Safe in my arms

Shadows of the Aftermath

The silence of the penthouse was usually a source of comfort for Kim Dan, a sanctuary from the noise of the world and the crushing weight of his debts. But as the morning light crept across the expensive marble floors, the quiet felt different. It was charged with the memory of the previous night—the way Jaekyung had held him, the way he had whispered those rare, soft words, and the way he had dismantled Dan’s trauma with a ferocity that was as frightening as it was protective.

Dan sat at the kitchen island, his fingers tracing the rim of a coffee mug. His body felt heavy, a dull ache lingering in his joints, but the sharp, jagged fear that had lived in his chest since Junmin’s kidnapping had finally begun to dull. He looked down at the watch on his wrist, the one Jaekyung had given him. It was a beautiful, cold piece of machinery that felt like a shackle of the most luxurious kind.

The sound of heavy footsteps echoing down the hallway made Dan stiffen instinctively, a habit he couldn’t quite break, even now. Jaekyung emerged, dressed in his training gear, his hair damp from a morning shower. He looked every bit the apex predator, his presence filling the room and demanding attention without saying a word.

"You're staring again," Jaekyung remarked, his voice a low vibration that seemed to settle in Dan’s bones. He walked over to the fridge, grabbing a protein shake.

"I was just... thinking," Dan said, lowering his eyes to his coffee. "About everything. Thank you again, Jaekyung-ssi. For the birthday, and for... taking care of things."

Jaekyung paused, the bottle halfway to his lips. He turned his head, his dark eyes scanning Dan’s face with an intensity that made Dan feel like he was being dissected. "I told you. I don't like people touching my things. Junmin thought he could use you to get to me. He was wrong."

"What will happen to him?" Dan asked, the question slipping out before he could stop it. He remembered the look in Jaekyung’s eyes when he had found them—the cold, murderous intent.

Jaekyung’s expression didn't change, but the air around him grew colder. "He’s being handled. He won’t be in a position to speak, let alone act, for a very long time. His family’s business is being liquidated, and his legal troubles are only just beginning. By the time I’m done, the name 'Junmin' won’t even be a footnote in this city."

Dan shivered. It was a total erasure. Jaekyung didn't just win; he obliterated. "I see."

"Don't waste your pity on him," Jaekyung snapped, stepping closer until he was looming over Dan. He reached out, his large hand gripping Dan’s chin and forcing him to look up. "He would have broken you, Dan. If I hadn't arrived when I did, you wouldn't be sitting here drinking coffee. You’d be a memory."

"I know," Dan whispered, his heart hammering against his ribs. "I’m not pitying him. I’m just... I’m not used to someone doing that much for me."

Jaekyung’s thumb brushed over Dan’s lower lip, a gesture that was surprisingly tender despite the hardness in his eyes. "Get used to it. You’re under my protection now. That means you don’t go anywhere without my men, and you don’t talk to anyone I haven't vetted. Do you understand?"

"That sounds like I’m a prisoner," Dan said, a small spark of his old spirit flickering.

"A prisoner who lives in a penthouse and has every debt paid?" Jaekyung countered, his lips curling into a smirk. "Most people would kill for that kind of cage. Now, finish your breakfast. We’re going to the gym. You’ve missed too many sessions, and your technique is going to suffer."

The gym was a return to normalcy, or at least the version of normalcy that existed between them. The smell of sweat, the rhythmic thud of gloves hitting pads, and the sharp commands from Coach Nam filled the air. But as Dan worked on Jaekyung’s muscles during their scheduled therapy session, he noticed the subtle changes.

Jaekyung was more distracted than usual. His eyes kept darting toward the entrance of the gym every time the door opened. His grip on Dan’s shoulder during a stretch was tighter, more possessive. Even the way the other fighters looked at Dan had changed; there was a newfound respect, or perhaps fear, in their eyes. They knew what Jaekyung had done to the man who laid a finger on his physical therapist.

"You’re tense," Dan noted, his hands working into the thick muscle of Jaekyung’s thigh.

"Shut up and work," Jaekyung grunted, though he didn't pull away.

"I’m serious. If you don't relax, you’re going to pull something during sparring," Dan insisted, leaning his weight into the massage.

Jaekyung suddenly grabbed Dan’s wrists, pulling him forward until Dan was draped across his lap. The gym was busy, but in this corner, it felt like they were the only two people in the world.

"I’m tense because I can still see those marks on your wrists," Jaekyung hissed, his voice barely audible over the noise of the gym. "Every time I look at you, I remember that bastard’s hands on you. It’s irritating."

Dan’s breath hitched. He looked down at his wrists, where the faint yellowing of the bruises was still visible. "They’re fading, Jaekyung-ssi. I’m okay."

"You’re okay because I said you’re okay," Jaekyung growled, his eyes dark with a possessive fire. "But don't think for a second that this is over. I’m going to make sure everyone knows exactly what happens when they try to take what belongs to Joo Jaekyung."

