Wonderful Trials of Family
The Echo of the Spotlight
The moon hung high over the quiet neighborhood, casting a silvery glow that matched the pristine white walls of the Otori-Tenma residence. Inside their master bedroom, the atmosphere was thick with a mixture of domestic diligence and soft, repetitive apologies. Tsukasa stood before the open closet, the light from the bedside lamp catching the gold of his eyes as he worked with the focus of a master craftsman.
In his hands was one of Emu’s favorite pink shirts, adorned with a small, smiling cat. He didn't just fold it; he smoothed every wrinkle with the flat of his palm, aligning the seams with surgical precision. He tucked the sleeves inward and folded the bodice until it resembled a perfectly symmetrical square—a piece of textile origami that would have made a boutique owner weep with envy.
"I am truly, deeply, catastrophically sorry, Emu," Tsukasa said, his voice dropping into a dramatic baritone of remorse. He placed the shirt into the 'Emu' drawer with the reverence of someone handling a holy relic. "To think that I, the man who promised to be your shield and your servant, allowed you to carry a basket of damp laundry to the machine! It is a stain on my honor! A blot on the Tenma legacy!"
Emu, meanwhile, was currently a flurry of movement on the mattress behind him. She was lying on her back, her legs kicking playfully in the air as she rolled from side to side, her maternity gown bunching up around her knees. She looked like a happy turtle that had accidentally flipped over and decided the view was better that way.
"Hehe! It’s okay, Tsukasa-kun! My arms needed the exercise anyway," she chirped, her voice muffled as she buried her face in a pillow before popping back up. "Besides, the baby liked the 'swish-swash' sound of the water. He was dancing the whole time!"
Tsukasa turned, a pair of his own socks held in his hands like a peace offering. "Even so! You are in a delicate state, carrying the future star of the century! From this moment forward, I decree that you shall not touch a single piece of unwashed fabric. I shall be the Master of the Hamper! The Sultan of Soap!"
Emu giggled, the sound bubbling through the room. She reached out for her phone, which was encased in a bulky, plush silicone cover shaped like a giant piece of taiyaki. The "fin" of the fish poked her in the cheek as she held it up, her eyes scanning the bright screen.
"I know, I know! You’re the bestest laundry-prince ever," she said, her thumbs flying across the screen.
She was scrolling through the Wonderlands × Showtime group chat, a digital space that was usually a chaotic mess of Rui’s blueprints, Nene’s gaming screenshots, and Tsukasa’s self-aggrandizing selfies. Suddenly, her scrolling stopped. Her eyes widened, the pink irises shimmering with an intensity that rivaled the phone’s backlight.
A new message from Rui Kamishiro sat at the bottom of the thread. It was brief, which usually meant he was busy with a soldering iron in one hand and a script in the other.
*Rui: The stage is set for tomorrow afternoon. Nene and I have finalized the 'Galactic Journey' sequence at the main stage in Phoenix Wonderland. Tsukasa, if Emu-kun is feeling up to a short excursion away from her 'fortress of rest,' you should both come. The front row is reserved.*
Emu’s heart didn't just beat; it performed a triple-axel. The stage. The smells of popcorn and greasepaint. The sound of a crowd holding its breath. It had been weeks since she had stepped foot inside the park, her doctors and Tsukasa both insisting that the summer heat and the excitement might be too much for her.
"Tsukasa-kun! Tsukasa-kun!"
In her excitement, Emu forgot the physics of her current center of gravity. She attempted to flip herself off the bed with her usual "Wonderhoy" energy, intending to land on her feet and strike a pose. Instead, her stomach acted as a pivot point she wasn't used to. She overbalanced, her momentum carrying her forward faster than her hands could catch her.
*Thump.*
"Ouchie!"
The sound of her forehead hitting the hardwood floor was followed by a silence that lasted exactly half a second before she burst into loud, sorrowful wails.
"EMU!" Tsukasa shrieked, dropping a pile of silk boxers as if they had turned into hot coals.
He was across the room in a flash, sliding on his knees across the floor. He gathered her into his arms, pulling her head to his chest while frantically checking her for broken bones, bruises, or any sign of a premature theatrical exit.
"My star! My love! Speak to me! Is the heir unharmed? Is your beautiful face intact? Oh, what a fool I am! I should have padded the floors with marshmallows!"
Emu sniffled, her face red and her eyes streaming with tears of sudden shock and pain. She rubbed the growing bump on her forehead, but even through the sobs, she was fumbling for her phone. She thrust the taiyaki case into Tsukasa’s face, pointing a trembling finger at the screen.
"Rui-kun... the stage..." she sobbed, her words hiccupping out. "He said... we can go. Tsukasa-kun, please! I miss it so much! I miss the 'wah-ha!' and the 'yay-yay!' and seeing everyone's smiles!"
Tsukasa looked at the message, then back at his wife. Her hair was a mess, her forehead was turning pink, and her eyes were pleading with a desperation that cut through his protective instincts. He had spent the last month trying to wrap her in bubble wrap, terrified that even a loud noise might upset the balance of her pregnancy. But looking at her now, he realized that Emu Otori without the park was like a bird without the sky.
He let out a long, theatrical sigh, his shoulders slumping. He reached up, gently wiping the tears from her cheeks with his thumbs, his touch softening.
"You are a very stubborn woman, Emu," he murmured, his voice losing its bombast. "And a very clumsy one. You hit your head on the floor and your first thought is of the theater?"
"Because the theater makes the 'ouchie' go away!" she insisted, her bottom lip quivering. "Please, Tsukasa-kun? Just for an hour? I'll sit still! I won't jump! I won't even 'Wonderhoy' at a volume higher than a six!"
