The Weight of the Name

The Tuesday night game against Harvard was brutal. It was a physical, grinding match that left Garrett with a split lip, a bruised rib, and a soaring sense of triumph. They’d won four-two, and Garrett had netted two of those goals himself. But as he stood in the center of the ice, the sweat cooling on his skin, he wasn't looking at the scoreboard. He was looking at the glass behind the home bench.

There she was.

Y/N sat in the front row, her small frame draped in his white away jersey. She looked like a delicate pearl encased in armor. Every time he’d skated past the glass during the third period, he’d seen her eyes tracking him—wide, adoring, and perfectly still. She didn't cheer like the other girls; she didn't scream or wave. She simply watched him with a quiet, submissive intensity that made Garrett feel like he was ten feet tall.

When he finally made it through the post-game press and the locker room celebrations, his body was humming with a mix of exhaustion and high-octane adrenaline. He wanted her. He didn't just want to see her; he needed to feel the quiet gravity of her presence to ground the kinetic energy still vibrating in his muscles.

He found her waiting by his car in the VIP lot, her hands tucked into the oversized sleeves of the jersey. The cold night air had turned the tip of her nose pink.

"You stayed," Garrett said, his voice gravelly as he dropped his heavy gear bag onto the asphalt.

"I told you I would," she replied softly. She stepped toward him, her eyes scanning the dark bruise forming on his jaw. "You're hurt."

Garrett reached out, his hand wrapping around the back of her neck, his thumb tilting her face up to his. "It’s hockey, baby. It’s nothing. Did you like the game?"

"You were... incredible," she whispered, her breath hitching as he pulled her closer. "Everyone was looking at you. You were so in control."

"I liked you watching me," Garrett murmured, leaning down to press a firm, possessive kiss to her forehead. "I liked knowing exactly where you were. Now, get in the car. I’m taking you home."

The drive back to the hockey house was quiet, but the air was thick. Garrett drove with one hand on the wheel and the other resting heavily on Y/N’s thigh. He could feel the slight tremors in her muscles beneath the fabric of the jersey. She was always so responsive to him, so attuned to his moods. He knew that tonight, after the violence and the victory of the game, he wasn't in the mood for gentle. He needed to be the center of her world.

When they entered his room, Garrett didn't turn on the main light. The ambient glow from the streetlights outside filtered through the blinds, casting long, slatted shadows across the floor. He kicked the door shut and locked it with a definitive click.

Y/N stood in the center of the room, her shoulders slightly hunched. She looked up at him, her expression a mix of vulnerability and anticipation. "Garrett?"

"Take it off," he commanded. His voice wasn't loud, but it carried the weight of the captaincy, the authority he exercised on the ice now translated into the private sanctuary of his bedroom.

She blinked, her fingers fluttering to the hem of the jersey. "The... the jersey?"

"Everything," Garrett said, shedding his own jacket and tossing it onto a chair. He walked toward her, his presence looming large in the small space. "I want to see you without my name covering you up for a minute. I want to see what’s mine."

Y/N obeyed without a second thought. It was what Garrett loved most about their new dynamic—the way she surrendered to him. She pulled the heavy mesh over her head, her hair tumbling down in a messy curtain, and then worked on the rest of her clothes until she stood before him in the dim light, shivering slightly.

Garrett didn't touch her immediately. He let his eyes roam over her, taking in the soft curves and the pale skin that looked like marble in the moonlight. He felt a fierce, protective surge of dominance. This was his reward. This was the peace at the end of the war.

"Come here," he said, sitting on the edge of the bed.

She walked to him, her steps hesitant but sure. When she reached him, he took her hips and pulled her between his knees. He looked up at her, his dark eyes searching hers.

"You were so quiet in the stands tonight," he noted, his hands sliding up her back to rest on her shoulder blades. "What were you thinking about when I got checked into the boards in the second?"

Y/N swallowed hard, her hands coming up to rest on his shoulders. "I was scared. But then I saw you get back up. You looked so... angry. And powerful. It made my heart race."

Garrett smirked, nipping at the skin of her stomach, making her jump. "I was angry because I didn't want you to see me down. I want you to see me winning. Always."

He pulled her down onto the bed, rolling so he was hovering over her. The mattress groaned under his weight. He pinned her wrists above her head with one hand, his grip firm but careful not to hurt her.

"You’re mine, Y/N," he whispered, his face inches from hers. "Do you understand that? After everything that happened, after you tried to leave... I’m never letting that happen again. You don't go on dates. You don't look at other guys. You belong right here, under me."

