The Puppet Master’s Smile
The Saturday night air at the hockey house was thick with the scent of expensive cologne, cheap vodka, and the frantic, electric energy of a mid-semester blowout. Garrett Graham was, as usual, the sun around which the entire party orbited. He stood near the center of the living room, a red cup in one hand, his other hand draped casually over the shoulders of a freshman defenseman he was currently "mentoring" on the finer points of defensive positioning—or perhaps just how to handle the Briar social scene.
Y/N watched him from the safety of a high-backed armchair in the corner. She was wearing one of his hoodies—a grey one that smelled like his detergent and the faint, spicy scent of his skin. To anyone else, she looked like the quiet, introverted girlfriend content to fade into the wallpaper while her superstar boyfriend ran the show.
But under the oversized hem of that hoodie, Y/N was wearing a pair of black lace-up boots and a sliver of a silk slip dress that Garrett hadn't seen yet. And in her mind, she was playing a very different game.
She had spent months being the one who followed his lead. She loved his dominance, loved the way he took charge of her world, but tonight, a small, mischievous spark had ignited in her chest. She wanted to see Garrett Graham—the man who was always in control, the man who prided himself on his composure—unravel just a little bit.
She stood up, smoothing the hoodie over her hips, and began to weave through the crowd. She didn't go to him. Not yet. Instead, she headed for the kitchen, catching his eye for a split second as she passed. She didn't smile; she simply held his gaze, let her eyes drop to his mouth, and then looked away, disappearing behind the doorframe.
Garrett’s voice faltered mid-sentence. He didn't turn his head fully, but Y/N saw his posture stiffen, his shoulders squaring as his internal radar recalibrated to her new position.
In the kitchen, she leaned against the counter, pretending to be interested in the selection of mixers. A few minutes later, the door swung open. It wasn't Garrett. It was Tuck, looking for more ice.
"Hey, Y/N. G’s looking for you," Tuck said, oblivious as he dug into the freezer.
"Is he?" she asked, her voice tilting upward in a soft, innocent lilt. "I’m right here. He knows where to find me."
She waited until Tuck left, then she moved. She didn't go back to the living room. Instead, she walked toward the back hallway that led to the mudroom—a place that was currently empty and dimly lit. She leaned against the wall, tucked one foot behind her, and waited.
She didn't have to wait long.
The heavy, rhythmic tread of Garrett’s footsteps echoed against the hardwood. When he rounded the corner, he looked annoyed. His brow was furrowed, and his dark eyes were scanning the shadows with a predatory focus. When they landed on her, he slowed his pace, his jaw tight.
"What are you doing back here?" he asked, his voice low and vibrating with a hint of a growl. "I look away for two minutes and you vanish."
Y/N shifted her weight, the movement causing the oversized hoodie to slide slightly off one shoulder. "I just needed some air, Garrett. It’s crowded out there."
He stepped into her personal space, his large frame blocking out the light from the hallway. He didn't touch her, but she could feel the heat radiating off him. "You didn't need air. You were looking at me."
"I look at you all the time," she whispered, looking up at him through her lashes. She reached out, her fingers trailing slowly, agonizingly light, over the fabric of his shirt, right over his stomach. "You’re very hard to miss."
Garrett’s breath hitched. He looked down at her hand, his eyes darkening. "You’re acting strange tonight."
"Am I?" She stepped closer, her chest almost brushing his. She leaned in, her lips hovering just below the shell of his ear. "Maybe I’m just tired of being the quiet one."
She felt him shiver—a tiny, involuntary reaction that made her heart hammer against her ribs. She moved her hand lower, her palm flat against his abdomen, feeling the hard ridges of muscle beneath the cotton. Then, she did something she had never dared to do in public. She let her hand slip beneath the waistband of his jeans, just an inch, her nails grazing the sensitive skin of his hip.
Garrett let out a choked sound, his hand flying up to catch her wrist. His grip was firm, his pulse racing against her skin. "Y/N. We are in a house full of people."
