The Gravity of a Ghost
The silence in the apartment had shifted from a sanctuary to a prison. For three days, Jamal had been a ghost in his own home. He was physically there—eating the breakfast Mimi made, sitting on the sofa, even sleeping in the same bed—but the warmth that usually radiated from him had been replaced by a clinical, polite distance. He was like a statue of the man she loved, cold to the touch and impossible to move.
It was Friday night, the air outside the window thick with the scent of rain and city asphalt. Mimi sat on the edge of the bed, her heart hammering a frantic rhythm against her ribs. She was wearing one of his old, oversized Bayern training shirts, the fabric smelling faintly of the laundry detergent they shared. It swallowed her petite frame, the hem falling mid-thigh, leaving her legs bare and vulnerable.
Jamal was brushing his teeth in the bathroom. When he finally walked out, he didn't look at her. He moved to his side of the bed, pulled back the covers, and climbed in, immediately reaching for his phone to check the morning’s training schedule.
Mimi felt something inside her snap. It wasn't a loud break, but a quiet, painful tearing. She crawled across the mattress, not stopping until she was inches away from him. He didn't move, though she saw his thumb falter as he scrolled.
"Jamal, look at me," she whispered.
He didn't. "I’m tired, Mimi. We have a double session tomorrow."
"I don't care about the session," she said, her voice trembling. "I care about us. You haven't touched me in four days. You haven't really looked at me since the PSG game. Please, just tell me what I did wrong."
Jamal finally locked his phone and set it on the nightstand, but he kept his gaze fixed on the ceiling. "You didn't do anything wrong, Mimi. I told you, I’ve just been focused."
"That’s a lie," she said, and a hot tear finally escaped, trailing down her cheek. "Is it because of the meme? Because of the photo from when I was fifteen? If it is, I’ll fix it. I’ll delete my Instagram right now. I’ll stop coming to the games if my face on the big screen makes you this angry. I’ll stay inside. I’ll be invisible. Just… please don't be cold to me. I can’t handle you being cold to me."
She let out a small, broken sob, burying her face in her hands. The sight of her—so small in his clothes, offering to erase her own presence just to make him smile again—hit Jamal like a physical blow to the solar plexus. The wall he had built out of pride and territorial fear crumbled instantly.
"Mimi, no," he groaned, his voice thick with sudden regret. He moved instantly, discarding his distance and pulling her into his lap. He wrapped his long arms around her, tucking her head under his chin as she cried into his chest. "Oh, God, no. Don't say that. Don't ever say you’ll be invisible."
"But you’re so mad," she sobbed, her fingers clutching the fabric of his shirt. "I feel like I’m a burden. Like Anne said… like I’m a distraction that’s ruining everything for you."
"Anne was wrong," Jamal said fiercely, his hand cupping the back of her head, his fingers tangling in her curls. "She was so wrong, and I was a fool for letting her words get under my skin. I’m not mad at you, Mimi. I could never be mad at you for being beautiful or for having a life before me."
He pulled back just enough to look into her tear-stained eyes, his own expression raw.
"I was just… I was scared," he admitted, the confession sounding forced from his throat. "Seeing that guy in the stands staring at you, seeing the French fans claim you, seeing a player like Doué suddenly interested… I felt like the whole world was trying to take a piece of what’s mine. I felt like I had to hold onto you so tight that I ended up pushing you away instead. I’m so sorry, love. I’ve been a complete idiot."
Mimi looked up at him, her eyelashes wet. "You were jealous?"
Jamal let out a self-deprecating laugh, leaning forward to press his forehead against hers. "I was terrified. I look at you and I see everything I ever wanted. And then I see the rest of the world looking at you and I realize how easily they could try to take it. It made me feel small."
"Nobody could take me," Mimi whispered, her hand rising to stroke his cheek. "I’m clingy, remember? I’m stuck to you."
Jamal smiled, a real, warm smile that finally reached his eyes. He leaned down, capturing her lips in a kiss that was desperate and apologetic, reclaiming the territory he had almost lost to his own pride. He held her all night, his arms locked around her as if he were afraid she might evaporate if he let go.

The next morning, the sun was a brilliant, unforgiving gold. Jamal woke up with a singular mission: to be the boyfriend Mimi deserved, away from the noise of the city and the pressure of the pitch.
"Pack a bag," he said, nipping at her ear as she stirred. "We’re going to the Starnberger See. Just us."
