begin to relax, the tension draining out of him like water.
"Hyung?" Jisung asked into the pillow, his voice muffled.
"Hmm?"
"Thank you. For... you know. Catching me."
Minho’s hand paused for a second before continuing its work. "I’ll always catch you, Jisung-ah. Even when I have to be the one who knocks you off balance first to make sure you land right."
Minho finished with the cream and pulled the covers up over Jisung’s lower half. He climbed into the bed beside him, pulling the younger boy into his arms. Jisung tucked his head under Minho’s chin, his eyes heavy with exhaustion.
"Tomorrow," Minho said, his voice a low rumble in his chest. "We’re going to nail that bridge. No mistakes. No distractions."
"I know," Jisung murmured, his voice drifting off into sleep. "I’ll be perfect for you."
"You already are," Minho whispered, though he knew Jisung was already too far gone to hear him.
He held the burgundy-haired boy close, his blonde hair mingling with the dark strands on the pillow. The discipline of the studio was a world away now, replaced by the quiet, fierce devotion of the night. Minho knew that tomorrow, they would be back to being the cold leader and the clumsy rapper, pushing each other to the brink of perfection.
But for now, they were just two halves of a whole, finding their rhythm in the silence, bound together by the weight of the gilded rod and the softness of the hands that held it.
As the moon climbed higher, casting a silver glow over the room, Minho closed his eyes, finally allowing himself to drift off, knowing that no matter how hard they fell, they would always fall together.
