Safe in my arms
The Gilded Leash
The sharp, rhythmic smack of leather against a heavy bag echoed through the private training wing of the penthouse. Jaekyung was a blur of controlled violence, his sweat-slicked muscles rippling under the recessed lighting. Every strike was precise, fueled by an restless energy that hadn’t dissipated since the night he had dragged Kim Dan out of that basement.
Dan stood a few feet away, holding a tablet and a stopwatch, his eyes tracking Jaekyung’s movements with professional scrutiny. Despite the lingering faintness of the bruises on his wrists, Dan was back to his duties. He had to be. Staying idle made his mind wander back to the feeling of cold zip-ties and Junmin’s breath on his neck.
"Your left hip is lagging," Dan called out, his voice steady despite the way his heart hammered whenever Jaekyung landed a particularly brutal roundhouse kick. "You’re overcompensating for the strain from Tuesday."
Jaekyung didn't stop. He delivered three more punches in rapid succession before catching the bag with his forearms, bringing it to a dead halt. He turned, his chest heaving, eyes dark and unreadable.
"Then fix it," Jaekyung commanded, wiping sweat from his forehead with the back of his glove.
Dan stepped forward, setting the tablet on a nearby bench. As he knelt to check the alignment of Jaekyung’s stance, the doorbell to the penthouse chimed. It was a rare sound; very few people had the audacity to show up unannounced.
"Stay here," Jaekyung said, his voice dropping an octave.
He didn't wait for Dan to respond before heading toward the main living area. Dan, curious and perhaps a bit too used to the safety Jaekyung provided, followed at a distance.
Standing at the door was a man Dan recognized instantly. It was Lee Hyun-woo, a rising star in the featherweight division and a former junior teammate of Jaekyung’s. He was younger, with a bright, easy smile and a reputation for being the "golden boy" of the MMA circuit—a stark contrast to Jaekyung’s "Emperor" persona.
"Jaekyung-hyung! I was in the neighborhood and thought I’d drop off those sponsorship papers the gym manager mentioned," Hyun-woo said, stepping inside with a confidence that seemed to irritate Jaekyung instantly.
Jaekyung didn't reach for the papers. He stood like a wall, blocking the path into the deeper parts of the apartment. "You could have left them at the front desk."
"And miss seeing the legendary penthouse?" Hyun-woo laughed, his eyes roaming the room until they landed on Dan, who was standing awkwardly by the hallway. "Oh! And you must be the famous Doc Dan. I’ve heard so much about you."
Before Jaekyung could intervene, Hyun-woo bypassed him, stepping toward Dan with an outstretched hand. "I’m Hyun-woo. I’ve been looking for a new therapist, and the word at the gym is that you’re a miracle worker. Jaekyung’s recovery times have been insane lately."
Dan blinked, surprised by the sudden warmth. He reached out to shake the man’s hand. "I... I just do my job, Lee Hyun-woo-ssi."
"Call me Hyun-woo," the fighter insisted, his grip firm and linger. He leaned in slightly, his smile widening. "Seriously, I’ve got this nagging shoulder issue. Maybe you could take a look at it? I’d pay double whatever the gym’s rate is."
The air in the room suddenly felt like it had been sucked out by a vacuum. Dan felt a hand, heavy and crushing, drop onto his shoulder.
"He’s busy," Jaekyung said. The words weren't just spoken; they were growled.
Hyun-woo didn't seem to notice the lethal shift in the atmosphere. "Come on, Hyung. Don't be greedy. A talent like this shouldn't be kept all to yourself. Dan-ssi, what do you say? My place is just ten minutes from here."
Dan felt the fingers on his shoulder dig in, the pressure bordering on painful. He looked up at Jaekyung and saw a look that made his blood run cold. It wasn't just anger; it was a territorial, primal rage.
"He isn't going to your place," Jaekyung said, his voice dangerously low. "He isn't going anywhere. He works for me. Exclusively."