The beach was relatively quiet for a Saturday, but "quiet" for a world-class footballer was a relative term. Mimi felt a surge of confidence she hadn't felt in weeks. She wore a tiny white bikini top that accentuated her tan and a pair of denim shorts so short they flirted with the curve of her hips.
They spent the afternoon in a world of their own. They rented a private lounge chair, a large circular daybed that felt like an island.
"You look beautiful," Jamal murmured, his eyes tracking the way the sunlight danced on her skin. He didn't care about the cameras he knew were lurking in the distance. He didn't care about the optics.
He pulled her toward him as they floated in the shallow, turquoise water. The cool lake lapped at their skin as he lifted her, her legs wrapping around his waist. They kissed, slow and deep, the world around them blurring into a haze of blue and gold.
Later, as they walked along the shore, Jamal held her hand firmly, his thumb rubbing circles over her knuckles. They eventually retreated back to their large chair. Mimi lay on top of him, her chest pressed to his, her face hovering just above his. She leaned down to pepper kisses along his jaw and chin, her curls falling like a veil around them. Jamal’s hand rested heavily, possessively, on the curve of her bottom, his fingers digging slightly into the denim of her shorts.
By the time they got home that evening, the photos were already everywhere.
Mimi sat on the sofa, her phone glowing in the dim light. The "butt photo," as the internet had already dubbed it, was the top trending topic on German Twitter. It was a high-quality shot, capturing the raw, intimate intensity of the moment.
"Jamal," she said, her voice small. "The pictures from today… they’re really private. I mean, they’re not, but they feel like it. Are you going to be okay? Is the club going to be mad?"
Jamal walked over, drying his hair with a towel. He glanced at the screen, seeing the image of his hand on her, the look of absolute adoration on his face as she kissed his chin. He didn't flinch. He didn't pull away.
He sat down beside her and pulled her into his side. "Let them look, Mimi. Let them see that I’m not going anywhere, and neither are you. I spent all week worrying about what people thought. I’m done with that. As long as I have you by my side, the internet can say whatever it wants."
Mimi leaned her head on his shoulder, feeling a massive weight lift off her chest. "I like that plan."
The room went quiet for a moment, the only sound the hum of the refrigerator. Jamal took a deep breath, the memory of the PSG game resurfacing.
"Mimi?"
"Yeah?"
"You asked what Doué said to me. On the pitch."
Mimi sat up, her eyes narrowing. "You’re ready to tell me?"
Jamal nodded, his expression hardening slightly. "He leaned in and told me, in English, that I was lucky. He said, 'Your girlfriend is really pretty, Jamal. Maybe too pretty for Munich. She looks like she belongs in Paris.'"
Mimi’s jaw dropped. The sheer arrogance of it, the way he had used her as a psychological weapon in the middle of a professional match, made her blood boil.
"He said that?" she asked, her voice flat with disbelief. "While you were shaking hands?"
"Yeah," Jamal said. "It was a provocation. He wanted to see if he could get a reaction. And for a few days, he did. He got exactly what he wanted because I let it get to me."
Mimi didn't hesitate. She grabbed her phone, navigated to her "following" list, and found the verified account of Désiré Doué. With a decisive tap, she hit *Block*. Then, she went into her settings and toggled her account to *Private*.
"There," she said, showing the screen to Jamal. "He’s blocked. And no one else gets to see my photos unless I want them to. He’s not a 'talented player' to me anymore. He’s just a jerk."
Jamal looked at the screen, then back at her. A slow, triumphant grin spread across his face. He felt a surge of pride that had nothing to do with football and everything to do with the fierce, loyal woman sitting in front of him.
"You blocked him?"
"In a heartbeat," she said, tossing the phone onto the cushions. "I don't care about his technique. I care about my boyfriend."
Jamal lunged for her then, tackling her back into the sofa cushions with a bark of laughter. He showered her face in kisses, his heart finally light, finally free of the ghosts that had been haunting their halls.
"I love you, Mimi," he whispered against her lips.
"I love you too, you jealous dummy," she replied, pulling him down for a kiss that silenced the rest of the world.
The memes would fade, the tabloids would find a new target, and the French wingers would eventually move on to the next headline. But in the quiet of their shared apartment, under the soft glow of the living room lamp, the only thing that remained was the peace they had fought so hard to protect. And this time, Jamal Musiala knew exactly how to hold onto it.