"I know," she breathed, her voice a silken thread. She didn't pull away. Instead, she leaned her head back, exposing her throat to him. "But they’re all in the living room. And you’re the captain, Garrett. You can do whatever you want, right?"
He groaned, a deep, frustrated sound that started in his chest. He pressed her back against the wall, his body heavy and solid against hers. "You’re teasing me. You’re doing this on purpose."
"Is it working?" she asked, her eyes wide and guileless.
"You know damn well it’s working," he muttered, his face dropping to the crook of her neck. He inhaled deeply, his nose brushing against her skin. "You smell like that perfume I like. The one that makes me want to lock you in my room and never let you out."
"Then why don't you?" she challenged softly.
Garrett pulled back, his eyes searching hers. He looked genuinely caught off guard by her boldness. Usually, she was the one waiting for his cue, the one who melted under his touch without a word of protest. This version of her—the one with the sharp edges and the daring eyes—was intoxicating.
"Because I have a team to host," he said, though his voice lacked conviction. He reached down, his hand sliding under the hem of the hoodie. His eyes widened as his fingers met the silky fabric of the slip dress instead of the leggings or jeans he expected. "What the hell are you wearing under here?"
Y/N gave him a small, secretive smile. "Something you’re not allowed to see until the party is over. Unless, of course, you want to leave early."
Garrett’s hand tightened on her hip, his thumb digging into the soft flesh. "You’re a brat. A cruel, beautiful little brat."
"And you love it," she countered.
She twisted out of his grip, the movement sudden and fluid. She skipped back a step, out of his reach, and smoothed the hoodie back down. "I think I’m going to go talk to Wellsy. He said something about wanting to show me a new trick on the Xbox."
Garrett’s face went from heated to thunderous in a fraction of a second. "You are not going anywhere near Wellsy. And you are definitely not looking at any 'tricks.'"
"He’s your friend, Garrett. Don't be so possessive," she teased, turning on her heel and walking back toward the noise of the party.
She could feel his eyes on her back, a physical weight that made her skin tingle. She knew exactly what he was doing: he was standing in that dark hallway, trying to regain his composure, trying to remind himself that he was the one in charge.
When she re-entered the living room, she didn't go to Wellsy. She went to the drink table and started a conversation with Hannah, Logan’s girlfriend. She kept her back to the hallway, but she could feel the moment Garrett stepped back into the room. The atmosphere seemed to shift, the air becoming pressurized.
She ignored him. She laughed at something Hannah said, her hand fluttering to her collarbone, a deliberate gesture to draw attention to the way the hoodie swamped her. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Garrett standing by the fireplace. He wasn't talking to anyone. He was leaning against the mantle, a fresh drink in his hand, his gaze fixed on her with an intensity that would have made a weaker woman bolt for the exit.
Ten minutes passed. Then twenty. Y/N moved around the room, playing the perfect socialite, but every move she made was calculated for his benefit. A tilt of the head. A slow sip of her drink. A lingering touch on the arm of a teammate as she thanked him for a compliment.
Finally, she felt a heavy hand land on the small of her back. The touch was possessive, the fingers splayed wide, claiming every inch of the space.
"Having fun?" Garrett’s voice was right at her ear, dangerously smooth and deceptively calm.
"I am," she said, turning to face him. "The party is great, Garrett. You’re a wonderful host."
"I’m done being a host," he said. He didn't look at Hannah or anyone else. He looked only at her. "We’re leaving."
"Already? But the keg is still half full," she pointed out, her eyes dancing with mischief.
Garrett didn't answer with words. He simply wrapped his hand around her upper arm—not hard enough to hurt, but with an unmistakable "don't test me" authority—and began to lead her toward the stairs.
"Wait, I thought we were leaving the house?" she asked as they climbed toward the second floor.
"We’re leaving the party," he corrected, his voice dropping into that low, commanding register that always made her knees weak. "The house can wait. My room can’t."
