The Digital Traveler

The Wings of the Digital Chimera

The mess hall of UA High was a symphony of clattering trays, rhythmic chewing, and the low-frequency hum of a hundred different conversations. For Soa Sakihara, the environment was a sensory overload that usually sent them retreating to the quietest corner of the library. Today, however, they were seated at a long rectangular table, flanked by the most energetic personalities in Class 1-A.

"I’m telling you, the logic is sound, Sakihara-kun!" Mina Ashido chirped, waving a chopstick punctuated with a piece of ginger pork. "Eating in a group is a tactical advantage. If you need more napkins or a refill on tea, you don't lose your prime real estate. We’re like a hero agency, but for lunch!"

Kirishima nodded vigorously, his mouth half-full of rice. "Plus, it’s manly to bond over a meal! A hero’s stomach is as important as their heart, right Bakugo?"

Bakugo, who was aggressively stabbing a piece of spicy tofu, let out a sharp "Tch" sound. "Shut up, Shitty Hair. I’m only sitting here because the line for the curry was shorter on this side of the room. Don't make it weird."

Soa offered a small, hesitant smile, their indigo eyes darting between the fiery blonde and the enthusiastic redhead. They felt a bit like a glitchy NPC caught in a high-intensity cutscene. "I appreciate the invitation. It’s... a bit louder than I’m used to, but it’s nice not to eat alone."

"See? Soa gets it!" Kaminari grinned, leaning back in his chair. "So, about that morning lecture with Present Mic. Did anyone actually understand the difference between the past participle and the—"

The air was suddenly sliced open by a shrill, piercing siren. It wasn't the rhythmic bell of a class change; it was a harsh, mechanical wail that vibrated in the very marrow of Soa’s bones. The entire mess hall went silent for a heartbeat, a collective breath held in lungs across the room.

"Level 3 Security Breach," a digitized voice boomed over the intercom. "All students, please evacuate in an orderly fashion."

"Level 3?" A third-year student at the neighboring table stood up, his face draining of color. "That means someone bypassed the UA barrier! Someone’s actually inside the school!"

The silence shattered. Panic, sharp and infectious, swept through the room like a wildfire. Chairs were kicked back, trays were abandoned to clatter onto the floor, and a mass of several hundred students surged toward the exit simultaneously.

"Movement! Now!" Bakugo barked, his eyes narrowing as he stood up. He didn't look scared; he looked ready to explode something.

The group moved as a unit, pushed by the sheer tide of older students who were scrambling for the hallway. As they crossed the threshold of the mess hall, the situation turned from urgent to chaotic. The hallway was a bottleneck, a crushing sea of bodies and limbs. The "orderly fashion" the intercom had requested was non-existent.

"Whoa, hey! Watch it!" Kaminari yelled as he was shoved against the wall by a panicked upperclassman.

"Everyone, stay calm!" Kirishima’s voice rose above the din, his skin hardening into his jagged, rocky form to prevent himself from being crushed. "It’s just an evacuation! Don't push!"

But his voice was drowned out by the screams and the thundering of footsteps. Soa felt the familiar spike of anxiety clawing at their chest. Their breathing became shallow, and the world began to flicker at the edges—a sign that their mental anchor was slipping. They saw Mina being pushed toward a sharp corner of a trophy case, and Sero struggling to keep his footing as the crowd surged.

*I can't let them get hurt,* Soa thought, their hand flying to the device on their wrist. *This isn't a game. I have to stabilize the environment.*

"Bakugo, Kirishima! Get behind me!" Soa shouted, their voice surprisingly firm despite the tremor in their hands.

"What are you doing, Sakihara?" Bakugo demanded, though he noticed the indigo glow beginning to emanate from Soa’s device.

Soa didn't answer. They tapped a sequence on the holographic interface, selecting a custom-built file. This wasn't a summon; it was a transformation. "Digital Nexus: Aspect Shift—Vesperae!"

A burst of pixelated light erupted from Soa, momentarily blinding those nearest to them. Their body underwent a rapid, jarring reconfiguration. Their royal blue hair lengthened and coarsened, merging into the thick, dark fur of a wolf’s head that formed over their own features. Their ears elongated into sensitive, bat-like points, twitching to catch the frequency of the chaos.

Most impressively, their arms elongated and shifted, thin membranes of leathery, bat-like webbing stretching from their fingertips to their torso, forming massive wings. Their feet curved into powerful, feathered talons reminiscent of a Great Horned Owl, anchoring them firmly to the linoleum floor.

Bakugo’s eyes widened. He recognized the predatory grace and the wolf-like snout from the Quirk Apprehension Test, but this form was more specialized, more deliberate. It was a chimera designed for protection and stability.

As the crowd surged forward again, Soa—now the Vesperae—flung their massive wings wide. The leathery membranes acted like a physical barrier, a living wall of digital matter that intercepted the rushing students.