Hyun-woo finally seemed to register the tension. He pulled his hand back from Dan, his smile faltering. "Hey, I didn't mean anything by it. It’s just business, right?"
"Get out," Jaekyung stated. He didn't raise his voice, which made it infinitely more terrifying.
"Hyung, I—"
"Out. Now."
Hyun-woo didn't argue further. He dropped the papers on the entry table and beat a hasty retreat, the heavy door clicking shut behind him.
The silence that followed was suffocating. Dan tried to step back, but Jaekyung’s grip on his shoulder tightened, spinning him around until he was backed against the wall. Jaekyung loomed over him, his shadow swallowing Dan whole.
"You seemed very interested in his shoulder," Jaekyung hissed, his face inches from Dan’s.
"I... I wasn't," Dan stammered, his breath hitching. "He was just being polite. He’s a fighter, Jaekyung-ssi, it’s natural for them to ask about therapy."
"Is it natural for you to let him hold your hand for that long?" Jaekyung’s eyes were wild, roaming over Dan’s face as if looking for a sign of betrayal. "Did you like the way he looked at you? Like you were something he could just buy?"
"No! Of course not," Dan cried out, his hands coming up to rest on Jaekyung’s sweating chest to keep some distance between them. "I don't even know him. I was just trying to be professional."
"Professional," Jaekyung spat the word like it was poison. He grabbed Dan’s chin, forcing him to look up. "Let me make this very clear to you, Dan. After what happened with Junmin, I told you that nobody touches you. I didn't say 'nobody except polite fighters.' I meant nobody."
"He was just talking, Jaekyung-ssi. You’re overreacting," Dan whispered, though he knew the moment the words left his mouth that it was the wrong thing to say.
Jaekyung’s laugh was short and harsh. "Overreacting? I spent three days scrubbing another man’s scent off your mind. I destroyed a man’s entire life because he thought he could lay a finger on you. And you stand here, in my house, wearing the clothes I bought you, and tell me I’m overreacting because I don't want some bratty featherweight putting his hands on you?"
Dan flinched, the reminder of Junmin sending a shiver of genuine fear through him. "I didn't mean it like that. I just... I’m yours. You know that. You remind me every single day."
"Clearly, I don't remind you enough," Jaekyung growled.
He suddenly hooked his arm under Dan’s knees and hoisted him up. Dan let out a small yelp, instinctively clinging to Jaekyung’s neck as he was carried toward the bedroom. The physical therapist knew this mood. It was the volatile mix of possessiveness and jealousy that Jaekyung usually channeled into his training, but now it was directed entirely at him.
Jaekyung dropped him onto the bed, the mattress bouncing under the weight. Before Dan could scramble back, Jaekyung was on top of him, pinning his wrists above his head with one hand. The bruises there were almost gone, but the way Jaekyung stared at them made Dan feel like they were glowing neon.
"Whose are these?" Jaekyung demanded, his voice a rasp.
"Yours," Dan breathed, his heart racing so fast it felt like it might burst.
"And this?" Jaekyung moved his free hand to Dan’s throat, not squeezing, but letting the weight of his palm serve as a reminder of his power.
"Yours," Dan repeated, his eyes fluttering shut.
"If I ever see you smiling at someone like that again," Jaekyung whispered against his ear, his teeth grazing the lobe, "I’ll make sure you can’t walk for a week. I’ll lock this door and keep you here until you forget what other people even look like. Do you believe me?"
"Yes," Dan gasped. "I believe you."
Jaekyung let go of his wrists, but only to tear off his own shirt, his eyes never leaving Dan’s. The raw, unbridled jealousy was transforming into something even more intense. He began to leave marks—not the purple, painful welts of a kidnapper, but the deep, red brands of a lover who wanted the world to know exactly who Dan belonged to.
He bit into the skin of Dan’s shoulder, hard enough to elicit a sharp cry, then immediately soothed it with his tongue. It was a cycle of claim and comfort that Dan was becoming hopelessly addicted to.