Later that evening, after the grueling training session, Jaekyung took Dan to a high-end lounge. It wasn't a date—Jaekyung didn't do dates—but it was a clear statement. They sat in a private booth, the city lights shimmering below them. Jaekyung ordered the most expensive whiskey on the menu, while Dan stuck to water, still feeling the lingering exhaustion of the day.

"Why are we here?" Dan asked, looking around the opulent room.

"Visibility," Jaekyung replied simply. "People need to see you. They need to see that you’re back, that you’re fine, and that you’re with me. Rumors fly fast in this circle, Dan. I’m grounding them."

As if on cue, a man in a sharp suit approached their table. He was one of the investors for the upcoming title fight, a man Dan had seen in magazines.

"Jaekyung! I heard there was some... unpleasantness recently," the man said, his eyes sliding over to Dan with a curious glint. "I assume everything has been resolved?"

Jaekyung didn't even stand up. He leaned back, one arm draped over the back of the sofa, his hand resting dangerously close to Dan’s neck. "It’s been handled, Mr. Choi. Permanently. I don't tolerate distractions."

Mr. Choi nodded quickly, sensing the danger radiating from the champion. "Of course. And this is the... therapist?"

"This is Kim Dan," Jaekyung said, his voice dropping into a warning tone. "He’s the reason I’m in top form. And he’s under my personal care. I trust there won’t be any more 'unpleasantness'?"

"None at all," Choi stammered, offering a quick bow before scurrying away.

Dan felt a flush creep up his neck. "You didn't have to do that."

"I do whatever I want," Jaekyung said, taking a slow sip of his drink. "And right now, I want you to stop looking so worried. You’re safe. Do you not believe me?"

"I believe you," Dan said softly. And he did. He knew that Jaekyung was a man of his word, especially when that word was backed by the kind of violence he had witnessed. But there was a new weight to his life now—the weight of being 'Joo Jaekyung’s.' It was a heavy mantle to wear.

When they finally returned to the penthouse, the atmosphere shifted again. The public persona Jaekyung wore—the arrogant, untouchable champion—began to peel away, leaving behind the raw, primal man Dan had come to know in the dark.

Jaekyung didn't go to his office or his gym. He followed Dan into the bedroom, closing the door with a finality that made Dan’s heart skip a beat.

"Jaekyung-ssi?"

Jaekyung didn't answer with words. He walked over to Dan, his hands finding Dan’s waist and pulling him flush against his body. He buried his face in the crook of Dan’s neck, inhaling deeply.

"You still smell like that hospital soap," Jaekyung muttered, his voice muffled against Dan’s skin. "I hate it."

"I'll shower again," Dan offered, his hands tentatively coming up to rest on Jaekyung’s chest.

"No," Jaekyung said, his grip tightening. "I'll wash it off you myself."

The intimacy that followed was different from the night before. There was less desperation and more intent. Jaekyung was slow, methodical, as if he were reclaiming every inch of Dan’s skin from the memory of Junmin’s touch. He traced every scar, every old bruise, and every new mark with his lips, his touch possessive but strangely careful.

"Look at me," Jaekyung commanded, his voice a low growl as he hovered over Dan.

Dan opened his eyes, his vision blurred with tears of overwhelming emotion. He saw the fire in Jaekyung’s eyes, the raw need that went beyond just physical desire. It was a need for control, yes, but it was also a need for connection—a connection Jaekyung seemed almost afraid to acknowledge.

"I'm here," Dan whispered, reaching up to cup Jaekyung’s face. "I'm not going anywhere."

"You better not," Jaekyung said, his voice cracking just the slightest bit. "Because if you ever disappear again, I’ll burn this whole city down to find you. And then I’ll kill you myself for leaving."

It was a twisted, violent kind of love, but as Dan felt Jaekyung’s heart beating against his own, he realized it was the only kind of love a man like Jaekyung could give. And for Dan, who had spent his whole life being discarded and ignored, it was more than enough.

As they lay together in the quiet aftermath, the moonlight spilling across the bed, Dan felt a sense of peace he hadn't known was possible. The nightmare of Junmin was over, replaced by the reality of Jaekyung. It was a reality filled with sharp edges and dark corners, but it was also a reality where he was wanted.

"Jaekyung-ssi?" Dan murmured, feeling sleep tugging at his eyelids.

"Mmm?"

"Thank you. For everything."

Jaekyung didn't respond, but he pulled the blanket higher around Dan’s shoulders and drew him closer into his side. In the silence of the room, the only sound was the steady, rhythmic breathing of two people who had found a strange, broken kind of solace in each other.

Outside, the city continued to churn, oblivious to the man who had been erased and the man who had been saved. But inside the penthouse, the world was small, private, and safe. For the first time, Dan didn't fear the morning. He knew that when he woke up, Jaekyung would still be there, a silent sentinel against the dark.

And as he finally drifted off to sleep, Dan realized that the 'hell' Jaekyung had promised Junmin was nothing compared to the heaven he was trying, in his own rough way, to build for Dan. It was a golden cage, perhaps, but it was the only place Dan ever wanted to be.