Tsukasa couldn't help it; he chuckled. The idea of Emu keeping her excitement to a "six" was statistically impossible.
"Fine," he said, pressing a kiss to the red spot on her forehead. "We shall go. But under the strictest supervision! I shall be your bodyguard, your usher, and your personal fan-bearer."
Emu’s sorrow vanished instantly. A smile so bright it could have powered the entire city of Tokyo erupted across her face. She threw her arms around his neck, squeezing him so hard his ribs creaked. "Yay! Wonderhoy! I love you, I love you, I love you!"
"Yes, yes, I am quite lovable," Tsukasa preened, though he made sure to help her back onto the bed with extreme care. He looked at the clock; it was nearing midnight. The adrenaline of the fall was fading, leaving a heavy, warm exhaustion in its wake. "But for now, we must rest. The show is tomorrow, and a star needs her beauty sleep."
He looked at the bed, which was a disaster of tangled sheets and discarded pillows from Emu’s earlier rolling. He looked at the laundry still waiting in the closet. Then, he looked at Emu, who was already tugging at the hem of her gown, her eyes heavy with sleep but sparkling with anticipation.
"To heck with the chores," Tsukasa muttered.
The "Future Star" shed his yellow hoodie and his trousers, leaving them in a heap that he would surely criticize himself for in the morning. Emu followed suit, sliding out of her gown until they were both stripped down to the bare essentials, the cool air of the room a pleasant contrast to the heat of their skin.
They climbed under the duvet together. Tsukasa didn't bother straightening the sheets; he simply pulled the heavy comforter over them both. He moved behind her, spooning her body against his. His hand found hers, their fingers interlacing over the curve of her stomach. The baby kicked—a solid, rhythmic thump that they both felt against their palms.
"He's excited too," Emu whispered into the darkness.
Tsukasa leaned forward, pressing his lips to the back of her neck. "He probably wants to see what all the fuss is about. He’s been hearing us talk about the stage since he was the size of a grape."
In the quiet of the room, the tension of the day melted away. There was no laundry, no scripts, no "Future Star" persona. There was just a husband and a wife, two performers waiting for their next big opening. Tsukasa’s kisses moved from her neck to her shoulder, and then he pulled her hand up to his lips, kissing each knuckle with a slow, deliberate tenderness.
"I'll make sure it's perfect for you tomorrow, Emu," he promised, his voice a low rumble against her skin. "I'll make sure you see the brightest smiles in the world."
"You already give me those every day," she murmured, her voice trailing off as sleep finally began to claim her.
***
The sun had barely begun to peek over the horizon the next morning when the alarm clock on the bedside table let out a cheerful, rhythmic beep. Usually, Tsukasa was the one to jump out of bed with a shout of "The sun rises on a new legend!" while Emu grumbled and buried herself deeper into the blankets.
Today, the roles were reversed.
Before the alarm could even reach its third beep, Emu was upright. She didn't just wake up; she launched into consciousness like a firework.
"Tsukasa-kun! Tsukasa-kun! Wake up! It’s show day! It’s Wonderland day! The sun is 'shining-wining' and the birds are 'chirp-chirping'!"
Tsukasa groaned, his eyes fused shut. The lack of sleep from the night before was catching up to him, his brain feeling like it was wrapped in cotton wool. "Emu... the show isn't until... two in the afternoon... let the star sleep for five more minutes..."
"No five minutes! We have to get ready! We have to eat breakfast! We have to pick out my cutest dress! And we have to make sure your hair is extra 'whoosh'!"
She began to bounce on the mattress. *Boing. Boing. Boing.*
"Emu! Stop! The suspension of this mattress cannot handle such enthusiasm!" Tsukasa cried, finally forcing his eyes open.
He was greeted by the sight of Emu hovering over him, her face inches from his. She was beaming, her hair a wild halo of pink frizz, her eyes wide and full of a manic, beautiful energy. She looked completely healed from her tumble the night before, her spirit revitalized by the mere promise of the stage.
"Good morning, Star-kun!" she shouted.
Tsukasa stared at her for a moment, his heart doing that strange, fluttering thing it always did when she looked at him like he was the only person in the world. He reached up, tugging on one of her stray locks of hair.
"You are a menace to society," he sighed, though a smile was already tugging at the corners of his mouth.
"I’m your menace!" she chirped, leaning down to plant a messy, energetic kiss on his nose. "Now get up! We have to go see Rui-kun and Nene-chan! Wonderhoy!"
Tsukasa sat up, rubbing his face and trying to summon his usual grandeur. He looked at his wife, who was already scurrying toward the closet to find her brightest outfit, and he realized that he didn't need the applause of a thousand people today. He just needed to keep up with her.
"Very well!" Tsukasa declared, throwing back the covers and striking a seated pose of triumph. "If the world demands my presence at the park, who am I to deny them? Prepare yourself, Phoenix Wonderland! The Tenma family is coming, and we shall bring the house down!"
Emu’s laughter filled the room, a sound more melodic than any showtune. As they began their morning routine—Tsukasa meticulously styling his hair while Emu "helped" by handing him the wrong hairbrushes—the house felt alive with a new kind of electricity.
The stage was waiting, their friends were waiting, and their son was waiting. And as they walked out the front door an hour later, hand in hand, Tsukasa knew that this wasn't just another show. It was a homecoming.
"Ready, Emu?" he asked as he helped her into the car.
Emu looked up at the bright blue sky, her smile wider than he had ever seen it. "Ready! Let’s make everyone smile, Tsukasa-kun!"
"Then let the curtains rise," he whispered, and they drove toward the magic.