"I know," she breathed, her chest heaving. She didn't struggle against his hold; she leaned into it, her body softening beneath his. "I don't want to be anywhere else. I like it when you’re like this."

"Like what?"

"When you don't give me a choice," she confessed, her voice barely a whisper. "When you just... take what you want."

Garrett felt a jolt of pure heat go through him. He released her wrists, only to slide his hand into her hair, tilting her head back to expose the long line of her throat. He kissed his way down her neck, his teeth grazing the sensitive skin right where her pulse fluttered like a trapped bird.

"I’m going to take everything," he promised. "I’m going to make sure that by the time I’m done with you tonight, you can't even remember that other guy’s name. You’re going to have my marks on your skin and my name in your head."

The night became a blur of whispered commands and breathless "Yes, Garrett"s. He was demanding, guiding her through every movement, claiming every inch of her with a thoroughness that was almost clinical in its intensity. He pushed her, testing the limits of her endurance, but always anchored by the underlying tenderness that only she ever saw. He was her king, her captain, and her protector, all wrapped into one bruised and exhausted athlete.

Later, as the adrenaline finally began to ebb, Garrett lay on his back with Y/N curled into his side. Her head was tucked into the crook of his neck, and her breathing was slow and rhythmic. He ran a hand down her arm, his fingers tracing the faint red marks his grip had left on her wrists. He felt a pang of guilt, but when she felt him move, she let out a contented little sigh and pressed closer to him.

"You okay, baby?" he asked, his voice thick with sleep.

"Mmm-hmm," she murmured. She lifted her head slightly, looking at him with eyes that were heavy-lidded and full of peace. "Thank you, Garrett."

He chuckled, pulling her up so he could kiss the tip of her nose. "Thank me? For what? I’m pretty sure I’m the one who should be thanking you for putting up with me."

"For choosing me," she said, her voice turning serious. "For not being scared anymore. I know how hard it was for you to let someone in. I know you’re still worried about being like your father."

Garrett went still. The mention of Phil Graham usually felt like a bucket of ice water, but tonight, with Y/N’s warmth against him, the sting was duller.

"I’m nothing like him," Garrett said, more to himself than to her. "He uses people to make himself feel big. I... I just want to keep you safe. I want to be the person you come to when the world is too loud."

"You are," she said. She reached out, her small hand covering the bruise on his jaw. "You’re my safe place, Garrett. Even when you’re being a bossy hockey player."

"Hey," he protested with a grin. "I’m the captain. Bossy is in the job description."

"Well, you’re very good at your job," she teased, a rare spark of playfulness in her eyes.

Garrett flipped them over suddenly, pinning her back into the pillows and making her squeak in surprise. He looked down at her, his expression softening into something so raw and honest it would have terrified him a month ago.

"I love you," he said.

The words hung in the air, vibrating with more power than any slap shot he’d ever taken. It was the first time he’d said it. He’d shown it, he’d hinted at it, he’d fought for it—but he hadn't said the words.

Y/N’s eyes filled with tears, her lower lip trembling. She reached up, her fingers tangling in the hair at the nape of his neck. "I love you too, Garrett. So much."

He kissed her then, and it was different. It wasn't about dominance or possession or winning. It was a slow, reverent seal on a promise. He felt the last of his walls crumble. He didn't need the "friends with benefits" shield anymore. He didn't need the casual hookups or the late-night diner dates in the dark. He had the girl, he had the game, and for the first time in his life, he had a future that didn't feel like a predetermined script written by his father.

"Go to sleep," he whispered against her lips. "You have an early class tomorrow."

"Stay with me?" she asked, her voice small and submissive once more.

"Always," Garrett promised. "I’m not going anywhere. I’ve got everything I need right here."

He pulled the duvet over them, tucking her securely against his chest. As he closed his eyes, the sounds of the hockey house—the distant laughter of his teammates, the hum of the refrigerator, the wind against the glass—faded into a peaceful silence.

The next morning, Garrett was the first to wake. He watched the sunlight crawl across the floor, illuminating the white jersey discarded on the chair. He looked at the girl in his arms, her face serene in sleep, the Briar championship ring still hanging loosely from her thumb.

He thought about the season ahead, the scouts, the pressure, and the fame. It all seemed so much smaller now. Because no matter what happened on the ice, no matter how many goals he scored or how many hits he took, he knew exactly who he was coming home to.

He was Garrett Graham, and he was finally playing for the right reasons.

He leaned down and pressed a final, lingering kiss to Y/N’s temple before closing his eyes for another hour of sleep. He didn't need to check the standings. He’d already won the only trophy that mattered.