"Stay behind the wings!" Soa’s voice was deeper now, vibrating with a bestial resonance.

They planted their owl-like talons into the floor, the sharp claws scoring the tile to provide a literal anchor. The wings buffeted the air, creating a pocket of still space amidst the hurricane of panicked teenagers. Soa felt the heavy thud of bodies hitting the membranes, the pressure straining their shoulder joints, but they didn't budge. They were a shield, a fixed point in a world that had gone out of sync.

"Holy crap, Soa! You’re like a literal fortress!" Kaminari yelled, huddling in the shadow of the left wing.

"Keep the line!" Kirishima added, placing his hardened hands against the back of Soa’s wings to help them brace against the pressure. "We’ve got your back!"

Mina looked up at the towering form of her friend. The wolf-head looked fierce, but the indigo eyes remained the same—attentive, protective, and slightly anxious. "You’re doing great, Soa-kun! Just hold it!"

High above the sea of heads, near the ceiling, Tenya Iida was struggling with his own sense of duty. He saw the bottleneck, saw the panic, and then he saw the blue-furred wings of his classmate holding the line for the rest of 1-A. It gave him the clarity he needed.

"Uraraka-kun!" Iida shouted, spotting the girl nearby. "Make me float!"

With a quick touch from Uraraka, Iida became weightless. He used the thrust of his engines to rocket himself toward the emergency exit sign, perching atop the metal frame like a gargoyle. He looked down at the chaos, his eyes landing on the source of the breach through the glass windows at the end of the hall.

"EVERYONE, CALM DOWN!" Iida’s voice boomed, amplified by the acoustics of the high ceiling. "LOOK OUT THE WINDOW!"

The sheer volume of his command caused the crowd to hesitate. Slowly, the pushing subsided. Soa felt the pressure on their wings ease, and they folded the membranes slightly so their classmates could see out the windows.

Outside, a swarm of reporters and camera crews were being held back by UA staff. There were no villains, no monsters, and no explosions. It was merely the press, desperate for a scoop on All Might’s teaching position, having breached the gate after it was deactivated by some unknown force.

"It is only the press!" Iida continued, his arm chopping the air with renewed vigor. "There is no danger! You are students of UA! Act with the dignity becoming of this institution!"

The panic dissipated as quickly as it had arrived, replaced by a collective sigh of relief and a fair amount of embarrassment. The sea of students began to move again, but this time, it was slow and orderly.

Soa exhaled a long, shaky breath through their wolf-like snout. They tapped the device on their wrist, and the pixelated light returned, dissolving the fur, the wings, and the talons. Within seconds, they were back to their human form, leaning heavily against the wall as the 30-minute limit’s fatigue began to settle into their muscles.

"You okay, Sakihara?" Kirishima asked, placing a steadying hand on Soa’s shoulder.

"Yeah," Soa whispered, wiping a bead of sweat from their forehead. Their royal blue hair was a mess, and their arms felt like lead. "Just... a bit of a migraine. Overused the structural integrity of the wings."

"That was a hell of a move," Bakugo said, walking past them toward the mess hall to retrieve his abandoned lunch. He stopped for a second, not looking back. "The wings were a smart call. Better than just biting people."

Coming from Bakugo, it was practically a standing ovation.

Mina hugged Soa’s arm, mindful of their fatigue. "You were like a big, scary guardian angel! We didn't even get bumped once."

"I just... I didn't want anyone to fall," Soa said, their voice returning to its usual quiet, introverted tone. They looked at the hallway, now filled with students talking and laughing about their own overreactions.

Iida descended from his perch, walking over to the group with a look of immense pride. "Sakihara-kun, your quick thinking provided a vital safety zone for our classmates. I shall mention your contribution in my report to Aizawa-sensei!"

"Please don't make a big deal out of it," Soa pleaded, though they felt a warmth in their chest that had nothing to do with their Quirk.

As they walked back toward the mess hall to finish their interrupted lunch, Soa looked at their wrist device. The icons were all gray, the battery low, and their body ached with the familiar strain of the Digital Nexus. But for the first time, the scars on their arms didn't feel like reminders of a lonely past spent in digital voids. They felt like the marks of someone who was finally learning how to stand their ground in the real world.

"Hey, Soa-kun," Kaminari said, bumping their shoulder playfully. "Since you’re a wolf-bat-owl thing now, does that mean you can eat my broccoli? I hear wolves love greens."

"Wolves are carnivores, Kaminari," Soa replied with a small, tired smirk. "But if you keep talking, I might just summon Sonic to deal with you. He’s much less patient than I am."

"Point taken! Keeping the broccoli!"

The group laughed, their voices joining the renewed hum of the cafeteria. The breach was over, the danger was gone, and Soa Sakihara was no longer just a listener in the group. They were a protector. And as they sat back down at the table, surrounded by the loud, chaotic, and wonderful students of Class 1-A, Soa realized that they didn't need to travel to another world to find a place where they belonged. They were already home.