He practically hauled her down the hallway and into his bedroom, slamming the door behind them and turning the lock with a sharp, metallic snap. The silence of the room was a stark contrast to the thumping bass downstairs.
Garrett turned to her, his chest heaving as if he’d just finished a triple shift on the ice. He looked predatory, his eyes dark and focused. "You think you’re so clever, don't you?"
Y/N backed up until her heels hit the edge of the bed. She didn't look scared; she looked triumphant. "I don't know what you mean."
"The hallway. The dress. The way you were touching everyone else’s arm but mine," he growled, stepping into her space. He reached out, grabbing the drawstrings of the hoodie and pulling her forward until their noses touched. "You were trying to drive me crazy."
"Was it a long drive?" she whispered.
Garrett let out a sound that was half-laugh, half-snarl. He grabbed the hem of the hoodie and yanked it upward. Y/N raised her arms, letting him strip the garment off her. When the heavy fabric was gone, she stood there in the thin, black silk slip dress. It was short, barely reaching mid-thigh, with delicate lace at the neckline that dipped dangerously low.
Garrett froze. His hands stayed in the air, still holding the hoodie, as his eyes raked over her. The anger in his expression vanished, replaced by a raw, naked hunger that made Y/N’s breath catch in her throat.
"God, Y/N," he breathed. "You’re going to be the death of me."
"You said I was a brat," she reminded him, her voice trembling slightly now that she had his full, undivided attention.
"You are," he said, tossing the hoodie onto the floor. He stepped closer, his hands coming up to frame her face. His thumbs traced the line of her jaw, his touch surprisingly gentle despite the fire in his eyes. "But you’re my brat. And you need to learn that when you play games with the captain, you’d better be prepared for the penalty."
"And what’s the penalty?" she asked, her heart racing.
Garrett leaned down, his lips brushing against hers in a ghost of a kiss. "Total surrender. No more teasing. No more running away. Just you, me, and whatever I tell you to do for the rest of the night."
Y/N felt a shiver of pure, unadulterated pleasure. This was what she had wanted—to push him to the edge just so she could watch him take control again. She reached up, her hands sliding into his hair, pulling him down.
"I think I can handle that," she whispered.
Garrett didn't give her a chance to say anything else. He claimed her mouth in a kiss that was all fire and dominance, his hands sliding down her back to pull her flush against him. The silk of her dress was a thin barrier between them, and as he lifted her onto the bed, the "GRAHAM" on the discarded jersey on the chair seemed to watch over them—a silent reminder of who she belonged to.
Downstairs, the music continued to throb, and the party went on without its king. But up in the quiet of the bedroom, Garrett Graham was exactly where he wanted to be: proving to his girl that while she might be able to pull his strings for a night, he was the only one who knew how to make her sing.
Later, as they lay tangled in the sheets, the moonlight reflecting off the championship ring on Y/N’s thumb, Garrett pulled her closer, his chin resting on the top of her head.
"Don't ever do that again," he muttered, his voice thick with lingering heat.
"Do what?" she asked innocently.
"Talk to Wellsy like that. Or wear that dress in a room full of guys who aren't me."
Y/N smiled into his chest, her fingers tracing the line of his ribs. "I thought you liked a challenge, Garrett."
"I like winning," he corrected, kissing the top of her head. "And tonight, I definitely won."
"We both did," she whispered, closing her eyes and letting the steady beat of his heart lull her toward sleep.
Garrett held her tighter, a small, satisfied smile playing on his lips. He had spent his life being the best on the ice, the best in the classroom, the best in the room. But holding her, knowing she had tried to rattle him and failed because his love for her was stronger than his ego—that was the greatest victory of all.
As the house finally grew quiet and the last of the guests trickled out into the night, the captain and his girl remained in their own private world, where the only rules that mattered were the ones they wrote together, and the only name that carried any weight was the one they shared in the dark.
