The Digital Traveler
The Blue Blur and the Big Brother
The mid-morning sun spilled through the windows of the 1-A classroom, casting a peaceful glow over the desks as the students enjoyed a rare twenty-minute reprieve between Heroics and Mathematics. Usually, the room was a chaotic blend of Bakugo’s shouting and Iida’s attempts to maintain order, but today, a small crowd had gathered around Soa Sakihara’s desk.
"So, it’s like a summoning scroll, but for nerds?" Denki Kaminari leaned in close, his eyes fixed on the sleek, metallic device strapped to Soa’s forearm.
Soa chuckled, adjusting their royal blue ponytail. They weren't used to this much attention, but the genuine curiosity of their classmates was far less intimidating than Aizawa’s piercing stare. "Not exactly. It’s a bridge. My Quirk, Digital Nexus, creates a contract between me and the entities I meet in the digital world. This device just helps me manage the data and the energy required to pull them into reality."
"Can we see the interface?" Midoriya asked, his pen poised over his notebook like a loaded spring. "Does it categorize them by power level or elemental affinity?"
Soa tapped a button on the side of the housing. A holographic display shimmered into existence, hovering just inches above the metal. It was a clean, minimalist UI, showing a series of circular icons arranged in a grid. Most of them were grayed out, looking like dormant stone carvings.
"It’s based on availability," Soa explained, pointing to the icons. "Each character has a symbolic icon that represents their essence. This one that looks like a flickering flame is a fire-mage OC I met in an RPG world. The one that looks like a gear is a robot companion."
"Why are they gray?" Ochaco Uraraka asked, tilting her head to get a better look.
"It means they’re busy or unwilling to be summoned," Soa said. "The digital worlds don't stop existing just because I’m here. They have lives, battles, and schedules. If I try to pull someone out while they’re in the middle of a boss fight or sleeping, the device won't let me. It respects their autonomy. If the icon stays gray, I can't force the connection."
Tsuyu Asui pointed to a specific icon—a stylized swirl of blue wind. "That one looks like it’s glowing a little."
Soa looked down, their indigo eyes widening. The blue wind icon wasn't just glowing; it was pulsing with a vibrant, electric sapphire light. Small digital particles danced around the edges of the circle, and a soft chime echoed from the device.
"Oh," Soa murmured, a soft smile tugging at the corners of their mouth. "Sonic wants to come through."
"The hedgehog from your story?" Kirishima asked, punching his palms together. "The little round guy who helped you when you were a kid? Heck yeah! I want to see the little dude!"
"He probably wants to check up on me," Soa said, their tone turning slightly fond yet exasperated. "I haven't visited his world in a few weeks because of the entrance exams and starting at UA. He’s... persistent when he thinks I’m slacking off."
Soa stood up, moving to the open space at the front of the classroom. The students scrambled to give them room, their faces a mix of excitement and awe. Soa took a deep breath, focusing their energy into the device.
"Digital Nexus: Materialize," they whispered.
The blue wind icon expanded, spinning rapidly until it formed a vertical ring of shimmering azure energy. The air in the classroom suddenly smelled of ozone and sea salt, and a faint, rhythmic thumping—like a drumbeat at two hundred beats per minute—vibrated through the floorboards.
With a sudden *vwoom*, a streak of blue light shot out of the ring, circling the entire classroom in a fraction of a second. Papers fluttered off desks, and Mineta was nearly knocked over by the sheer wind pressure. The streak finally skidded to a halt right in front of Soa, kicking up a tiny cloud of dust that shouldn't have been there.
When the dust cleared, the class fell silent.
The figure standing there was not the short, stout, round-bellied hedgehog Soa had described in their childhood stories. This Sonic was tall—well, taller—with long, slender limbs and quills that swept back like the chassis of a sports car. His fur was a deep, vibrant cobalt, and his eyes were a piercing, energetic emerald green. He wore sleek, aerodynamic red sneakers with a gold buckle and white gloves that looked brand new.
"Yo, Soa!" The hedgehog grinned, flashing a thumb-up. His voice was cool, confident, and definitely not the silent protagonist Soa had mentioned before. "Long time no see! You’re looking a little pale. You been eating your greens, or just staring at screens all day?"
"Wait a second!" Mina Ashido cried out, pointing a finger at the newcomer. "That’s not him! Soa-kun said he was a cute little round guy who didn't talk! This guy looks like he’s about to drop a platinum pop album!"
"Who are you calling round, pinky?" Sonic joked, crossing his arms and tapping his foot with a speed that made his leg a blur. "I’ve always been this stylish. I just had a bit of a growth spurt."
Soa sighed, rubbing their temples, though the moon-shaped markings under their eyes seemed to crinkle with hidden warmth. "Everyone, calm down. This is Sonic. The one I told you about was 'Classic' Sonic. This is him now. Or rather, this is his current form."
"I don't get it," Kaminari said, scratching his head. "Is it a transformation Quirk?"
"Think of it like a timeline," Soa explained, looking at Sonic with a mixture of affection and annoyance. "The digital worlds I visit aren't static. They evolve. The Sonic I met when I was twelve was from his past—the 'Classic' era. But as the games and stories progressed, he grew up. His world changed, his physics changed, and his appearance changed. He’s the same person, just... further along in his own story."
Sonic zipped over to Soa, slinging an arm heavily over their shoulder. Despite the hedgehog being shorter than Soa’s 172 centimeters, he carried himself with an older brother’s bravado. "Exactly! I’m the upgraded model. Faster, sharper, and way better at the witty one-liners. So, Soa, is this the place? The famous Hero Academy? Looks a bit... stiff. Where are the loop-de-loops?"