"You’re mine," Jaekyung muttered into the heat of Dan’s skin. "Every inch. Every breath. If you even think about another man, I’ll feel it. And I’ll punish you for it."
"I don't want anyone else," Dan said, his voice breaking as he arched into Jaekyung’s touch. "I only want you, Jaekyung-ssi. Please."
The "please" seemed to break the last of Jaekyung’s restraint. The encounter was frantic, fueled by a need to erase the image of Hyun-woo’s hand on Dan’s. Jaekyung moved with a desperate, crushing strength, his body a heavy weight that Dan welcomed. It was in these moments, when Jaekyung was this focused on him, that the world felt small and manageable. There were no debts, no kidnappers, and no fears—only the overwhelming presence of the man who had claimed him.
As Dan’s senses began to fray, he felt Jaekyung’s fingers lace through his own, pinning his hands to the pillows.
"Look at me," Jaekyung commanded.
Dan opened his eyes, seeing the champion’s face etched with a mixture of agony and triumph.
"Tell me," Jaekyung groaned, his movements reaching a crescendo. "Tell me who you belong to."
"You," Dan cried out, the word a sob of release. "I belong to Joo Jaekyung. Only you."
When it was over, the room was silent except for their labored breathing. Jaekyung didn't move for a long time, his forehead resting against Dan’s. The jealousy that had consumed him seemed to have simmered down into a low, protective hum.
He eventually rolled off, pulling Dan into his side with a possessiveness that had become second nature. He ran a hand over Dan’s chest, feeling the frantic thrum of his heart.
"Tomorrow," Jaekyung said, his voice returning to its usual arrogant calm, "you aren't going to the gym. You’re staying here."
"But your training—"
"I’ll train here," Jaekyung interrupted. "I don't like the way people look at you there. From now on, your sessions with the other fighters are canceled. You work on me, and only me."
Dan knew he should protest. He knew that being isolated like this was exactly what he had feared. But as he looked at the marks on his skin—marks that would tell everyone exactly who he belonged to—he felt a strange, twisted sense of relief. In Jaekyung’s world, jealousy was the highest form of flattery. It was the only way the man knew how to say that Dan was irreplaceable.
"Okay," Dan whispered, closing his eyes and leaning into the heat of Jaekyung’s body. "Whatever you want."
Jaekyung grunted in satisfaction, his arm tightening around Dan’s waist. "That’s right. Whatever I want."
The moonlight filtered through the window, illuminating the two of them. To the outside world, it might have looked like a scene of comfort. But to Dan, it was the reality of his life. He was a bird in a cage made of gold and muscle, protected from the storms outside by a predator who refused to let him go.
As he drifted off to sleep, Dan realized that he didn't mind the cage as much as he used to. Because as long as he was inside it, he was the only thing in the world that mattered to Joo Jaekyung. And for someone who had always been nothing, being everything to a monster was a dream he never wanted to wake up from.
The next morning, Dan woke to the sound of Jaekyung on the phone.
"I don't care about the contract," Jaekyung’s voice carried from the living room. "If Lee Hyun-woo sets foot in my gym while Dan is there, I’m pulling out of the championship. Tell the promoters that. I don't share."
Dan smiled faintly into his pillow. The Emperor was back on his throne, and his territory had never been more clearly defined. He sat up, feeling the ache in his muscles, a reminder of the night’s intensity.
When Jaekyung walked back into the room, he saw Dan awake. He tossed a new, even more expensive hoodie onto the bed.
"Put that on," Jaekyung ordered. "We’re having breakfast. And then, you’re going to show me exactly how 'professional' you can be with that hip of mine."
There was a glint in his eye—a challenge and a promise. Dan picked up the hoodie, the fabric soft against his marked skin. He knew his life would never be simple, and he would likely spend the rest of his days managing the explosive temper of the man before him. But as Jaekyung reached out to ruffle his hair, a gesture that was almost—almost—tender, Dan knew he wouldn't trade this "hell" for anyone else’s heaven.