"It’s a school, Sonic, not an amusement park," Soa grumbled, trying to shove his arm off, though they didn't push very hard. "And get your glove off my shoulder, you’re getting 'speed-dust' on my uniform."
"Speed-dust is a badge of honor!" Sonic laughed, reaching up to mess with Soa’s ponytail, tugging the hair tie just enough to loosen it. "You’ve been away too long, kid. Tails was worried you’d forgotten how to have fun. I told him you were probably just busy being a 'serious hero,' but I had to come see the stick up your butt for myself."
"I don't have a stick up my—" Soa caught themselves, huffing. "I’m studying! This world has rules, Sonic. I can't just run around breaking things and collecting gold rings."
"Gold rings? No. But you could definitely use a chili dog," Sonic said, suddenly appearing on the other side of Soa, poking their cheek. "You’ve got that 'I’ve been overusing my Quirk' look. The shadows under your eyes are darker than Shadow’s mood on a Tuesday."
The class watched the interaction with mounting fascination. The shift in Soa’s personality was jarring but heartwarming. The introverted, quiet student who usually acted as the group’s silent observer was now bickering like a frustrated younger sibling.
"They really do seem like family," Uraraka whispered to Midoriya.
"It’s incredible," Midoriya replied, his pen flying across the page. "The psychological bond must be the anchor for the Quirk. Soa isn't just summoning a 'character'; they’re summoning a relationship. The Digital Nexus isn't just data transfer—it’s an emotional bridge!"
Sonic’s ears flicked. In a blink, he was standing in front of Midoriya, leaning in so close their noses almost touched. "Whoa, check out the green kid! You’re a fast talker, aren't you? I like the energy. You a fan of the blue blur?"
Midoriya froze, his face turning a shade of red that rivaled Kirishima’s hair. "I—I—I’ve read about the legends of the digital worlds in Soa’s notes! Your speed is theoretically impossible by this world’s physics!"
"Physics are more like... suggestions," Sonic said with a wink. He zoomed back to Soa’s side, leaning against the air as if it were a solid wall. "So, Soa-buddy, when are you coming back for a visit? Amy’s been threatening to bake a 'Welcome Home' cake, and you know how she gets. If you aren't there to eat it, I’m the one who has to deal with the hammer."
Soa looked down at their scarred hands, then back at Sonic. The anxiety that usually hummed in the back of their mind—the fear of forgetting who they were, of losing their original self to the sea of digital identities—seemed to quiet down in the presence of the hedgehog. Sonic didn't care about 'Soa Sakihara' the Hero-in-training. He cared about the kid who used to hide behind waterfalls in the Green Hill Zone.
"I’ll try to visit this weekend," Soa said softly. "I just... I have to make sure I don't leave the console on too long. Aizawa-sensei gets grumpy about the electricity bill in the dorms."
"Tell Mr. Sleeping Bag to send the bill to me," Sonic joked, giving Soa a playful punch on the arm. "I’ll run on a treadmill and power the whole block for a year in ten minutes."
"Please don't," Soa sighed, though they finally let out a small, genuine laugh. "You’d probably melt the treadmill and the floor."
"True, true." Sonic’s expression softened for a brief second, his emerald eyes losing some of their manic energy. He leaned in closer, his voice dropping so only Soa could hear. "You’re doing okay, right? Really okay? This world... it’s a lot heavier than the ones we’re used to."
Soa looked at the class—at Kirishima’s grin, at Momo’s curious gaze, even at Bakugo’s bored scowl. For the first time, the 'rules' of this world didn't feel like a cage. They felt like a foundation.
"I’m okay, Sonic," Soa whispered. "I’m making friends. Real ones."
Sonic beamed, a grin so bright it seemed to light up the room. "Good. Because if anyone gives you trouble, you just let me know. I’ll show 'em what 'Supersonic' really means."
"I can handle myself," Soa said, regaining their composure and gently pushing Sonic toward the fading blue ring. "Now go back before the thirty-minute limit hits. I don't want to pass out in the middle of English class because you wanted to stay and brag."
"Alright, alright! I’m going!" Sonic stepped toward the portal, but paused, looking back over his shoulder. He gave the class a two-fingered salute. "Catch you later, Hero Course! Take care of my favorite human, or you’ll have to answer to the fastest thing alive!"
With a final, mocking wink at Soa, he vanished into a blur of blue light. The ring collapsed into a single point of sapphire energy and then winked out of existence.
The silence that followed was heavy, broken only by the sound of the wind outside. Soa stood there, their royal blue hair slightly messier than before, a faint dusting of 'speed-dust' on their shoulder. They looked tired, but the tension in their frame was gone.
"Man," Sero said, breaking the quiet. "He’s... a lot."
"He’s a pain," Soa corrected, though there was no bite in their words. They sat back down at their desk, carefully adjusting the device on their wrist. The icon for the blue wind had turned gray again, but it felt warm against their skin.
"He really cares about you," Asui said, hopping over to Soa’s desk. "It’s nice to see you have someone looking out for you like that, ribbit."
Soa looked at their classmates, feeling a strange sense of belonging. They weren't just a traveler anymore. They weren't just a collection of digital memories.
"Yeah," Soa said, their voice steady and clear. "He’s been looking out for me since the beginning. Even if he’s a bit of an ego-maniac."
"I heard that!" A faint, ghostly voice echoed from the device, making Soa jump.
The class burst into laughter, and for the rest of the break, the questions didn't stop. But Soa didn't mind. For the first time since arriving at UA, they didn't feel like they were playing a role. They were Soa Sakihara, the student with the Digital Nexus, the one with a legendary blue hedgehog for a big brother, and the one who was finally finding a home in the real world.
As the bell rang for the next period, Soa took a deep breath, the fatigue in their muscles feeling like a badge of honor. They weren't just surviving the levels anymore. They were playing for keeps.
